Garbage digger

If you saw something that you wanted sitting out in someone’s garbage (or near the road), would you grab it (would you be a garbage digger)?

I often make fun of my mom for grabbing stuff off the road that people throw out, but, she did score a pretty schweet patio set that way. And I think I can no longer make fun of her. My brother pointed out a weight bench sitting out with someone’s trash today and I made him turn around so we could check it out. I decided to grab it to show to Steven (after knocking on the people’s door to see if they were really getting rid of it).

If it can fit in my car I think we are taking it home. I guess I am now a garbage digger. Yay or nay?

Yay. My neighbor growing up was moving to FL and I was getting ready to move into my first college apartment. He put out a chair that I snatched up. He made it clear that he didn’t need it, so I took it.

    Sweet!

Some of my best memories are actually of all the stuff my mom and I dug out of the trash when we lived in an apartment. And I scored some neat stuff during dorm move outs at the end of each school year in college, too. So, yeah, I’ll totally pick up stuff from the curb or outside a dumpster.

I would probably do the same. I probably have before. I like that you knocked on the door and asked if they were getting rid of it. 🙂 Some people put things on the curb so that people can pick it up if they want. I’ve seen ads on Craigslist saying that things are on the curb if anyone’s interested.

Well if you’d really like to dig through some garbage, there are always plenty of mattresses and couches in my alley that you could pick through. Okay sometimes the couches are broken in half, but I’m sure they could be fixed!

  5. I’ve never done it but if something good was out there, I would!

I don’t, but stuff we’ve thrown out gets taken pretty quick by neighbors and passer-bys. Normally within a few hours.

Oh yeah, us too. Sometimes even quicker. It’s crazy, right? But I am happy when someone takes our stuff to use. Not so much when they come looking for medal and take what they can then leave a huge mess.

I think maybe a third of our furniture is someone else’s trash. In our last Chicago apartment, we were close to the garbage area, so (1) we had first dibs on stuff people were getting rid of when they moved out and (2) many times people just left the stuff outside our door instead of going the extra 20 feet through the trash area door. All of that is to say that we have no shame in our game when it comes to garbage picking. 🙂
