Photos while running: yay or nay?

By , September 21, 2011 5:10 am

I used to take my camera with me on nearly every run. I felt like documenting my runs visually encouraged me to keep running. After I joined the running club at the beginning of this year I rarely ran with my camera and got a little bit faster (probably because I wasn’t screwing around taking pictures).

But I still sometimes bring my camera! If I am running on a new trail, I figure there might be something I want to capture and remember. And when I don’t have my camera with me, I still take craptactular pictures with my phone camera (examples below).

What’s your opinion on taking photos while running – silly? Fun? Unnecessary?

For me, I don’t want to get home and think “I wish I would have taken a photo of that!” because I love to share photos. So to me, it’s normal. A lot of things are normal to me that shouldn’t be though…

Anyway, I ended up on an accidental trail run yesterday. I found a park with trails near my hotel (Lapping Park) and decided to check it out. It ended up being trail trails – not the crushed limestone ones I am used to! Okay, okay, they were not 100% technical the entire time, but there was a lot of careful maneuvering. And you know what? It was fun! It was exactly what I needed – some time alone in nature to zone out. I saw more deer than people on the trail, and still had a fun run despite not following the signage very well.

See my deer friend below?

Side Note: A lot of my middle toenail on my left foot came off last night. This is the second time I have lost a lot of toenail in Louisville (well, Indiana this time). I think it’s from wearing flats around all day.

I’d rather hear about your runs with pictures than without. How exciting is “I saw a deer while running” if we can’t see it? 😛

Love the pics! Until this year I’d never taken pics while on a run. I was one of those people who’d never stop running until done.

    very pretty!
I took a camera with me at SFM but ended up not taking many photos – I wish I’d taken more, because I liked the ones I did get.

Camera is a must. I like to see where you go running!

If I ever ran, I would want to document it!

I love your pictures! I am one of those people who always wish I’d taken photos pater. I never think of it in the moment. I’d like to develop that habit 🙂

I love that you will whip out a camera at any moment 🙂 When I ran alone and would take my iPhone with me I used to take more pictures. Now, though, I hardly ever run with my phone so I take significantly fewer photos.

  7. I love running pictures! I think it’s cool when people document the places they run – especially when they are as beautiful as the shots you have above!

  8. YAY YAY YAY! I’m such a camera runner. I freak out when I have to leave it behind on shorter runs, because that is usually the time I see something I would have wanted to take a pic of. So I’m all about it. But I do agree, that my speeds have gotten faster when I wasn’t messing around taking pics. So now I try to take photo breaks when I take gu breaks. It maybe a little longer of a walk break, but maybe it won’t be every five minutes.

where do you PUT your camera when you’re running?? granted, i have no actual running gear so maybe this is a dumb question? but on days when my ipod isn’t charged and i grab my phone instead it drives me NUTS that i have to hold the stupid thing the whole time…

If I am running with my camera I put it on my bat belt. Okay, I put the camera case on my running belt and put the camera in it (I just call it my bat belt because it has so much on it). Here is a good pic of it – http://www.ilaxstudio.com/kic-lwalk1_blank.jpg – it’s the little black case.

When I run with my phone I put it in a plastic bag in my bra (that is what I did tonight and for this run) or in a pocket in my shorts or in a pocket in my shirt. I don’t have a smart phone so it fits!

The best thing when I was in Wisconsin was being able to take my time taking pictures. I wasnt hurried or rushing as I so often feel, and I love how good my pictures came out. I don’t know if I could take pictures while exercising, because I think I would feel rushed.
I had a strange bruise on my toenail recently and suddenly one day it fell off. NO idea what caused that!!

A lot of times I take pics while I am moving and they turn out really interesting! The ones I took tonight are all distorted. It’s strange!

I wonder if your work shoes are constricting your toes too!

  11. I love the pictures! I haven’t quite figured out how to maneuver using a camera at the same time as running, but I suppose I have to practice! Maybe just beginning by carrying my camera or phone would be a start!

Welcome to the DIRT side Kim. I love dirt trail running. Not much in our area (Chicagoland) but still enough out there.

I like that you take your camera with you. I don’t often take mine but I’m sure my blog posts would be way more fun with photos.

I love the top photo, and the bottom photo with the deer.
