Friday Question #184

By , February 24, 2012 8:18 am

Do you ever get so tired that you plan a “sleep in” day to try to catch up? Does it ever work for you?

I know you can’t “bank” your sleep to make up for lost sleep, but I have been planning on sleeping in tomorrow all week.Β I don’t have a long run, I don’t have any social plans, I don’t think we have any reason to leave the house other than to get groceries… it should be perfect, right?

Oh wait. There’s this guy:

Data insists on waking me up at my normal wake up time (4:30am) most days of the week, whether or not I need to get up. He wants to be fed. If I feed him, and go back to bed, he still bothers me. If I lock him out of the bedroom he bangs on the door handle.

So, my one goal for the day is to KEEP DATA UP all day long. Muah ha ha. I will wear him out and then he will sleep in. Let the games begin.

If that does not work, there will be a nap in my future.

(Yes, this is another reason I should never have kids, if I find my cat waking me up to be an annoyance)

This post sucks but it’s all I got right now. See here.

i don’t plan sleep in days, but sometimes my body just forces them on me πŸ™‚

  2. gina says:

Can’t Data dish out his own food, geez. : ) I can not wait to hear how your plan to keep Dates up all day works out for you.

    • kilax says:

So far we have made a new toy for him to keep him intrested and made up a song to keep him up. But it’s only 9:00.

  3. Losing Lindy says:

I love to sleep in too, but my cat wakes me up, because he thinks I should be up. He has access to dry food all the time, so he just wants my warm bed.

  4. bobbi says:

I wish I were sleeping in too! But no. 12 miles for me. I hope Data cooperates πŸ™‚

  5. Oh, I am totally planning on doing this tomorrow!!! Did you commute suck this morning because mine did! Happy Friday!

    • kilax says:

I am working from home today! Were the trains delayed? Or just getting to the station?

      • You are lucky! I thought about working from home but went in late. My train was only about 10 minutes late, but I took a late train because my car was stuck this morning!

I take the train that gets in at 8:32. What train do you take home?

        • kilax says:

Ugh! What a pain. Maybe this is winter’s last “hurrah”? I hope?!

I take the 4:40 (leaves Union) train home.

  6. My dog does the same thing! She licks my hand and wakes me up whenever I try to sleep in. Those jerk animals need food and attention! Who do they think we are? Responsible caregivers? Pssshhh

  7. RunningLaur says:

yup, I do this. I think it’s more so just to be able to look forward to it all week long than the actual sleeping in. I think “If I can just get through these 3 days of traveling for a billion hours, I’ll get to be home in my own bed on Friday and I’m not getting up until I get up.”
[note: this was the plan for today, but I was awake at 6am for no reason πŸ™ ]

  8. Jen says:

I thought I’d be able to sleep in today because of the snow but we didn’t get enough! Instead, I’m at school feeling like a zombie! Sleeping in will happen tomorrow for sure!

  9. abbi says:

It seems like any time I try to plan a sleep in day I just cannot sleep in! I just try to roll with it and get them where I can…hope you can enjoy a lazy day tomorrow!

  10. Kandi says:

Delilah wakes me up sometimes but she’s such a sleepy dog that if I put her in bed with me, we can sleep in peace in the mornings. We don’t let her in bed at night though because the bed isn’t big enough and she is like a paperweight for blankets!! She’s also really solid and difficult to move once she’s down. haha.
Good luck keeping Data awake today!

  11. Emily says:

Oooh, the plot thickens! Can’t wait to hear how this goes with Data! Little does he know what he has in store for him today. πŸ˜‰

I actually have a very tough time sleeping in. I’m so used to waking up at the usual time that even on weekends I still wake up around the same time. Many times I get less sleep on weekends because I’ll be up later, but will still get up at the same time regardless. Therefore, naps are a really, really good thing!

    • kilax says:

We did a pretty good job of keeping him up until he took a nap from 11-1. But he let me sleep in until 7:20 today!

I have the same issue with sleeping in – too used to getting up. If I stay up VERY late and am at someone else’s home (away from Data) I can usually sleep in though!

  12. Erin says:

The first thing I think when my alarm goes off is “When is the next day I can sleep in?” I didn’t have nearly enough sleep-in days in 2011. I think it’s why I’m not really missing my Saturday morning long runs as much πŸ™‚

Let us know how it goes with Data!

  13. Marcia says:

I’ve never planned a sleep in day cuz I know I’d never do it. My dogs are just like Data. They get me up even for no apparent reason. Enjoy some R&R (and snow fun!) this weekend!

  14. sizzle says:

I’m terrible at sleeping in. Our cats don’t help either. I do, however, plan a day I don’t have to do anything once in a while to catch up on relaxation. Sunday might be that day for me except I should do my taxes. How’s that for not relaxing?

    • kilax says:

Ugh… *shudders*… I was supposed to put together tax docs today. Instead, I cleaned my house, ran errands and talked on the phone to family for hours. So much for relaxing!!!

  15. martymankins says:

OMG, our 18 yr old does that same thing. It’s like a alarm going off and then they are awake.

It’s been my experience over the years that cats can never be worn out, unless of course, they get older and then just sleep an extra 2 hrs a day.

I do like a nice sleep in day, but my own body’s clock is set to get up – thanks to kitty – but also the many years I’ve been a morning person.

  16. Maggie says:

This is why I leave my cat’s food out all night on the weekends. Luckily she leaves me alone when I do. Otherwise, she’s meowing at my usual wake-up time. I know I’m not supposed to, because she’s fat and blah blah, but I need my sleep. (Stuff like this makes me think perhaps I shouldn’t be a parent either …)

  17. Roosevelt is super high maintenance and loves his routine as well. When I try to sleep in he sits on my chest and whines and licks my face. The only time he sleeps in is when we’ve been at my parents’ house for the weekend and he’s been playing nonstop and is completley worn out. Those are nice mornings. πŸ™‚

  18. Pam says:

I totally understand! I have three animal bellies and bladders that don’t understand the concept of weekends!

  19. I sleep in every weekend because Im always so exhausted by the end of the week I can barely function.
Lexie is the same though, she refuses to let me sleep in past 8:00, even if we’ve been up all night studying (she likes to help). I try and ignore her, but she sticks her face an inch away from mine and stares straight into my eyes. As soon as I open them up Im screwed.
BTW – I keep forgetting to email you, but I got the skull cap. I’m so excited to run in the dark now. Thanks again! πŸ™‚

    • kilax says:

Lexie is just too excited to play with you! I am screwed if Data sees me move or open my eyes too. They are so smart.

Happy the cap came! You are welcome! πŸ™‚

  20. diane says:

My plans to sleep in never work out, so I try to build in nap time instead. Often I just wake up on my own at 7 no matter when I go to bed(annoying). Last Sunday was supposed to be a sleep-in day but P was snoring really badly all night. WAH!
Luckily it’s never my kitties (unless I am sleeping restlessly and they are prancing around the bed–that bothers me). They are very polite and never whine for food until I am up and around. πŸ™‚ Don’t know how I got so lucky!

  21. Kate says:

I seriously wish I could bank sleep! I like to sleep in on the weekends but then it is always so hard to fall asleep on Sunday nights that Mondays end up being more painful than they already are!

  22. Stephany says:

I have been looking forward to staying in bed until noon on Sunday since Wednesday night. πŸ˜‰ I so feel you on this!

  23. Etta says:

I don’t need to sleep in but I’d love to sleep all night. I’d settle for only waking up once.

  24. If I sleep passed 8 AM, I know I am either getting sick or already am sick. But in weeks like recently when I’m going from one place to another, I’ll find myself “crashing” one night. That will probably be tonight/tomorrow morning. I haven’t had a free day in 10 days, so I am looking forward to catching up tomorrow. Honestly, I can’t believe I am still awake – it is 9:30 in Seattle…
