Friday Question #141
Do you send out a holiday card? What kind of card do you send out?
We (being me and Steven) actually haven’t sent out a holiday card at all the three years we have been married. I would love to do one of those photo cards someday. We’ll see.
We still do a holiday card with my family though. We (my family) have been doing one every year, since I was born (and I am sure since before) and you can see almost all of them here. I love the one where we’re all in a tree and my dad is cutting the tree down with a chainsaw.
This year’s card went back to our photo style roots – something ridiculous involving a car (look at the link and you’ll understand what I mean).
A young kid driving a car, in fact.
The photo above is the scan I did of the card that arrived in the mail, but here is the clean version I sent my dad to use:
Obviously, there has been some photoshopping done to this card, and not just to make it look like it was moving.
We took the truck picture against a blank brick background:
Notice my sister and her boyfriend are missing, the kids are missing, and Courtney and Nick have different faces in the photo above than in the final photo. Yeah, I added all of those things in. Fun Times.
That’s such a great holiday tradition! Those cards are such great moments in your family history, I love seeing all the different stages!
I try to send out cards every year, but I didn’t have time this year with grading and whatnot.
My mom and I are talking about this right now–do you get annoyed when people send a card with just a signature? Apparently, some advice columnist in Richmond responded to such a query by saying that you should be grateful and appreciative to get any card at all. I still like messages, and when I send cards, I write really long notes in each one.
I do like just getting cards, but I like the ones with letters in them. It’s cool when people type one out and use it for each card!
I send cards out every year but I almost don’t ever year. I have never sent out a couples card though and never used my own photos. This year I just made sure to get cards without dogs on them. My parents had their dog put down last Oct 2009 and Dad got upset that a lot of people (even his own daughter!) sent him a card featuring a dog on the front (never mind that it looked exactly like Delilah!). This year I went out of my way to NOT have a dog on my cards. 😉
Cool! My mom and I love your card!!!
Thanks!
I love creative cards like that. It is AWESOME…we always send a photo card and a letter, but it’s not one of those boring “my son is an honor student” letters. We try to make it funny and self deprecating. Happy holidays!
We had good intentions this year of doing our cards over Thanksgiving, but it didn’t happen. We receive very few cards these days, almost all from my husband’s side of the family.
I loved looking at your family Christmas cards. They are a hoot! And how adorable was your Mom in the 80s – she had kind of a Lorraine Bracco look going on.
Nice photoshopping skills, Kim.
Thank you 🙂
Last year was the first time the hubs and I sent out a year-end newsletter thingy: we’d just moved to Springfield, after all, and felt the need to do some sort of mass-mailing to make sure folks knew our new address and all. His sister sends out a photo card thing every year, mainly to showcase the growing kids (3 boys). We’re not doing anything this year (unless he decides next week that yes, we should send out *some* cards, before the year end!). Maybe next year, there should be a major update for folks then. *grin!*
btw: LOVE the chainsaw/tree pic. Very creative and fun 🙂
Very cool! Have a great holiday!
I didn’t realize you were a Photoshop user (well, who isn’t these days). Nice work on the photo.
As for cards I like to send out, I usually try to find something with penguins on it. And a general holiday message. This year I got lazy and used some leftover cards (without penguins – Gah!) But I picked up some on clearance yesterday that do have penguins for next year).
I do a lot of stuff in PS. I have been using it for a long time. I have a feeling there is a lot I don’t know!
I have been reusing cards for a few years too. Shh 😉
TOO Crazy that you were able to photoshop that! I’m sure that 90% of the people you sent them to didn’t even notice.
I love sending out the holiday cards. But, I don’t have any particular theme. We should work on that.
I LOVE that you have this family tradition! GRRRR, why didn’t someone tell me to do this when I had a baby!!!!! I feel like I totally missed out! (I’m adding this to my Parent Fail list)
I love the dumptruck photo! (or whatever that thing is) Your parents are great sports!
I agree that it’s awesome that your family has this tradition. I don’t think my parents even sent cards this year. First time I can remember when they didn’t. I like sending them even in the age of Facebook 🙂
I’ve been waiting to see this year’s edition! Great job on the photoshopping! Can you give me a crash course on photoshop some day?
Of course! When we come in February?! 🙂
(I know I keep saying that – Steven said we can buy the tickets in the first or second week of Jan.!)
