Hidden weird tan lines

By , October 8, 2011 6:52 am

My most ridiculous tan yet – the inner elbow tan.

It’s most noticeable when I am running or right after, when my arms are all red. Luckily, it is not that noticeable after I cool down!

Running in the full sun this week has brought back my racerback tan with a vengeance. And after its ridiculousness was finally fading away. That’s okay, I do not plan to go strapless anytime soon. Although, it’s a good thing I didn’t run as much when I got married (although it probably would have prevented the tailor from telling me my dress looked tight the day before my wedding), because I would have had to work really hard not to have a ridiculous tan with my dress.

Instead I was just white, white, white!

Have you ever worried about how your funky tan might appear in a particular outfit (I have seen many a strapless bridesmaid dress with crazy tan lines!)?

This post kind of wrote itself. Sorry. And happy Saturday!

Friday Question #168

By , October 7, 2011 6:16 am

What is your favorite genre of books to read?

I really seem to like fictional historical books, like Philippa Gregory’s Tudor series. I read the book then kind of get in to learning more about that time period (usually via wikipedia).

I also like travel books – either fiction or non-fiction! I just finished Cycling Home from Siberia, the story of one man’s three year journey on bike from Siberia (through Japan, China, the Phillipines, Australia, India, the Middle East, and Europe) back to London.  I loved reading about his inside perspective of each country he went through (country list much longer than my short list above).  And his conclusion of how the trip changed him was very interesting too. I definitely recommend this book! Thank you Will (who does not read my blog) for loaning it to me.

I tend to read running books too, but they are kind of slow and dry. I will also read books that friends lend to me, but sometimes it takes me a long time to read them.

And sometimes I like fantasy/sci fi, but it has to be written well. The character’s names can’t be so confusing I can’t remember them.

And that reminds me – I read a book awhile ago that someone loaned to me and was part of a series. It was one of the middle books of the series, but you were supposed to be able to jump right in. It was hard, because there were so many characters (but with normal names) that I could not keep straight. I needed to create a cheat sheet or something!

The winner of the Board Dudes giveaway is #9, Kelly! Kelly, please email me your mailing address and I will send it your way. I hope it helps with your new photography business!

To skip or not to skip (the dressing room)

By , October 6, 2011 6:12 am

When shopping in a store for clothing, do you always try the item on before you purchase it? Or do you sometimes just throw it in the cart and think “I’ll just see if it works when I get home?”

Apparently, if it’s on the clearance rack, I just try it on when I get home. I saw this dress in my size at Target* for $10 and thought I would give it a try. I didn’t think I would be able to wear it this year, but it’s supposed to be 80°F today, so a dress it is! (Note: the dress is actually dark blue)

Would you believe there is someone in my office who gives me grief when I wear a dress to work? Just because they don’t like to wear dresses. Well, for now, I think they are comfortable and fun. Maybe my opinion will change as I get older.

I don’t have much else to say, except I could have saved this for a Friday Question and WHY THE HELL IS SOMEONE PAINTING THEIR NAILS ON THE TRAIN?!?! Yuck! The smell bothers me when it’s my own nails at home!

*You should know that when I write Target, I am saying it in my head as “Tarjay.”

Good News Wednesday

By , October 5, 2011 3:03 pm
  • The race photographers took some awesome pics of Erin and me at the Milwaukee Marathon.  And a great one of me at the finish!

  • And then there’s this. Look at my left foot. Sigh. (And Erin appears to be caught mid sentence, ha ha)

  • My sister sent me a preliminary design for the spectator shirts she is making for the NYC Marathon. I think they are going to be really cute (click to see larger).

  • In non-running news, it’s been in the 70s and sunny in Chicago all week! And will be this way well in to next week! Nice weather, courtesy of the Chicago Marathon. Here is my favorite Chicago Marathon tip – run on the part of the street that is shaded (because on some parts of the course, only half the street is shaded, if any). It will require extra energy to run over to it, but it will be worth it.
  • I have been selected for the DC detail I’ve been talking about. BUT I will not relocate to DC. I will do the detail from Chicago and go to DC occasionally. I am still waiting for this all to be confirmed, but I am about 90% certain it will happen (but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t).
  • I start a group strength class tonight! Yay!

Surprise scarf

By , October 5, 2011 5:02 am

Wow! Another new scarf. I am not sure how to wear this one though. Any ideas?

Thanks Data, for always making my mornings interesting.

I think Data is a bit worried. Last week a huge package of diapers, formula and bottles showed up. Then last night, Steven and I came home with a pack and play*, exersaucer* and a bouncer.

Data literally ran out the door when Steven carried the exersaucer (that big green thing) in. I had to run out in the the driveway, then catch Data before he made his escape in to the wild.

Don’t worry Data! These are not permanent items in our house! We are just getting ready for Gina, Steve and Luca to come visit this weekend!

(And I have already caught Data checking out the baby stuff so he must not be too worried)

*I had no idea what these things were a few months/weeks ago. Now look at me with my fancy baby talk!

Board Dudes Giveaway

By , October 4, 2011 5:17 am

I love my dry erase board calendar on the kitchen/garage door…

Please ignore that these photos are from September!

… and my bulletin board next to my desk. They both make me feel organized (now, whether or not I am…). And the bulletin board allows me to splatter more photos around the house.

I was excited when I saw this Board Dudes dry erase board/bulletin board set at Target for a really good price. I got a set for my sister because teal is her favorite color (and the color is sort of a greenish teal) and I thought she might like using these to get organized too.

Here they are installed in her office:

I bought another set of the four items to give away too! Every item includes wall mounting hardware, and is 11.75″ H x 11.75″ W. The dry erase boards all come with one marker and one magnet.

(Please note, text is all greenish teal – I had to edit the top photo because the right one was not online, but I couldn’t edit the gray text without making it look awful – my sister’s pictures show it correctly)

Milwaukee Marathon Race Report

By , October 3, 2011 5:13 am

New marathon PR! 4:38:35 – 23 minutes and 1 second off of my marathon PR set in Madison. I couldn’t have done it without Erin (check out her race report here), or the support of Steven, and all of you!

Yesterday morning started off early, with a 4:00 am wake-up call. We met my running club friend, Riyanti at 5:00, and her dad drove us to the start. Thank you Riyanti’s dad! I had a bowl of cereal at home, and two bagels with peanut butter and one banana in the car. My goal was to NOT get hungry. Even though eating all of that made me feel gross.

It was cold when we arrived at the start – in the low 40s! I was worried for a second that I under dressed. Erin and I both had throwaway jackets* and I thought I may hold on to it longer than intended.

Me, Erin and Riyanti, all bundled up at the start.

We didn’t! Once we took off and started running, we warmed up and ditched those jackets at mile 1**. The first 13 miles were amazing. Slightly rolling hills, chilly weather, and beautiful scenery! We ran through back country roads with beautiful estates on them. Spectators were scattered, but very energetic, including a guy playing an accordian, a guitarist, and young girls doing a dance routine in their yard.

Erin and I chatted away, like we would during a normal training run. We first saw Steven and Erin’s husband just before mile 12 and were feeling great!

After we passed the guys, we hit the 13.1 mark in 2:17:53, and I was excited to think that we may come in under 4:40! I should mention, our original goal was sub 5:00, and we thought 4:45 was a pipe dream. We were quite pleased with how fast we were going!

But I started to run out of energy at mile 16ish. My body felt fine (just a sore back), I wasn’t hungry (took GUs every 4 miles (excluding 24) and Swedish fish at 18) but the sun was starting to wear me down and I was feeling a bit thirsty despite drinking lots of water. Despite keeping up with running pretty fast, I was starting to fade.

We saw the guys at least three more times after mile 12, and two of my girlfriends from the running club came out to cheer us on too! One of them even ran a lot of mile 20 with us!

The crowds were picking up, and all along, people were saying “Go Erin! Go Kim! You look great!” We did look great, I think, for a lot of the time. Okay, Erin all of the time, me most of the time. Erin was smiling the whole time, and me, again, most of the time.

A lot of the remainder of the run was like this photo above – me either right behind Erin or well behind her. She was doing so so awesome. She had a ton of energy and was feeling great. She got ahead of me and waited for me at water stops a few times (I should mention, we walked one minute every 2 miles (+ mile 25), and at about mile 16, I started filling up one bottle at each water stop) and would wait for me to catch up. I would try to keep up with her, but just couldn’t. It was all I could do to maintain 10:30s when sub 10:00s were easy for her! She waited for me just before 24, we walked a minute at 25, and I told her I would be sad if we couldn’t finish together, but more sad if she finished slow because of me (well, I tried to say that in my incoherent state).

Erin went ahead and finished just over a minute and a half before me, and waited for me at the finish (Steven was at the finish – I love it when he sees me at the end of my races!!!)!

I finished and felt like such a loser and said “I suck.” Erin was quick to remind me that I don’t. I just felt so bad for not being able to keep up with her and “holding her back.” She assured me that I wasn’t, and was stoked about her new PR. Eventually, as we walked back to the car I started to realize:

  • I took over 20 minutes off my PR.
  • I only walked at scheduled walk times and stopped at a few water stops to fill up bottles – NO DEATH MARCH FOR ME!
  • My half times were so close – 2:17:53 and 2:20:42 – that is pretty awesome – I did not slow down a ton in the second half.
  • My average pace was 10:38 and only two of my mile splits were over 11:00.  I ran mile 24 in 10:08. You can see my splits here
  • I pushed hard. I almost did my best.
  • Even though Erin and I did a lot of training together, I should never compare what I cannot do in one moment to what someone else can do. We aren’t the same person!
  • This is my third marathon. I feel like I can definitely improve, but that maybe, I did this marathon “right.”

Now that I am sitting and thinking about it all. I feel better. But like I said, major props to Erin, who pushed me so much. I am so so so so proud of her. I cannot wait to see how she smashes this PR at the Las Vegas Marathon. And a BIG THANKS to my favorite spectator, Steven! He even told me he didn’t see much of the death march around me because I was “running so fast.” What a sweetie!

After the race (and once I was able to walk again) we went to Red Robin. Of course.

P.S. Some of these photos are from Erin’s husband – a huge thanks to him! And the poster photo I stole from Facebook, from my club friend.
P.P.S. Some of these photos are from my new camera and I LOVE the quality of them!

*Funny story, Erin brought a sweatshirt to make in to a throwaway jacket. After she cut in then tried it on, I told her I thought my throwaway jacket would fit her better. It sure did! So we switched. And I had to tease her that my new throwaway jacket did not zip up or close!
**The race asked that you leave your clothes at mile markers and aid stations, so they could easily collect them and take them to finish for your pick-up. Pretty nice. Neither of us wanted our stuff back though!

There are a few other things I want to say, and you can see them if you click “more” below (or if you are looking in Reader, they’re already there).

Training Week 102

By , October 2, 2011 4:25 am

I am training for the NYC Marathon on November 6th. This is the week of the Milwaukee Marathon (October 2nd).

Day 708 | September 26, 2011: cross

I rode the recumbent bike during lunch. I don’t really consider type of workout to be of any benefit to me… except curing the boredom of sitting at my desk during lunch!

Bike Time: 40:00 | Distance: 5.81 | Resistance Level: 5.0

Day 709 | September 27, 2011: strength + 4 m run

I had a strength session with Brian as soon as I got home at 6:00. I told him I had a marathon coming up and asked him not to wear down my legs so much. We did a core-centric workout, using a ball, some fun stretchy resistance bands (the type you attach to a door) and weights. I feel like I am getting better at my strength sessions and this is only the third one (back at it, I mean)!

As soon as Brian left I bolted out the door for a 4 mile run. When I started it was light out and overcast, and when I ended it was dark and raining. And I had left my visor at work. And I forgot my blinking LED lights in the house. Oops. It also seems I was running during the time when people get home and don’t look before they pull in to their driveway, but luckily, I didn’t get hit by a car.

I am kind of bummed it is dark out at 7:00 now. Sure it makes me feel all cozy at night… but lazy too!

As soon as I finished running I took a quick shower then sped to the airport to pick up Steven. How is that for an evening?!

Distance: 4.0 | Temp: high 50s? | Time: 39:27 | Avg Pace: 9:51 | 1: 10:30 | 2: 9:50 | 3: 9:35 | 4: 9:28

Day 710 | September 28, 2011: 3 m run

Another run in the rain… but not in the dark! And I had my visor on this time.

Distance: 3.0 | Start Temp: 58° | End Temp: 56° |  Time: 29:44 | Avg Pace: 9:53 | 1: 10:09 | 2: 9:49 | 3: 9:43

Day 711 | September 29, 2011: rest

Day 712 | September 30, 2011: 2.5 m run

The sun finally came out (after not seeing it for four days), but with it, came the wind. I felt comfortable in a short sleeved shirt, but that wind was brutal!

Distance: 2.5 |  Start Temp: 49° | End Temp: 49° | Time: 24:13 | Avg Pace: 9:41 | 1: 9:58 | 2: 9:34 | 3: 4:40

Day 713 | October 1, 2011: 3 m run

Last run before the marathon! Erin and I picked up our packets then came back to my place and did an easy short run to loosen up for the race!

Distance: 3.0 |  Temp: high 50s  | Time: 28:47 | Avg Pace: 9:35 | 1: 9:34 | 2: 9:34 | 3: 9:37

Day 714 | October 2, 2011: Milwaukee Marathon (26.35 miles – I need to learn to run the tangents!)

Week Summary: 38.85 miles

Fairly easy week… in prep for the marathon! I can’t wait to run it! Erin and I are up early today to ride to Milwaukee, and off running at 7:30 (not 8:00, but 7:30 – they were very clear about the start time!)!

I love the race shirt! And the fact that they gave us a reusable ice pack – I actually needed a new one (fyi: an old ice pack may not hold up if you stand on it).
