The most random 5K age group award categories

By , March 28, 2012 2:07 pm

The 5K I am running this Saturday has the most random age group award categories. Check it out:

I’ve seen Top 3 for 5-year and 10-year age groupings, but never top 5, 6 or 4! What even happens after bronze for 3rd? What do you get? Pewter? Tin? Aluminum?

Of course, this is very important to me. Placing in my age group and all.

Not.

Last year this race had 738 participants and I managed to grab 3rd place in my age group with 23:53.

I am doubtful that will happen this year. This race has gotten really popular and capped at 1000 entries. They even opened 50 extra entries for charity.

I just want to run fast.

But I don’t even want to talk about it. I don’t want to jinx it. So… let’s not talk about that. No need for the “good luck”s or “I know you can do it”s because who knows what the day will bring.

Do tell me though, what are the most random age group award categories you have seen?

As a side note, one cool thing about this race is that you can opt of out the technical race tee if you want and get $5 off your registration! So I think this race costs $13. Nice and cheap (it’s in Iowa – where this happened).

  1. I’m looking forward to hear all about the race afterwards! 🙂

Those are the most random age groups I’ve seen. I am annoyed with the 10 year age group as opposed to 5. Those women in their early 20s are speedy!

The weird thing is, the women in their lower 20s do not seem to come out to my neck of the woods! At one race I almost always win my AG and the 20-24 AG winner is in the 26:XXs. Strange!

At this race though, that is the speedy group!

  2. Awesome on third place. You are speedy!!
    Those are strange age groups!

The 5K I did in Michigan in February had two age groups: Under 26 and 26+. It would have been more proportional if they split it at 30 or even 35. The age groups for your race are really weird. Why the different number of awards by age group? Why not top 3 in each? WEIRD.

I remember you writing about that! Was that the race put on by your close friends? You must ask what the logic was behind it!

Those are odd. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any weird age groups, just the typical 5 or 10 year. Have a great race!

Hmmmm, I wonder if someone on the race committee wants a medal….

The S-No-W Fun Run in Lake Geneva does top 1 and 2 for every age/gender. Meaning, the fastest 26 year old gets a medal, the fastest 27 year old gets a medal, etc. So, I was the only 32 year old female running (hahahah) then I would get first place in my age!

Good luck on the race this weekend, you are going to do awesome!

I would love the opportunity to get $5 off a registration by opting out of the t-shirt. I have way too many t-shirts as it is. Wow, $13 for a registration!?!?!? That is unbelievable! If races were that affordable in Illinois I’d run a race every weekend!

Honestly? I never look at age group awards because I’m never even close. There are way too many speedy 40yo ladies out there for me to even have a chance, but I’m cool with that. Those do look really strange though.

(GOOD LUCK!! even though I’m not sposed to say that…)

We use those groups here in NY all the time for races but its usually always just top 3. Last Year i entered the 25-29 AG and thats where all the fast girls are. Very interesting! I hope you run fast this weekend!

  9. You won third place in your division last year?!! That’s amazing! I’ve never placed! You are such a rockstar, my friend!

Here in Belgium a lot of races have the option to opt out of the race tee and pay a lower entrance fee, which I really like. Because sometimes you just don’t need anymore race tees filling up your closet anymore!

Those are pretty random categories. I like that my age group gets the most awards! haha.
I’ve run a half marathon (twice) that has some pretty random awards that do not have anything to do with age. Middle of the pack runner for male/female and last person to finish under 2 hours male/female. My one coworker finished in 2:00:01 once and was 2 seconds away from winning $50!!

I am so impressed that you got 3rd place in your age group! I have never placed in my age group for any race, and I kind of doubt I ever will. 🙁 It’s on my list of things I hope to accomplish someday though, so maybe I should start keeping an eye out for more of these weird brackets! Either that, or keep running ’til I’m old enough to be the only one in my category!

Really, the key is to find smaller races if you are not speedy. That sounds awful but it is the truth. I have placed in my AG 4 years in a row (1, 2, 1 and 1) for a local 5K where I live becuase it is so small 😉

Is it terrible that i never even look at age group categories because i know i will never place in one? (i have to stop thinking like that though – Matt ended up winning his age group in a 5k once, because it was almost all women and kids, so his age group was three people!)
