The last Christmas Gift…

By , January 2, 2012 5:05 am

… from Steven anyway! We still have to see my family this weekend. I can’t wait! I love stretching out the holidays. Sorry for making you keep your tree up for so long though, Grandma.

I’ve been telling Steven for the last few months that I would really like something different to hang my necklaces on. I have a beautiful jewelry case that he bought me several years ago:

It actually worked quite wonderfully at first… until I filled it up. Now I have necklace overload! I hang as many necklaces as possible, but some just sit in the top level and bottom drawer. And the ones that hang get all tangled!

So I asked Steven for something new for my necklaces, and was obnoxious and sent him lots of different ideas (like this one!, which he almost bought, but then decided he could make something better and more personal). And after being gone all day yesterday, he came home with a surprise…

What could it be?

Yay! A new necklace rack with animal hardware! So so cool. And even cooler is that Steven made it.

Steven ordered the hardware well before Christmas but it arrived a few days after. He went to my second cousin’s (Drew) house yesterday to put it all together. They decided to use a piece of exotic wood since the hardware is safari type animals. They had to cut the wood down, and take care of sanding it and filling in a crack:

And they had to create little unique pegs for all the animals to sit on, on the rack (see one next to the Rhino):

Cut holes in the back:

And add the hardware!

I think I just made the whole process seem a lot easier than it was, but that is what happens when you have this recipient tell the story.

Let’s get to the good part – installation and set up (of the necklaces!). We decided to put the rack above my existing jewelry case. Even though we were worried Data may bother it…

But I just love the way it looks!

It’s going to be so nice to have those necklaces hanging up, and not so tangled up. And now my jewelry box is a lot better:

Data, on the other hand…

He got up there once and did not seem too interested. We’ll see what happens. There has been a lot of commotion in the bedroom lately (not that) because of this install and the TV mount install, and Data has been really curious about it all!

Where do you store your jewelry?

That’s beautiful! I can totally see Steven making that for you! Data…. 🙂

  2. J says:

What a nice thoughtful gift! I only have a few necklaces that I never wear but I hate when they get tangled! Hopefully Data does not decide to play with them!

  3. Marcia says:

Love it! Very stylish solution. And look at that cheeky Data!

  4. Losing Lindy says:

Wow he is really talented! I have read that cats want to put their scent on things, and do this by rubbing their cheeks on it. I hope Data leaves it alone.

  5. Shelley says:

Wow, how beautiful..you are very crafty and very cool blog!!!

  6. Erin says:

That is a beautiful and thoughtful gift! Steven is very talented. Let’s just hope Data continues to think it’s not very interesting 🙂

I have a jewelry stand that I keep my earrings and bracelets on. It has necklace hooks, but I don’t have very many.

I love your necklace holder/rack!!! That is awesome!!! And even more awesome because Steven made it!! So very cool!!!
Poor Data!! Just another temptation for him… maybe he won’t bother it too much!!

    =^..^=

I love it! At my apartment I put random nails in my bathroom wall under the medicine cabinet to hold my necklaces. I then got a turtle themed hook set that I love. I haven’t set it up in my house yet though. I need to find a space outside of the bathroom because the moisture wasn’t good for it. Right now it is a mess

what a great idea for keeping all your “bling” organised! It’ll work great for all your race medals too!

  13. How cute! I should do something similar so I’m more likely to wear necklaces!

Love that you received a unique gift…and that you have a man that listens! 😛

  15. I love that, what a great gift and so special that he made it. Since our house is so tiny, I have my necklaces all in plastic containers with dividers from the container store. Having it hanging and displayed is so neat and shows off your collection.

  16. What a nice gift! Homemade gifts are the best!

I don’t have a lot of jewelry. I usually store it in a very small case.

Thanks for visiting my blog! I hear you about the lard hiding in things. I once went to a mexican restaurant and asked how the refried beans were prepared for this very reason. When the waitress came back she said that there was not lard in the beans but a very small amount of beef broth was used in making the beans. The kicker? On the menu it was labeled “vegetarian” I made sure to contact the owner and explain that his beans were not vegetarian and he shouldn’t label the meal that way.

We love Mexican food and are always asking about the beans. The Spanish word for lard is manteca, if you need to ask in Spanish – sometimes we have to! And I do wonder what they are putting in the rice… I am afraid to ask!

It’s good you talked to them about what vegetarian means. It’s so funny – we were in Chinatown in NYC and there were all these restaurants labeled vegetarian, but they just meant they included veggies in the food, along with fish, pork, beef, etc.

How funny – I got something very similar from my husband for christmas, it is a standing rack with flower-like thingys that you can hang your necklaces up on. I was having the exact same problem, and this was my special request. When I told him, he had no clue what I was talking about though. But he ended up finding one (with the help of my shop crazy 16 year old).

Yours is very cool looking and that is so neat that Steven made it for you!

I had a feeling he was going to make something so I asked if he wanted to take the camera 🙂

  21. Alice says:

awww that is so super sweet!! i love it!

  22. ChezJulie says:

I love the necklace rack. Especially the wild animal hardware!

I had been thinking about asking for a necklace stand for Christmas myself, to replace the “clump on the dresser next to the jewelry box.”

  23. Pauline says:

Belated happy holidays! That necklace holder is REALLY cool!

  24. That would be the perfect necklace holder for me too! Anything with animals and my heart swoons! So cool he put that together for you!
