Skype for dinner

By , November 21, 2011 5:17 am

We normally don’t have a laptop out when we eat dinner*, but Saturday was a special occasion – our first Skype Dinner Date with Gina and Steve (our friends who live in Astoria)!

It was Gina’s idea – we all make the same dish then “eat” together! For our first session, we made Linguine with Broccoli Sauce and Garlic, and Garlic Bread. Steven and I added Boca Chik’n to ours.

This is one of our favorite dishes. The garlic broccoli sauce is light, but super tasty. And the recipe is actually from a vegan cookbook that Gina gave me, called Vegan Italiano. Gina and Steve liked the dish too. We asked them to recommend the next dish for Skype Dinner Date #2!

We try to Skype with Gina and Steve about once a month. We miss them a lot. Skyping is not the same as spending time together in person, but it’s pretty close! And the Skype Dinner Date makes it feel even more personal!

Yes, we’re dorks.

How do you stay in touch with friends who live far away?

*Not gonna lie – we usually eat on the couch, while watching a movie.

What a cool idea! I don’t think I would have ever thought of this. Of course, I’ve never skyped before…
We usually eat at the coffee table/couch in the basement and watch tv shows on Netflix. 😉

What happened to Data’s great interior design? I was going to ask him if I could be his apprentice… :/

This is a cute idea, and that food looks nomalicious. Hope you saved me some!!!

I have heard that the video chat feature on Google+ is much better quality than Skype. I’ve never tried it, so I’m not sure, but just thought I’d mention it!

Ha ha! I got rid of Data’s awesome design right before our call. The runner is all wrinkled now because I let it sit like that for so long.

I forgot to tell you – our cat sitter left a note for us, that on the first day she checked in on Data, he got in to his plastic box and ate all of the food left in the bag! Not much, but lol.

We used gmail last night to video chat with Steven’s fam. I wonder if the G+ video is the same. I will have to check it out! Thanks for the tip.

(Do you like G+? I kind of hate it)

Naughty Data!! How did he get in the box?!

I have a G+ account, but have never even logged in… Sooooooo no opinion.. I guess I don’t care enough about it to try it!

I love this idea! I’m so bad at staying in touch with people even though we have all these tools at our disposal.

  6. Thats such a cool idea. I especially love that you made the same meal. 🙂

I am sad to say that most of my old friends i have lost touch with. I do email my college roommate alot but its hard to stay close with tons of Friends. I feel like my closest friends are the ppl I work with and my running friends because that is where I spend the majority of my time.

  9. Susan says:

What a fun idea! I should start doing this…

  10. ha i love this! my hubby and i skype with our niece and nephews for story time often, but never for dinner dates. we should totally start doing that because they live in dallas and we never see them.

  11. This is such a cute idea! Now that I’m far away from everyone, I would like to do a lot more skyping.

Yep, Dorks! Still cracking up about the orange thing. When we offered Steven an orange and he “took” it. Hilarious!

    • kilax says:

Oh gosh. That was too funny. Of course, he was a bit late with it all…

When should we do our next one?

  13. A Skype dinner date! How modern of you! 🙂 And your dinner looks pretty awesome – I’m going to need to try that. I love Boca Chik’n!

There are multiple Astoria cities. Which one do they live in?

We Skype my wife’s sister who moved to Vancouver, WA earlier this year.
