Scattered Saturday

This post is all over the place… kind of how I think. Bear with me. I put it all in bullet points to try to show how I went from one thought to the next.

  • I had my first appointment with my new therapist on Thursday. We basically did the “getting to know me” session, but I feel like she really got me. I felt comfortable being completely frank with her* and she even picked up and called me out on a few of my moods lately. Seems like she knows her sh*t. So. Yay!
  • One of the things she asked what was I like to do for fun/to relax, and I had no answer. How sad is that?! I could go on and on about everything else but that is what drew a blank? We talked about how I run and workout, but that that is not enough. I mentioned that I like to read** and spend time with Steven and friends. And told her I have a hard time sitting still. And just being.
  • So, for years I have been trying to figure out how to relax. And I am still not there. I am anxious, most of the time. Not all, but most.
  • But! I was out and about last night, and came up with two things I like to do for fun: virtual shopping dates and explore.
  • So… virtual shopping date. My favorite coworker gave me some coupons for J. Crew Outlet. I told her I would stop at the outlet and she asked me to send her pics while I was there. I decided to send photos to all my favorite gals on iMessage – her, Erin, and Gina – while I was shopping. It was a ton of fun showing them the clothes and getting their feedback. If only the network were better there! And if only my sister were on iChat! Sad times, snis***.
  • The winning pieces (there were two times as many rejects):

  • I still need to consult with my stylist on how to pair the new dresses with pieces I have. And how to work that gray top, if at all – may return it). If you are local (Chicagoland) let Erin know if you want a closet consultation! Since she did mine, I have been getting a ton of compliments on my wardrobe at work!
  • On the drive home, I started to fantasize about if the four of us – fave coworker, Erin, Gina**** and me – lived close together, if we would all be friends. Then I decided we would be like the girls on Sex and the City and I decided in my head who was who, based on one or two superficial traits of each television show character. Ha ha ha. That entertained me for awhile on my drive.
  • Okay – explore. That other thing I mentioned in the fourth bullet. I also remembered that I love to explore places. Whether local or on travel, new or old (to me), I love experiencing space. I cannot explain it well. Maybe it’s the architecture student in me… Anyway, I need to remember that when people ask me what I like to do for fun! What do you say when people ask you what you like to do for fun?
  • I will be honest. The first thing I told my therapist is sleep. It’s been one of those weeks.

*I am pretty open with most people, but this was a good sign.
**We cannot meet for two weeks so she recommended a book for me to read and mark up in the meantime.
***Update your blog, sister.
****Gina remembered I had told her I wanted to try Moroccan Oil and she sent me some in the mail. Can it tame the beast that is my hair?! Let’s hope! Thanks Gina!

I like to get my toes done. The massage is my favorite part.

  2. Pam says:

I can’t remember the last time anyone asked me what I like to do for fun. They’re too busy asking me what I can do for them. HA! But honestly I wouldn’t know how to answer them if they did ask. Running and hangin’ with my critters is about it!

  3. Fun?! I don’t have time in my life for fun. It’s a good thing I enjoy teaching classes at the Y, since that is where I spend most of my free time – but even then, sometimes I get jealous that I am teaching a class and not always able to actually do the hellish things I am making everyone else do! 🙂 And then I just feel guilty about not working out.

For real – hiking. That is what I like to do for fun. But there are just not enough days in the week.

  4. Steven says:

Oh my. You just said that you like to go “…shopping…” for fun. Those ellipses don’t negate the fact that the middle word is shopping! Oh how the times are-a-changin’. Nice outfits BTW 😉 Good job virtual shopping crew!

    • kilax says:

Don’t worry Steven! I won’t turn in to a fun-time shopper!!! 🙂 I’m still me – and hate the public. Note: I was at the outlets at 7:30 and there was hardly anyone there 🙂

That is such a tough question! I run, isn’t that enough? hehe…I read. I sleep. I guess with 4 kids, my fun is too often their fun.

hmmm. need to work on that.

    (LOVE that orange dress!)

  6. Gosh, Kim, you are so adorable. Those outfits are fantastic; I especially like the first dress, and how it compliments your figure.

I don’t know what I enjoy doing for fun, either! Well, I love road trips and traveling/exploring locally. I love to read. I like kayaking… Not sure what else! Haha.

    • kilax says:

      Thank you!

I think you have a pretty good list going there! I want to go kayaking more this summer. Sigh. It seems every summer I make a “I want to do more this summer” list and it never happens!

One thing that I love about our dogs is that they MAKE me take a moment or two every day to be with them. While I’m not always “relaxed” with them, there are those sweet moments on their walk or when they’re being cute and nothing else really matters.
Sometimes, biking is just SHEER fun – especially if I’m headed downhill and know that there isn’t a gruesome uphill slog at the end of it!
And I love the “explore” topic – that is just so huge and all-encompassing. Great topic to think about!

    • kilax says:

So true about dogs! Even today, I have tried to spend some time with Data – walking him, playing with him… he does make me chill and laugh!

I am happy you understood what I was saying about exploring! 🙂

  8. chezjulie says:

Isn’t blogging, taking pics, and reading blogs something you do for fun/to relax? 🙂

I think I am the opposite… it is not hard for me to relax with a book or movie but I can be lazy about doing stuff.

Love all the clothes. The orange dress is terrific. Don’t return anything!

    • kilax says:

You know, it’s funny you mentioned that. I really enjoy writing and reading blogs, but commenting and responding to comments can become stressful when I “fall behind” (and I know no one cares, it’s just one of those silly things I think about).

I want to get better at relaxing with books. Even the new one I am reading, I find my mind wandering.

      Thank you 🙂

I really appreciate your posts like this – kind of stream of conscious and relating to therapy. I’ve never been to therapy, and I don’t have any demanding reason to right now, but I know that when my life changes again in 2 months (moving back east / living with someone again) there will probably be things that I should ‘deal with.’ I appreciate you sharing about it, as it makes me think more about this sort of thing, that I know I wouldn’t otherwise.

For fun: I watch a lot of tv (I know it sounds lame, but I really really do). I also hike, crochet, read, explore (mainly when I’m traveling with work), drink (ha! – typically with friends!), and of course sleep.

    • kilax says:

Thanks RunningLaur. I need to hear more about the move! Is it set in stone now? I bet you will be super happy when you get there! But the whole work thing will probably require some sorting out and getting used to?

Moroccan hair oil is SO AWESOME. I use it religiously!

Those are super cute pieces you picked up. I particularly love the dresses. CUTE!

I have trouble with relaxing too and telling people what I do for fun. I guess I would say- read, shop, watch movies, go see live music, dance, sit at the ocean, cook.

  11. Gingerfoxxx says:

let me know how you like the moroccan hair oil, because i was looking at it the other day. I LOVE THAT ORANGE DRESS!!

  12. J says:

Sometimes I think I don’t have something I like to do for fun besides running. My work can get very stressful and I like to read and run but other than that I have stopped doing a few things I used to love. One of those was scrapbooking but I just haven’t had time! There is never enough time in the day!

  13. Laura says:

I usually tell people I like to sit on the couch, watch TV and surf the web. But I’m realizing (now that I’m chained to the couch with a baby hanging off my boob) that I actually like being active. Ha!

  14. Etta says:

I love to read and sew but don’t have tons of time for the second one.

I think Erin would throw away all of my clothes. I have so many t-shirts it’s not even funny. I need to do some shopping for clothes that are more breastfeeding-friendly.

  15. Mica says:

Wow, I feel so behind on your life! I’m sorry that I haven’t been more diligent this week about my reader.

I’m so happy that you’ve found a therapist that you like!!

I think I might have a similar issue with not knowing how/when to relax. Harrison always teases me that I find things to stress out about, even if I am on vacation and have no actual worries. I hope you can find some relaxation techniques!!

    • kilax says:

Please don’t apologize! You do not have to keep up with me by Reader 🙂 🙂 🙂

I really want to try meditation. Have you thought about that at all? I think it would be really hard for me!

  16. Erin says:

This post isn’t all over the place! Nice job of tying it all together. And, yeah, did you ever think that you’d think shopping was fun? Mwahahaha, my evil plan has worked 🙂

One of the things I love about you is your willingness and excitement about exploring new places and trying new things.

    • kilax says:

You are so EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!! 😛 Just kidding. It was nice that there were not many people out shopping. And I knew to look for that orange dress at J. Crew! (Carolyn had tried it on earlier last week)

      Thanks 🙂

  17. Christina says:

Maybe once I don’t have to worry about finding an internship I will update my blog.. Lets hope its sooner than later! 😀

  18. I blanked at that question too while apartment searching when I first moved to Chicago. The leasing agent was trying to find me a neighorhood I would like but I could not figure out for the life of me what I did for fun. Such an awkward moment!

  19. Holly says:

I really, really love the dresses! I’m totally getting into style cuz of you and Erin!

My friends and I have totally figured out who would be who on SATC. I’m always Charlotte. :p

  20. I’m not really sure what I do for fun either. I haven’t even had time to GO to my therapist for a while so I guess you are ahead of me on that. Sleep is high on my list too. Life is stressful sometimes!

  21. Christina says:

Love the orange dress, it looks great on you. I have to think of what I like to do to relax that is not an easy question.

  22. Thank goodness no one asks me what I do for fun. Because, these days, I do whatever it takes to make sure Gavin is happy. And, if he’s having fun, mama is having fun. Though, I’m pretty sure a therapist would frown upon that answer. =)

    I Love that orange dress!
