What do you think the secret ingredient is?

Secret Ingredient Cookies

Can you tell from this photo? Probably not…

Secret Ingredient Cookies

I can’t keep it a secret any longer…

Secret Ingredient Cookies

It’s potato chips! Ha ha. Steven and I saw a special on Unwrapped about potato chip cookies in November or December and have kind of been wanting to try them. My grandma had a recipe, so we got to work!

Ingredients:

  • 1 c. margarine
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 2 eggs or 2 tbsp. flaxseed with 6 tbsp. water
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 c. coarsely crushed potato chips
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 package (6 oz.) butterscotch chips or 1/2 c. peanut butter

Directions:

  1. Cream together margarine and sugars. Add eggs or flaxseed mix and vanilla and beat well. Add crushed potato chips and butterscotch chips or peanut butter. Sift flour and soda together. Stir in creamed mixture.
  2. Drop by teaspoon on greased cookie sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes at 375ยฐ F.

Muchos simple, no?

Grandma and Kim making Secret Ingredient Cookies

We made one half of the batch without butterscotch chips or peanut butter, and I do not recommend that – they are not sweet enough. We all really liked the peanut butter ones.

The potato chips only leave a slight crunch in the cookie, so it’s hard to distinguish they are in there! The most fun is telling people these are “Secret Ingredient Cookies” and trying to get them to guess what the secret ingredient is.

These are fun cookies. Definitely not my new favorite or anything, but fun.

What is the strangest thing you have ever baked?

  1. Yum! The strangest thing I ever baked…you know, I don’t know! I’d like to make those blackbean brownies, but I haven’t gotten a chance.

My mom used to make secret ingredient things. Usually the ingredient was mayo or coca cola or back then, zucchini. My strangest thing would have to be when I made my own sausage. Gross. I don’t recommend it.

i would never have guessed!!!!! i thought PB, but of course that’s not “secret” but i was kinda on the right track, lol. i love finding fun things like that to do on food network!!!! my dad saw the mac n cheese throwdown and totally made the 7-cheese mac n cheese later that week. lol.

i made a banana liqueur banana pudding one time. it was INTERESTING to say the least. sort of like a jello shot. that stuff is STRONG (99 bananas is like 99 proof).

I thought you were going to say that the secret ingredient was LOVE. haha! I’m not sure what the strangest thing I’ve ever baked was…I made pink lemonade cupcakes that were a total clop, however!

  5. Michal says:

Wow i never would have thought! Neat ๐Ÿ™‚

Hmm… now that you ask that, I don’t think I’ve ever been all that adventurous when it comes to baking. I’ve seen the recipes for black bean brownies but I don’t like brownies to begin with so that’s kind of out of the picture. There are some margarita cupcakes that I’ve been waiting for a special occasion to try though ๐Ÿ˜›

  7. haha that’s really original; and I love that show!

  8. diane says:

Tee hee! Heather makes those too. She also makes a cornflake cookie with butterscotch chips that is soooooo good!

  9. Ameena says:

What a cute idea! The strangest thing I have ever baked was chick pea cookies from Deceptively Delicious (Jessica Seinfeld). Her book is supposed to get kids to eat more vegetables and fruits, but this was just too gross!

  10. Nat says:

You know in college the secret ingredients was umm…. more herbal. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. Stef says:

NICE! never would have guessed that. when i was younger i used to eat this dish with beef and potatoes, and potato chips! the chips would get a little bit soggy from the sauce, and it was pretty amazing. sounds gross though. i should recreate it veg style. such a cute pic of you and…your grandma? love it!

  12. I made cookies with potato chips in them once, too… I was totally grossed out by the idea, but it sounded like something my brother would love, and of course I was right about that. ;p

My mom had this weird recipe for “Wacky Cake” with no eggs and white vinegar. I like sneaking veggies into things – the coolest thing I made recently was vegan muffins with spinach in them – they were awesome. I also am experimenting with cashew mayo, my first attempt tasted really good but the texture was more like cream cheese (which isn’t bad either).

  14. Wow, you are so brave! haha…I was thinking the secret ingredient was peanut butter by the color of it. *Never* would have guessed potato chips! ๐Ÿ˜€

  15. That is the most awesome thing! I love the idea of cookies with chips. That’s like the perfect PMS food, sweet and salty! ๐Ÿ˜€ There used to be a store in my hometown that sold chocolate covered chips and popcorn. So tasty. ๐Ÿ˜€

  16. Mica says:

Haha, at first, I saw the corner of the PB jar and thought, “Duh, Kim. The ‘secret ingredient’ is peanut butter!!!” Then I felt foolish.

I’ve heard of these mythical cookies, and I’m pleased to find that they are not very complicated. I’m really excited to make them!!

  17. Karla says:

I’ve made cookies with potato chips! I didn’t like them though ๐Ÿ™ They wounded interesting but sadly mine turned out WAY too greasy!
Love the picture with your grandma!

  18. Sammi says:

I definitely wasn’t expecting that! Those look awesome though!
Zucchini muffins for me I guess, which really aren’t that strange! They weren’t good, if that helps! ๐Ÿ™‚ I think they had carrots or something in them too, I can’t remember!

  19. Caroline says:

Cool, I would have never guessed! I like that, very original, they look yummy!

  20. Linzi says:

Wow! Those sound so interesting!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I can’t think of anything super strange right now that I have cooked – I try to play it safe. So I admire your adventurous attitude in the kitchen!

  21. Those sound really good! Unfortunately we don’t have any potato chips so I can’t try them right now.

We made cookies this weekend with fritos, pretzels and chocolate chips. The crunch feels so good when you eat them and they don’t really taste strange at all.

  22. i love this – potato chips in cookies!!! yes!

  23. Felicia says:

YUM! I think I will need to try this ๐Ÿ™‚
