Favorite actors
I want to be able to bend like that. ^^^
Steven and I saw Black Swan last night. I have always* had a crush on Natalie Portman, and will see any movie she’s in (either in the theater or on DVD), no matter how good (The Professional, V for Vendetta, Brothers) or bad (Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, Garden State). Steven thinks it’s ridiculous that I would want to see a movie just because she is in it, but surely, I am not the only one who does that…
Do you ever see movies just because a certain actor is in it (or rather, does your interest to see a movie ever start because of a certain actor?)? Which actor?
The movie was very interesting and well done. I think it deserves all of the rave reviews it’s getting. It tells the dark story of Nina Sayers, who wants to be the perfect ballerina, but struggles with her inner demons and obsessive personality. Actually, there are many parallels to her ballet career and my running career – we both strive to be perfect, the best!
Ha! I am totally kidding! Big time!
Anyway, everyone has very different taste in movies, but I wanted to say that I enjoyed this one. It made me want to go to the ballet (never been). And I had to appreciate the work that went in to the movie. Portman took ballet until she was in her early teens (I think) then started practicing for this movie a year in advance. Portman and Mila Kunis both lost about 20 pounds each to play these roles.
Speaking of weight, did you see that blurb this week about New York City Ballet dancer Jenifer Ringer? A New York Times critic wrote a review of her work as the Sugar Plum Fairy in “The Nutcracker,” saying she “looked as if she’d eaten one sugar plum too many.” The remark is very interesting, considering she looks extremely slim to me. The Today Show did an interview with Ringer, and I think she is very well posed:
The original blurb I read is here.
I normally don’t talk about weight/size/etc., but wow, I have to say, Ringer does not look plump to me at all. Of course, I know NOTHING about ballet.
Before she played Queen Amidala in Star Wars.
Here we go again…I’ve always had a crush on Natalie Portman too! I can’t wait to see Black Swan!
I will admit to having a crush on Reese Witherspoon. I always want to see whatever movie she’s in just because I love her! Ha. 😉
I’m that way with Christian Bale. I know a lot of people hate him after his blow-up on the set of Terminator Salvation, but whatever, I still think he has an amazing acting portfolio. And I am starting to get that way with Mark Wahlberg. So I will definitely be seeing The Fighter!
Let me know if you ever want a buddy to go with you to the ballet! 🙂 I saw the Moscow Ballet perform Swan Lake when I was in college and it was A-Maz-ing!
I like Wahlberg too. But really didn’t like Lovely Bones. What did you think of it?
I really want to see this movie. But I feel like I might wait until it’s on dvd, because it looks a little dark for my comfort!
I love Natalie Portman too! I can’t imagine how she managed to lose 20 pounds – she was already so tiny. It always amazes me how actors just lose and gain weight for roles – while us mere mortals have such a struggle with it…
I used to see all Ed Norton movies but haven’t felt the need lately. Now I am more interested in a movie if Robert Downey Jr. is in it, especially if he narrates or talks a lot in it. 🙂 My roomie is very big into wanting to see movies if her favorite actors are in them- most specifically Bruce Willis.
Did you see The Soloist? How about Red?
I will see most any movie which Morgan Freeman has a part. Granted, he has been in some pretty bad films over the years, but HE is always spectacular and, in general, I’ve enjoyed everything he’s ever done.
You didn’t like “Garden State”?? I was seriously pumped about that movie for months before it came out, and I thought it was really good. I even own it and have a poster of it in the apartment. That all being said, I might think the characters are whiny now. It’s funny how movies that you liked in yours teens now seem totally lame…
I really want to see “Black Swan”, but I’m nervous that it will creep me out. I’m about to go home for break though, so I’m sure I’ll have free time to see it.
Ugh, I definitely could not tell that she’s “big” for a ballerina, but I don’t know anything about ballet. Except “plié”, I know what that is.
I couldn’t get in to Garden State. Perhaps I should watch it again though. I don’t think I really care for that Zach guy (not sure of his name).
I’ll see any movie with Seth Rogen because he is my celebrity boyfriend (I love chubby, funny dorks) and there have been some BAD ones.
It’s comments like that one about the dancer’s weight that make our ability to move away from sizist attitudes so difficult. WTF does it matter if she was plump? Does that mean no one would or should see her dance? Bullshit! Ugh.
There was a point in time I would see anything with Harrison Ford but not so much anymore. Now if a movie looks like crap, I just won’t see it regardless of who’s in it.
BTW I actually liked Mr. Magorium. What didn’t you like about it?
I don’t recall. I think I was bored with the story of it.
I really want to see that movie. I love Natalie Portman! Especially in V for Vendetta.
Robert Downey Jr. is one. Philip Seymour Hoffman is another.
Director wise, it’s anything by Quentin Tarantino.
I LOVED Natalie Portman in The Other Boleyn Girl. I am obsessed with period pieces. Oh, and Eric Bana is in that, too—>hottie.
I am actually doing a post about this tonight, too! Don’t think I copied. 🙁 It just makes me sad how dancers feel pressure to be so thin. I think the dancer from the NYB looked very thin already, and the fat that they implied she was “fat”? That is sick!
Hmmmm…..I guess my current boy crush would be Robert Pattinson (I know, I am really 14 years old), and I will definitely see any Reese Witherspoon movie, too (which is perfect…because they are in “Water For Elephants” this spring!)
Oh my gosh. Holly. Have you read ANY of the Tudor books by Phillipa Gregory? LOVE. THEM.
