The weather on Sunday

By , October 6, 2010 7:00 am

Ugh, I do not need people at work pointing out to me how “hot” it is supposed to be on Sunday. Yes. I am aware. Yes, I would prefer not to run in the heat. BUT there is nothing I can do about.

Except sit here and be annoyed that people seem to find some joy in telling me how “hot” it is supposed to be.

Seriously? 72° is not that “hot” compared to what I ran in this summer. Where are these people getting their forecast? One person said 80° to me. This screenshot above is from weather.com.

Do you freak out about the weather before a race or other event?

We had an outdoor wedding, and I remember it rained the entire week before and I was a bit concerned… but the weather turned out perfect!

I do obsessively check the forecast for races and other events, but I know there is nothing I can do about it. So I don’t freak out about it. It is what it is. And I am like a chameleon baby, versatile and ready for anything.

As long as I am not running in the pouring rain this Sunday, I should be happy. I just need to find a visor at the expo or something. Help me remember that Erin!

And let’s look on the bright side, “hot” weather gives me all sorts of excuses for running “slower”!

  1. Tom Skilling’s forecast from a few days ago had 80s this weekend. I just checked it and it still does.

I hate running in warmer temps so I do tend to obssess over race-day weather. However, for my half, I was on vacation the week before and didn’t have internet access so I didn’t check on the weather at all. I was tempted to text a friend to check for me but Joey told me to relax and enjoy my vacation because I couldn’t do anything about the weather. It ended up being cool but also pouring down rain! haha. Kinda glad I didn’t know about that until the day before.

  3. Mica says:

Ugh, I freaked out about the weather at Chicago, but you’re right, there’s really nothing that you can do, other than be prepared. 🙂

  4. Kim says:

Freak out? No. Obsess endlessly? Yes. 🙂 72 is the highest it will be at the end of the race. The beginning will be much cooler… and probably it won’t hit 72 until the end or even after the race. You’re going to be great!!! The breeze coming off the lake will be glorious!

Ack. This morning, in the dark and 47 degrees, I was WISHING for THIS EXACT WEATHER for Sunday. But, like you said, not a damn thing I can do about it. I do obsess – I want to make sure I’m really wearing the right thing.

I can’t wrap my brain around what pace I should run. My runs lately have been so perfect, so then that little voice starts talking to me, nudging me, telling me I can go faster than what I know is smart. I’ve been arguing with myself all week!

    • kilax says:

Race the pace you have been practicing… at least at first! That is my plan! I don’t want to exhaust myself right away 😉

I hope it is at least cool in the beginning!

I would be annoyed at people taking joy in that too! Rude. I have been checking weather.com like a madwoman as well. We trained all summer so we will be good regardless of the forecast!

  7. The thing that REALLY worries me about Sunday when I see the weather forecast is that I started all my training runs at 6am, and every time I finished a run I thought “it was worth waking up earlier, the weather now is HOT. The marathon doesn’t start until 7:30am AND I’m running another 6 more miles than I had in training. So I’ll be starting 1.5 hours later, and running another hour on top of my longest run. NOT looking forward to the heat and the sun at that time.

    • kilax says:

Yeah. I won’t sugar coat it – it’s going to suck in the sun. But at least it won’t be in the 90s! 🙂

  8. jamie says:

I check the weather obsessively. The only time I freaked out was before the 07 Chicago marathon… hi 90’s. It should be coolish for most of the morning. Just remember when running downtown it feels warmer than it really is. Might want to go with the tank top!

  9. Joanne says:

You’ll be fine. You trained in the heat so you know exactly what you need to do to have a good run. Besides, if you start finding that you are getting too nervous or anxious, take a deep breath and say to yourself, “I’m going to treat this as simply my longest training run yet”. It’s your race and you can do what you want with it – just cross that finish line.

I can’t stand the wind. I don’t like the rain and I’m not a hot weather runner but worst of all is the wind. Even walking in wind is miserable in my book.

  10. Erin says:

I wish the Chicago weather people would shut up about 80! Maybe they just want to be on the high side so that people will be prepared. Even though it’s been 3 years and the race learned from their mistakes I think the city still worries about a 2007 repeat.

But, you’re right. If it’s hot then you can totally use that as a time justification if you’re not happy with the final outcome 🙂

    • kilax says:

Yeah… I am with you. I was like “Where the hell did this 80 come from?!” And that is another thing someone said to me “I hope they have enough water.” Yeah. I think they figured that one out. Ugh.

  11. Jen says:

Geez! Your co-workers are real negative Nellies! You’ll be fine this Sunday! A few degrees one way or the other won’t matter. It was 95! this summer when you were running. This Sunday will feel like heaven compared to that!

  12. I was wondering when 72 became “hot”. Maybe for running? Weather is just too finicky for me to fuss over. Like you said, it is what it is. I’m glad it’s not going to rain for you though! Huge plus!

  13. Alice says:

i do check weather obsessively before big events, but it’s just so that i can be adequately prepared! 🙂

  14. J says:

I check the weather all the time! I am on weather.com at least 3x a day! Hopefully it wont be too hot for you and you will have a great race!

  15. I check the weather starting 10 days before a race. And I check the weather every single day. I am a weather checking fool!

  16. 72 sounds like a dream to me. sit in a sauna this week and it will feel very nice 🙂

i try not to check it too much, as I can’t change it

  17. Stephany says:

Oh, 70 degrees is AWESOME to run in. 😉 I’ve ran in 95 degree weather with humidity in the 60%’s so I’ve been psyched about the weather lately, it’s been in the high 60s, low 70s.

I don’t really check the weather forecast, though. Honestly, I never check it period until it starts getting cold around here.

  18. I would trade our Sunday weather for yours any day! Except you don’t want the rain.. shame. 😉

I’ve never really had any events where I need to worry about the weather. Okay, maybe a few outdoor parties but I was generally okay and only got anxious if it was supposed to rain.

  19. Madison says:

Yea… I have been obsessing with the weather! I ran my first marathon in 2 inches of rain… I was hoping the weather gods would lookout for me this time around! No such luck! Oh well…70’s are better than 90’s, I suppose!

  20. I hate when people do that! Yes, the weather isn’t exactly ideal (for running…I am going to have a great weekend playing outside with the kids) but it isn’t like that one day we ran this summer that was so hot it was kind of awful. And even that was still fun, just so so hot. Obviously no one can control the weather so why do people obsess over it? I understand obsessively checking to see what it is supposed to be (because that is what I do), but stressing out over it makes no sense. Why stress over something you can’t change?

I think you are going to do awesome and I can not wait to hear about it!

    • kilax says:

      Thanks Tori! 🙂

That is what I think – do they want me to get all worked up over it? Yeah, it’s not ideal or what I want, but, uh, what can I do about it? Ha ha.

  21. Shannon says:

I haven’t been reading or commenting on blogs for a while. Ive just been so busy! But I wanted to wish you the best of luck on Sunday. Regardless of temperature, you’re going to do great!

I was supposed to do a half last fall and it snowed! In October! I bailed on that one and ended up running one in November…it was 60+ degrees! Go figure 🙂

    • kilax says:

Thanks Shannon! I understand why you are so busy with sweet little Noah. Aww.

A half in the snow? I would have bailed too! Weather patterns are so strange (well, can we even call them patterns? :P).

  22. Adam says:

Hey, did you hear about how hot it is supposed to be tomorrow? 🙂

Seriously, good luck tomorrow! I set up the txt msg dealie for you (and will NOT have my phone in the bedroom as I am 2 hours behind you).

RE: Heat. Think of it this way, you did all sorts of runs this summer that hot – or hotter. You’ll finish either way
