Newman’s Own Organic Review: Cookies!

By , March 27, 2010 5:53 am

I didn’t wait too long to dig into my Newman’s Own Organic stash. In fact, my sister, Christina, and her boyfriend, Will, arrived for a visit on the day I received the package – perfect excuse to open a few things!

And open away we did… we tried quite a bit! There was so much though, that I will separate the reviews into a few posts, starting with… COOKIES!!!

In this post, I will review:

  • Fig Newmans (Wheat-Free and Dairy-Free)
  • Fig Newmans (Low Fat) not vegan
  • Hermits (original)
  • Hermits (ginger)
  • Newman-O’s (original)
  • Newman-O’s (chocolate)
  • Alphabet Cookies (chocolate)

Newman Cookies Review

The exciting thing about Newman’s Own Organics is in the title… they are organic! So you don’t have to worry about what is in them. You can actually read the ingredient list without wondering what the heck some things are! Even though the calorie count is similar to their conventional counterparts, I didn’t feel awful after eating them (physically and mentally).

Fig Newmans (Wheat-Free and Dairy-Free and Low Fat)

Fig Newmans

Fig Newmans

I received a few packages of Fig Newmans to review, regular, low-fat and wheat-free and dairy-free. Only the last ones were vegan, so those are the first we opened. We couldn’t help but compare the Newman products to their non-organic counterparts, in this case, Fig Newtons!  My first impression when eating one was “Yummy! This tastes even better than a Fig Newton!” I thought it had a much stronger, and more natural taste.

The other reviewers (Steven, Christina and Will) said in comparison to Fig Newtons, the outside crust was a bit too crumbly, but they still liked them. And that they fact that they were organic was a huge plus!

Hermits (original and ginger)

Newman Hermits

Yummy, Hermits! The Hermits are a soft and chewy cookie – that is exactly how I prefer my cookies. It was easy to overeat these. The original ones do not have ginger in them, but strangely, I thought they had a ginger taste (molasses is the third ingredient, they also have figs, oats and raisins in them, among other things). I really liked the originals! The ginger ones were really ginger-y, so if you don’t like ginger, you probably wouldn’t like them.

Newman-O’s (original and chocolate)

Newman-Os

The original Newman-Os disappeared the fastest! Everyone LOVED them and said they preferred them more than regular Oreos. I definitely thought they tasted better. The chocolate flavor is stronger, and the creamy filling has a smoother, more velvety texture!

A few days after we opened the Newman-Os, Christina bought Double Stuf Oreos so we could do a blind taste test.

They even look the same!

The outcome? We could all tell which one was the Oreo because they are so thick! And it was hard to compare the two because of that.

Our recommendation to Newman’s? Make double-stuf! Your originals are already so good, they would be even better with more creme!

Steven and I also tried chocolate Newman-Os. Just as good as the original Newman-Os, but in chocolate! Same creamy, velvety filling, and an intense chocolate flavor. If you are in the mood for chocolate, this is the cookie for you!

Alphabet Cookies (chocolate)

Newman Alphabet Cookies

The Alphabet cookies are hard, crunchy chocolate cookies. I have to admit, I didn’t love this as much, but just because I do not crave chocolate cookies! The flavor was good, but I am rarely in the mood for something this chocolaty (the same could be said about the chocolate Newman-Os). When I told Steven this, he asked if I was his wife. It is true – I just don’t crave chocolate that often!

However, he did put them in my ice cream last night, and I thought that was a superb idea!

Conclusion

I was very impressed with all of these cookies. They had such vibrant tastes and wonderful texture. They are a great alternative to artificially-flavored cookies! I am especially addicted to the Hermits and Fig Newmans now! I plan on picking some up in the stores when I get a craving in the future.

Have you tried any of the Newman’s cookies? If yes, what did you think? If no, which would you like to try?

Cool! Thanks for the review…I’ve often wondered about those Newman cookies. 🙂

  2. Shannon says:

I love Newman’s own, but I had no idea they had wheat free Fig Newman’s. That’s great news for me because I can have my Fig Newman without breaking the wheat free diet. I’ll be looking for those. I’ve never seen them!

    • kilax says:

Here is more info about the wheat-free/dairy-free fig newmans. The package does say “this is not a gluten-free” product on it. Could you still have it? 🙂

  3. Karin says:

This is a weird question but did you eat the oreo? I’m just asking because it isn’t vegan :).
I’ve been dying to try the Newman-Os but yet again something that we don’t have over here.

    • kilax says:

I did eat one. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the oreos here are vegan. Here is the ingredient list. Am I missing something? Please point out to me if I am? Are they not vegan there? I know it some places they still use whey.

  4. Kim H says:

Haha, I love all the pictures! What a great way to test all the cookies. I haven’t tried those. I tend to either bake cookies at home or get whatever they have at Trader Joe’s.

  5. Karla says:

    Cookies!!!
I tried some of the ginger o’s once! They are amazing!! These Hermits look exciting!

  6. no i have not tried but they look so good i think i may have to! your pics are so cute-love it!

  7. claire says:

The original Newman Os look the most tempting to me. Not sure our grocery store sells them… they are notorious for having very limited selections around here.

  8. Yum, yum, yum! I haven’t tried any of the Newman’s cookie products but now really want to. I’ve heard good things in general plus I like that it supports a fantastic cause. 😀

  9. Sammi says:

First, I love the new header picture!
I’ve tried the Fig Newman’s and they’re delicious! This was my thought process throughout my thinking through my answer to your question: “Definitely the Newman-os! But the alphabet ones sound REALLY good for ice cream… Crap! I forgot about the Hermits!! Those sound amazing!!” So, I don’t think you’re going to get an answer out of me other than, “all of them!” 🙂 I love chewy cookies, so I’m really glad that I learned that about the Hermits! That’s one thing I always worry about when buying cookies (and eventually deciding to just not get any at all).

  10. I’ve never tried any of those cookies but after this review, I definitely want to! They look mouthwatering and delicious.. yum.

  11. Julia says:

Those Newman-Os are soo yummy! I have very little self-control, so I avoid buying them…otherwise I would prob. eat about 20 at a time. Oops

    • kilax says:

It is hard not to eat too many, that’s for sure! I was happy to share them with my sister!

  12. eatmovelove says:

So jealous!!! I did a giveaway for Newman’s on my site before – they couldn’t send me any though because I’m in Canada…booo :(….I LOVE cookies so yeah – that would be up my alley ….anything soft and chewy…and chocolate…oh and ginger’s good too…great review!!

  13. Christina says:

I like the review and the pictures! Will thinks he looks homeless (which he does 90% of the time anyways) and I think I look gross, but we are happy to be a part of this post regardless! 🙂 Love you!

  14. cher says:

Love these cookies. the oreo type ones that are Newman’s, I thought, tasted great. maybe a little “grainey-er” than the real thing, but not in a bad way. love these!

  15. Leah says:

I havent tried ANY of these but they all look good to me! I think the hermits are the ones that look the best though.

  16. Tiffany says:

The chocolate Newman-Os are tasty but definitely rich, and because I was never a milk-and-cookies person, I’ve always done well to not eat too many of this type of cookie. 🙂 Totally would try the other vegan varieties and I’m particularly intrigued by the Hermits.

  17. Ameena says:

I have never tried Newman’s Cookies…if they could just make a gluten-free version I would love to give them a shot!! These look delicious.

    Have a great Sunday!

  18. Holly says:

I have never tried any Newman’s Own products…but I really want to! I know I would love the “Oreos.” And the Hermits – I love all soft baked goods.

  19. Ren says:

Make your own double-stufs — that’s what we used to do with regular Oreos (and gave the extra cookies to my mom, who doesn’t actually like the creme as much).

It bugs me a bit that Newman-O’s has an apostrophe.

    • kilax says:

The apostrophe make me absolutely crazy too.

I like to take double oreos and make them into a quadruple stuffed one!
