Whole Food Shame

Don’t forget to enter the Season of Giving Giveaway #1!

I should not be allowed to shop at Whole Foods without my husband.

Or Target. Or Trader Joe’s. These are stores where I always find a few extra things to throw in the cart, and nothing seems to hold me back… I think I would do better with Steven there!

At least some of the Whole Foods items* were holiday gifts?! Right?! RIGHT?!!!

Which stores do you have a hard time sticking to your shopping list when you visit?

I went to Whole Foods to get fenugreek, vegan ice cream, and a special treat to put in someone’s holiday gift, and ended up with that bag, full to the top. I just love looking at all the different things at Whole Foods. Steven and I kind of get that way when we visit HyVee (another food store) in Iowa, because they have this healthy section that is full of unique items. I always see something I want to try! Like nasty vegan cheese!

*Unfortunately, one was this really nasty vegan cheese that we both took one bite of then spit out!

I rarely seem to make it out of Trader Joe’s with less than $50 spent even though I don’t always have any particular item in mind. I like their stuff a lot but I don’t take the time to drive there very often (even though it’s only about 10-15 minutes away) so I often try to stock up on items that I love. They have great prices but it still adds up quick.
We stopped at whole foods the day before the marathon and I somehow only bought $7 worth of stuff. I think that was a first for me. Though I don’t go too often because I know I’ll spend too much there… very easy to do.

I wish we had a TJ’s closer! They actually have a few things there that you can get at Whole Foods, but are a lot cheaper at TJ’s. I suppose I would overdo it every time too, even if it was closer.

  2. I have finally disciplined myself at Trader Joe’s. Now if only I could do the same at Target…

  3. Marcia says:

Oh yes Whole Foods does that to me as well. So does Target. I was there for the second time in 24 hours yesterday and still came away with $50+ worth of stuff.
    Sure is fun though!

  4. Sarah says:

Target and Whole Foods are my two weaknesses. At Whole Foods, it’s much easier for me to stick to my list. Target???? Oh man…it is my DOWNFALL. I spent $50 on two pairs of shoes there there other day (on sale), among other things, which was NOT on my list! Haha. 🙂 It is so much fun though!

    Happy Thanksgiving, Kim!

I should never be left alone at Target; Hallmark; and Papyrus.

  6. Kristina says:

Whole Foods is terrible that way. REI is another store in which I can almost never enter without purchasing something (usually NOT needed but greatly appreciated!).

  7. We’re terrible at Target. That place is a money suck for us. I could go in with a list of 3 things and plan to spend no more than $25. Next thing you know, I need a basket and wind up spending $150. It never ceases to amaze me.

Whole Foods and Target…it’s like walking in I know I have spent $50-$100 even if I am only going for a $2 item. We don’t have TJ’s here but I’m sure it would be the same way. But if Matt is there, he moves me along much quicker and nixes some of my impulse buys so that does help 🙂

My grandmother was the same way with Whole Foods and unique grocery stores…she just loved to walk down the aisles looking at all of the unique things. And then she would come home with the most random haul. We used to tease her about it but now I totally get it!!

    • kilax says:

Ha! Steven and I do the same thing at this international grocery store we like. Walk up and down most aisles. I think his grandma did it too 🙂 Is it hereditary? 😉

  9. Erin says:

I really had to hold myself back at Whole Foods! But Target, oh Target. If I go in by myself I always thing “Oh, I’ll just swing by the clearance rack…” I definitely need Jason with me to keep me on track!

What do you do with Fenugreek? I’m just curious because it is in my favorite shampoo. 🙂

    • kilax says:

We use fenugreek as part of a Lebanese spice mix to make lentils & rice. The mix has a few other things in it. Right now all I can remember is cloves, because we are out. I actually plan to post the recipe some time. It’s good!

And the WF people were confused when I asked for fenugreek. They kept trying to give me supplements or bathroom products. LOL! I didn’t know it was used that way 🙂

  11. Christina says:

I am the same way at Traders joe’s and Marshalls!

  12. Amy says:

Ha ha! I know what you’re talking about – for me it is our local Bio-Planet organic supermarket – I go crazy in there! The first week it opened I went there every single day! Now I try to be more reasonable…

  13. Michel says:

If they could bring a Trader Joe’s that’s not 45 mins away from my house I would be happy to plop more out for food. Target just makes my money disappear. My husband considers Walmart the bermuda triangle because he gets sucked in there while I go there so much it doesn’t faze me anymore! lol

    • kilax says:

Our Walmart is so big and confusing I just want to get in and out! I have no idea where anything is – not even the things on my list.

  14. Kelly says:

That’s why I try to stick to Aldi. Because they have such a limited inventory, there’s less there for me to discover and decide I must have it right now. If I’m doing a big stock up, I’ll buy no more than three things that aren’t on the list to try and keep it under control.
Otherwise, I could spend all day in Crate and Barrel, Ikea or Trader Joe’s. Mmmm, Trader Joe’s.

    • kilax says:

I love ALDI for the same reason. We do as much of our shopping there as we can! If they don’t have it, they just don’t have it. We still go up and down every aisle though… my husband really likes to. And sometimes they have kind of unique stuff! Then you have to buy a lot of it because they probably won’t have it again. Ha ha. I found these vegan organic bars there in the late summer and loved them but never found them again 🙁

  15. Oh, I have such a hard time controlling myself at the grocery store. ANY grocery store. I think I’ve managed to stick to my actual budget twice in the past two years. Thats it.

  16. J says:

WE are getting a Trader joe’s next year so I am sure I will begin to have that trouble. When Brian and I go grocery shopping its usually Brian who adds more snack foods in than me. I usually have trouble at Target because I just love all the cool stuff they have!

  17. You’re expanding your food horizons!

Although I do have to say, I appreciate Mike’s ability to make a list and stick to it. Keeps me on track if I tag along in grocery shopping.

  18. We never had a whole foods or Trader Joe’s but I hear ya on the Target action. I am just do distracted by everything in that store and always spend WAY too much money! We also had a local health food store in Boise that made me want to try everything (similar to whole foods) and I seriously could only go there on pay day otherwise I would be in big trouble.

The Apple Store is hard, but do how I do make it out without spending much.

The grocery store is hard to do a list for me. Regardless if I shop while hungry or full.
