Slow Cooker FTW

Do you make many slow cooker recipes?

Truth – I did not even know what a slow cooker was, but apparently, I sent Steven a recipe a long time ago that required one. I didn’t believe we had one until he pulled it out of “junk” (sigh) cabinet.

Oh! It’s a Crock Pot! I am familiar with that word. But I am pretty sure we haven’t used this one since I’ve lived in this house (5 years this May). It was time to remedy that on Sunday! We made this Moroccan Slow Cooker Stew, and I was super impressed with how easy it was to just throw everything in the slow cooker, and let it sit for six hours.

And I loved the way it made the house smell!

Ha ha. I didn’t realize the Crock Pot would get so messy, as it sat all afternoon. I guess that makes sense.

The mess and wait were worth it. This stew is awesome. We made some rice to go with it, and it was the perfect combination. The recipe called for cumin, cinnamon and crushed red pepper as the spices, and it just went so well together. We will definitely be making it again!

This slow cooker is pretty nifty… do you guys have any slow cooker recipes to share with me?

It makes me laugh that this thing cooks all day… and I eat it in 5 minutes. Yeah. I still struggle with not eating too fast.

They make bags to line your crockpot, so that cleanup is a breeze.

I really don’t use mine, because it is HUGE and it tends to burn things. My mom has a really old one and a new one like mine and she ALWAYS uses the old one.

  2. I don’t have one, but love seeing chili & soup recipes that use a crock pot. We just don’t have the space in our kitchen for one at this point, but I do collect recipes on pinterest.

I love my crock pot but I think most of the things I cook in it are meat related (pot roast, pulled pork/chicken, etc). Check out this blog for ideas though http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/ She used her crock pot everyday during 2010 and blogged about it. It looks like she still updates.

I love my slow cooker. Reynold’s makes liners that make clean up a LOT easier (which in turn makes me use it even more…)

I love that idea, I have one but have only used it to heat HOT rocks for massages…I guess I should clean it out and try to make something healthy eh? :)) Thanks for the ideas!

I LOVE my slow-cooker! I used it at least once a week. In fact, I’ve got a pork belly/cabbage situation going on right this second. Obviously, I’m nowhere near even close to vegan, so most of what I use it for includes meat. I’ll keep you in mind if I find any good recipes without animal products, though!

  7. The roommate and I hit up pinterest for our slowcooker sundays. I’ve found a lot of good ideas there! Also, I’ll really do any soup/stew recipe in it- whether it calls for it or not…

(and we called it a crock pot when I was growing up, too)

I use mine all the time. Cleanup can be a pain but I let it soak sometimes for a bit. I also have a tiny one I use for overnights to make steel cut oatmeal.

I think almost anything can be made in a crock pot. I made dressing in one for Thanksgiving and it was great. I’ve heard of people making cakes in them but never tried that.

I love my crock pot (it took me a bit to figure out slow cooker was the hip name for a crock pot!). A lot of my recipes involve meat though. If I find any vegan ones, I’ll email you!

My main issue with the crock pot is that I want to use it during the week…but very few things can cook for 13 hours! Using it to make a soup or a stew on the weekends is a good idea, though.

  12. Maggie says:

We used the term “crock pot” growing up as well. So far the best thing I ever made it in was ribs.

  13. Courtney says:

I love a crock pot!! The downside, having to smell what’s cooking all day long and having to wait to eat it, pure torture!! I have made everything under the sun in the crock pot and the only thing I don’t recommend is peach cobbler, no good!!!
    =^..^=

Anything you can make in the oven or on the stove can be made in the slow cooker. Most are not vegan, but I’ve made cake, stews, oatmeal, French toast and wings. The French toast casserole (you’ll have to check my blog) was awesome, and I’m sure you can substitute almond milk and flaxseed eggs. Also, you can buy crock pot liners so that clean up is really easy.

I rarely use our slow cooker too. I would like to use it more. It seems like such an efficient way to do dinner. But I never want to eat the things a slow cooker makes. The spices in yours look yummy

  16. We registered for a slow cooker for our wedding, because I was convinced we’d use it all the time. The reality? I hate it. I think it’s because I didn’t grow up in a house with a slow cooker … and the recipes for that kind of cooking generally aren’t what I like to eat. That said, I think it’d work out great for warming chili, soup or sauce for big parties.

  17. Etta says:

I love my crock pot, but I hate cleaning it. Fortunately you can buy liners for them. We mostly use ours to cook pot roast or chili.

  18. Kelsey says:

i loveee my crockpot! I love to make soup, esp smashed potato soup! yum!

  19. I cannot quit telling people about the chicken enchilada soup I made last week. It’s not my recipe, it’s tasty kitchen’s.

  20. Pam says:

My crock pot is an absolute life-saver. I use mine a couple of times a week. Since my husband and I very rarely eat the same meals, it’s great to be able to throw either mine or his in the crock pot early so I’m not trying to prepare two meals at the same time!

  21. Felicia says:

I just dug out a bunch of crock pot recipes to start using. Since I am cooking mostly at home these days—it would be nice to go home to a cooked meal LOL

  22. Kelly says:

I have a slow cooker and have every intention on using it so many times but have never actually done it. Since I’m sooo lazy when it comes to cooking, I know I really should be utilizing this more!

  23. *lynne* says:

Hi! It’s been a while since I’ve been able to drop by. This recipe looks great, I’ve already bookmarked it 🙂 My adventured with the crock pot have produced edible but not outstanding dishes. I’m intrigued by some eggy breakfast dishes, but they seem to be a huge bother compared to what I can whip up in a pan in 10 minutes or less.

  24. Bethany says:

I make a lot of crock pot meals for the family I work for…chicken tacos (chicken breast, salsa, taco seasoning), pesto chicken (chicken, pesto, cheese), roast beef…so most of them probably wouldn’t be ones that you’d like but I’m storing the ideas away for later in my life! 😀
