Instantly clicked
Have you ever met with someone for the first time and instantly clicked?
That was what I felt like when I finally got to met Gina in person last night, after knowing her online for over 4 years! I suppose, after knowing her for so long though, it wasn’t so much “instantly clicking” but just feeling like I was catching up with an old friend!
Me and Gina
Steven and I got back from our fun weekend* in Guttenberg with Erin and Jason yesterday around 4:00 then almost immediately turned around and drove down to Chicago to meet up with Gina and her husband Steve**. We went to dinner then hung out in their hotel lobby for quite a bit. It was one of those times where I knew it was getting too late and that I really needed to leave to make the long drive home, but just didn’t want to!
All four of us
Gina and Steve are both extremely friendly and have great sense of humor. And they’re so fun to talk to – we could relate about so many things and had a great time talking about NYC vs Chicago, our cats, cars, food, and so on. Gina is super animated and funny, and she had all these cute little mannerisms that I would have never known about if I hadn’t met her in person. Now when we are sending emails back and forth I can picture her and imagine her Long Island accent. Ha ha.
Now I am just sad we don’t live closer.
I’ve asked this before but have you met any of your closest friends online?
I was saying to Gina last night, some people act all ashamed that they met people online (especially for dating) but I think it is a great way to meet people and share interests! And when you meet up with someone in person that you already know online, it’s completely different, because you have so much to talk about off the bat. It’s like you skip the whole awkward “figuring each other out” phase (usually, anyway).
*I will have to write a weekend recap – I rarely do that, but we had a lot of fun.
**We both teased the guys – do you think you can remember each others names?
My sister actually met her husband online! I have made two “real life” friends through blogging, which is cool.
I can’t call any of my closest friends ones that I have met online, but I certainly did the online dating thing, and I was never ashamed of that. I had no problem telling people I was doing the Match.com thing. I think people of different generations have varied views on it, but social networking has changed how we know and meet people.
yep, husband AND a best friend. it’s the way to go. i do know that people have “shame” around meeting people online. i’m sure i did at some point, i just don’t remember. i think it’s the thought that you are not good enough to meet someone in person and form a friendship…which is total BS!
Yay! I’m glad you had so much fun meeting Gina.
I’ve had it go both ways. Sometimes meeting someone online first can make meeting for the first time easier. But I’ve met people who I had a great relationship with online, but then didn’t “click” in person.
My closest friends are still people I knew in person first.
One of my great friends I met at a running group, BUT she had been following me online for awhile prior to that and didn’t know it! Another great friend I did meet blogging then we started running together too
I’ve met YOU and Erin and a few other people (one of whom turned out to be completely different and way more awkward that I had envisioned). I like to meet people online too, though sometimes, I am conscious of the weird stigma attached to it.
Glad you have a new in-real-life and in-blog-world friend!
I have another blogger friend who says the same has happened to her – that she met someone and they turned out completely different than she had envisioned.
I’ve definitely had that instant connection with someone although it’s been super rare so far. I think once I leave my hometown that whole instant clicking thing will happen a lot more often.. hopefully.’
I haven’t met any of my online friends yet but I know that I will eventually. I’m looking forward to the day because I have instantly clicked with a lot of them. 🙂
I am surprised you have not met anyone yet! Do you live really far away from everyone you know online?
FOUR years? wow. That is pretty amazing. I have met a few of my close friends online. Luckily, the ones that come to mind are here in PHX so it is a bit less distance.
what a fun visit. i’ve gone on a date or two with people from online but they were total busts. i have yet to meet a blogger in person but cant wait to at the HLS. Are you going??
I am not going to HLS! I hope you have a great time there!
I have met a few of my blogger friends; in most cases it went great. One of them I met was instant…and we are actually having dinner again Thursday. I think she will be a lifelong friend. In another case, I thought it went well but since having met her she has been very odd to me and basically barely speaks to me, so that is kinda weird. In all other cases, I think if the time/dates work out, I will see them all again.
I wish there was a way to have a runner/triathlete blogger convention! How much fun would that be!!!
I think you are on to something with the runner/triathlete blogger idea. I mean, if they can have the Healthy Living Summit, why can’t we have that? Hmm, co-chairs? (Right, like we don’t have enough OTHER things going on!)
I haven’t met anyone online that I blog with yet… Most of them live pretty far away from me.
Looking at that picture I’m wondering why my legs refuse to tan. Sigh. I’m pretty lucky, all my blog meet ups were successfully great! When I started blogging I never thought I would be meeting my readers. Heck, I didn’t even think I would have readers! The people that I met and friended have been amazing!
We had such a great time! THANK YOU!!!
I think I could talk about NY v Chicago all day long.
I instantly clicked with Erin. 🙂
