Training Week 46

By , September 5, 2010 10:14 am

My next race is the Chicago Half Marathon on September 12. I am also training for the Chicago Marathon on October 10.

Day 316 | August 30, 2010: yoga

I did the YogaWorks 45-min Beginners DVD – and my neck was sore again. I need to work on that! I also think it may be time to start doing one of the “harder” yoga DVDs again. Maybe.

Day 317 | August 31, 2010: 6 m run

This 6-miler felt a little bit harder than it should. I think I just started off too fast. I had to stop and and take a few quick breaks. But, the sky was overcast, it was raining a bit, and my knee only had a slight ache, so that was nice. Oh, and I only drank 8 ounces of water. What the heck?

I ran the same back and forth one-mile course behind Steven’s parent’s house that I did last Sunday. It varies enough that I didn’t mind going back and forth. The only annoying part is getting to the end and doing a 180 to turn around – I really slow down on those, to protect my knees.

Distance: 6.0 | Start Temp: 83° | End Temp: 85° | Time: 59:21 | Avg Pace: 9:53 | 1: 9:36 | 2: 9:48 | 3: 10:06 | 4: 10:15 | 5: 9:57 | 6: 9:34

Day 318 | September 1, 2010: rest

Day 319 | September 2, 2010: rest

Day 320 | September 3, 2010: rest

Day 321 | September 4, 2010: rest

Day 322 | September 5, 2010: rest

Week Summary: 6.00 miles

I had other priorities and was unable to exercise the last 5 days of this week. Hopefully, that will mean my legs are well rested!

I was supposed to run 18 miles on Saturday or Sunday and did not. I was thinking about running them on Monday the 6th, even though I have a half marathon on Sunday the 12th. My logic is that I sometimes run long on Sundays then the following Saturday – this is basically the same time frame.

What would you do – run the 18-miler on Monday and a half the following Sunday? Or skip the 18-miler?

That’s so tough – it depends on how important the half is…if you’re thinking of that half as a fun run, I’d do 18. If your time at the half is important to you, I’d probably skip it…

(feeling pretty good today – see you at the 20 miler! and in answer to your question on my blog, the Kenosha Nike outlet is where I shop…it’s only about 15 minutes from me)

  2. Jamie says:

I’ve run a 20 miler and 1/2 marathon back to back so I may not be the best person to ask 😉 Though I do think it’s important to get the long run done as long as your not hurt so I would do the run on Monday.

I’m with Bobbi – if your time on the half is important to you or you want to give it your best effort, I’d skip 18 (or maybe cut it down to 10). But if you’re just happy to be running it, then I think you’d be fine doing 18 tomorrow and just making sure you give your legs some loving during the week :). I hope the family emergency is getting better for you.

  4. Erin says:

I’d do the 18 if you can. That will be better prep for the marathon than the half will be. But, if you can’t get in the 18 it won’t be the end of the world, as you know. Just do what you can.

  5. Mica says:

I’d check the weather for the half. If it looks like the conditions will be miserable and you will need all your energy to finish it, I’d skip the 18-miler. However, if you’re looking to run it as a fun, easy race, running 18 on Monday probably wouldn’t be so bad.

…Also, it’s Monday right now, so you’ve probably already made your decision.

It is a good idea to look at the weather!

It turns out I cannot run the half on Sunday and still haven’t done the 18. I am hoping to do them this Fri. Fingers crossed!

  6. Adam says:

Honestly, I wouldn’t do the full 18…..but I would get something in. Maybe 13 or so? You don’t want to be so tired or sore for your half in the next week. BUT, I would ramp it back up in 2 weeks (the week after the half).

Take care – it is a difficult time right now. Running can wait.

  7. Katie H. says:

Hmm, I’m not sure what I would do. Way to take rest days though- your legs must be thanking you!

I just noticed your tagline- I really like it! 🙂

Curious to see what you decided. Hope everything went well.

I found out I cannot run the half on Sunday anyway, so I will run the 18 this Friday. HOPEFULLY!

I went out to run it yesterday and my knee hurt 🙁

      How’s your training going?

  9. k8 says:

No clue. Have fun! I do my race that day, toooooo!!!!!

  10. Liz says:

I would probably do the 18 and then completely rest until the half. Hope whatever you decided works out!!

  11. Ali says:

It depends on what your goal race is. If you are running the marathon as you goal then I would run 10 – 14 miles Monday (which was yesterday ha ha) then run a 3 mile warm up before the half, run the half, then run a couple mile cool down to get the mileage in.

If your goal is the half, then I wouldn’t worry to much about the missed mileage.
