Blogger Identity Crisis / Such a Pretty Fat Giveaway

By , January 11, 2010 5:06 am

I feel like I am having a bit of a blogger identity crisis.

I am passionate about what I am writing, and I really enjoy writing, receiving comments and interacting with all of you. It’s so fun. And I like the style I’ve developed and the blogging schedule I am following.

But… I have this itching feeling that I could be more personal here. I just worry about doing that without comprising my “in real life” relationships.

I suppose most bloggers struggle with this.

Have you ever felt like you were having a blogger identity crisis?

Maybe I will work on a “FAQ” page or update my About page in the meantime. Do you have any questions for me? Is there anything you would like to know about me? Me, me, me, me, me. It felt weird asking you guys that. But I have always wondered!

I have a non-traditional giveaway for you. It is more of a “pay it forward” giveaway, but I didn’t just want to say “whoever comments first gets it!” So I will do a traditional giveaway and draw a name.

Have you heard of the book Such a Pretty Fat by Jen Lancaster? The book is about Lancaster’s weight loss journey (warning: if you have/had an eating disorder, this book may be triggering). She tells her story with a sense of humor and does not apologize for who she is. And bonus! The story is set in Chicago. Leah wrote about the book a few weeks ago, saying how much it made her laugh, and I thought, “Jeez, instead of letting this book sit on my shelf never to be read again, I should pass it on!”

So, I decided to. Let me know if you like this idea, because I used to have a book purchasing problem and could probably find a few more to pass on!

If you are interesting in having my meticulously well taken care of copy of Such a Pretty Fat, you’ll be excited to find out there are three entry possibilities! And, I decided to throw in some LastLine bookmarks for fun!

Contest Rules:

  1. To enter the contest, simply leave a comment below recommending a fiction or non-fiction book to me.
  2. To get an extra entry, link to the giveaway in your blog, and leave me another comment linking to your post.
  3. And for the bonus extra entry, related to the first half of this post, leave me another comment below telling me something you like or dislike about this blog. Example? I dislike how RIDICULOUSLY long my posts have been lately. (And while I do write for me, but would love some feedback.)
  4. This contest is open until 5:00 PM CST on Sunday, January 17th. I will probably use the old “name out of a hat” drawing to select a winner on Sunday evening. I will announce the winner on Monday, January 18th.
  5. This contest is open to readers everywhere.

I love to read- with the semester starting again I am back to school books only but during the summer I ravage books! If I could suggest any books it would be anything by Jodi Picoult (although 19 minutes and change of heart were my fav) and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Actually I could sit here and list 928 more books but that would be like hi-jacking your blog!

If you want honesty, I don’t think your posts are too long, but they could be broken up to be more easy on the eyes you know. Maybe some list format or colors??

I will link this some point this week.

Thanks for your honest feedback and book recommendations. Do you think it helps when I break things up with lines and bold sections? What are your ideas for what could be a list/bulleted? And what were you thinking for colors?

  2. Teamarcia says:

I’d love to read that book! I think she started out as a blogger so there’s hope for all of us! ; )
The non-fiction I’m reading now is Brain Training for Runners
Lovely Bones was good as a fiction, although it’s been awhile since I’ve read any fiction.

I love your blog as it is. I think you’re very insightful. If I had to say something critical, maybe add a little color for fun.

You make me curious about that book, especially your comment that it could be triggering for people with an eating disorder….
I am an avid reader so there are many books I would love to recommend to you – I am going to give you my top five non-fiction books – these are books I consult time and time again:
    1. Women’s Bodies Women’s Wisdom – Northrup
    2. The Four Agreements—Ruiz
    3. A Return to Love – Williamson
    4. Eastern Body Western Mind – Judith
    5. The Seekers Guide – Lesser

  6. Oh gosh, I love your blog as it is!! You have the most insightful posts, and I always enjoy reading them. 😀

I actually have this book sitting in my bookshelf, waiting to be read, so I’ll pass on the giveaway so that someone else can receive it. Now that I know you enjoyed it so much, I think I should get started on reading it too. 😀
    .-= Author’s last blog post… It’s just not right! =-.

  7. Shannon says:

That’s a tough one because I really love your blog as it is. Like a couple people said, I would try to add more color. But that being said, if someone recommended that to me, I woul dhave no idea how to do it!! I think you write an excellent and insightful blog. I’m really glad I found it!

  8. Erin says:

I’ve had this book on my to-read list for a while now! 😀

I’m a huge reader! Would definitely recommend anything by Bill Bryson, who writes the world’s funniest travel books. I’m reading The Art of Eating by MFK Fisher right now and so in love with the way she writes about food.
    .-= Author’s last blog post… For love of pumpkin #4 =-.

  9. I love your blog! It’s nice to read one that isn’t solely focused on food (which most of the ones that I follow– and my own!– are.).

I would love to read that book! I’d love to get some sort of blogger book trade thing going on– I have SO many books (English teacher, duh), and it makes me a little sad that they just sit around after I’ve read them.

Book recommendations…hmmmm…here are a few that I’ve enjoyed in the last couple of months:

Fiction: Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro
Non-Fiction: Truth and Beauty, Ann Patchett
    .-= Author’s last blog post… Sunday Supper =-.

    Thank you 🙂

I think a book trade is a great idea too. Goodies Galore and I exchaged books (her’s is the one I am going to pass on to you). We should set something up!

    Thank you for the recommendations!

  10. SoMi's Nilsa says:

I love this idea of paying it forward. I’m almost halfway through The Help. It’s fictional, but if you have any interest in race relations, particularly in the South, then you should definitely pick it up. I have really enjoyed reading it so far.

  11. Mica says:

Blogger identity crisis–I think I’m going through one too. Though maybe, I’m just going through a misanthropic stint wherein I don’t like reading most blogs, hahaha.

Let’s see. Book recommendations? I liked “Devil in the White City” which *I think* is technically non-fiction but reads like fiction. (Bonus: it’s also set in Chicago) That’s about the last “fun” book I’ve read in awhile. Fiction? Hm..Harry Potter?

I like that your blog is really honest and that your posts are always really thought out. You don’t just (ahem) post 3849028403 pictures of your sandwich and call it a day.
.-= Author’s last blog post… Frenchie friend is here! =-.

  12. I actually already have the book (Bella from Bella on the Beach sent it to me for Christmast) and I just started it last night. It is seriously laugh out loud sort of funny! The fiance kept asking me what was so funny and I knew he wouldnt get it 🙂 I love her sense of humor!

As for keeping things personal/private, I sometimes have a very hard time with the things I write on my blog. I’ve decided should I ever become rich and famous (you know, because that happens EVERYDAY lol) I will edit the posts where I’ve vented about family members or friends so that I wont upset anyone 🙂

I like your blog the way it is. I don’t feel like it has to be confessional and about people in your life for us to feel like we get to know you. Your blog has a very positive tone, and it can be funny and though-provoking, too. I like the posts on health, social and blogging issues, events (like cookie baking), pics of Data, and especially the Friday question!

I don’t usually read the vegan recipe posts because I’m not vegan, and I tend to skim the training logs but I think those really are for you to keep you accountable. If there was anything I would like to hear more about it would actually be life in Chicago, because it’s a great town and so different from where I live.

I have been thinking about posing the same type of question on my blog, too.
    .-= Author’s last blog post… I Feel Good!!!! … and Then Bad 🙁 =-.

  14. ChezJulie says:

Oh, but I agree with the others… actually I think the dark grey background is a little bit hard for reading. If it could be made lighter that would be cool!
    .-= Author’s last blog post… I Feel Good!!!! … and Then Bad 🙁 =-.

  15. Kristie says:

I love The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards. What a sweet giveaway/pay it forward idea!

I’m one of those weirdos that rarely thinks blog posts are too long (the only thing that really bothers me are posts with tens of photos which is not really your problem :)), but in things I like, I really like the variety of your posts – the questions, the article reviews/discussions, the workout details, the food. I almost always read about something I want to comment on – which isn’t always the case on other blogs where I feel like I’m reaching for straws if I feel like I should comment.

  16. Liz says:

Oh I’ve been wanting to read this book! I’m currently reading Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol. I still have about 150 pages to go but I would recommend anything by Dan Brown.

I don’t think I’ve been reading long enough to offer any helpful blog advice, but I will say that I have a blogging identity crisis probably about once a year. I really want to change blog names again but am resisting the urge.

  17. RunningLaur says:

I agree that having a more personal blog is something that I’d like to do, but it’s a very dangerous line – particularly when working in a professional field. Once it’s out there it’s out there for good, but I can say that some of my favorite posts have been my most personal ones. My advice is to include more personal info if you wish, but you may wish to sit on these posts a little longer to reflect before hitting publish – which is easier since you pre-write many!

I’m with Mica as well, I truly appreciate that your blog is much more than just a billion photos of the food you ate and how wonderful you are. I enjoy that your posts are often thought provoking and well thought out on your part. (and they aren’t too long, esp since my comments to you always seem soooo long.) Oh, and I advise against color. Mainly bc I read the posts initially in a reader in which light color test is difficult to read, but would show better on your blog. It can make the posts really hard to read.

As for books, I really enjoyed:
“The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair (I found an ‘uncensored’ version that was longer and nice),
“Fed Up! Winning the War Against Childhood Obesity” was a non-fiction book which was a little scholarly/repetitive, but you can’t beat the level of information in it.
Any of Dean Karnazes book are quick quick reads that will make you want to run immediately.

  18. Christina says:

I am always up for a good book.

I have been a reading junkie lately, the book I am currently reading has me so engrossed. It is called the Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. So of my other recent favs, Julia Child’s my life in France, Shopgirl by Steve Martin, The Friday night Knitting club by Elizabeth Nobel
    .-= Author’s last blog post… Staying safe =-.

  19. I am not sure how much exploring you have done around my blog, but most of my blog entries are rather personal. Some are very personal. However, due to what I have chosen to discuss in my blog, it seems appropriate to me. When I first started blogging I told my family and friends what I would be blogging about. I did not ask them to read it, just let them know I was doing it, what kinds of things I would be discussing, and what my purpose was for doing the blog. My friends and family are on facebook with me and twitter. When I complete my blog for the day, I always post the link in both places. Again, not asking them to read it, just posting it. That way they can decide if they want to look at it or not. My brother reads my blog and has no problem when I bring him or his wife up in it. My mother read my blog for the first time the other day. However, I think she did it more so she could see the pictures my daughter takes than for anything else. Because of what my blog is about she already knows that there will be things in it that will cause her pain. So she chooses not to read it most of the time. Some of my friends read it, others do not. I think because I was up front about what I would be blogging about, and did not ask or demand anyone to read it, those people who I have relationships with who choose to read it do not allow what I blog about to affect our relationships. They know I am just blogging the truth as it is seen from my point of view.

With all that being said. I do like your blog the way it is. The truth is though, it is your blog and if you feel that you need to be more personal in it than you should. If it is something you want to try but are not completely comfortable with it, maybe give it a try like once a week or so and see how it makes you feel and what kind of responses you get.

I have been struggling a bit to find my voice and keep a balance between my personal life when blogging. I know my blog is very focused on the things I do and the way I feel, but I try not to involve too much emotion or others in a way that would compramise any relationship. I feel as though if it’s just about me I am in control and will let you know what I want to. I think it’s okay to be personal as it gives your readers more. But I don’t think it takes away if you aren’t documenting your every moment. Your voice is revealed through your writing. And I think is what brings people back. Great question!!

  22. Hello
Thank you for the nice comment on my blog recently. I really appreciate new opinions and things. I have actually read some of your posts before, and thought they were interesting…I was intimidated to comment since you have quite a # of followers 🙂 …and also u are highly athletic….i used to treasure it muchly…and unfortunately for the last year and ongoing it is not a possibility for me…its difficult to me “comfortable” with not comparing to others…but a work in progress.
I love new comments, so thanks for dropping by…keep doing so if you ever wish. Your blog is quite lovely.

Books are my best friend!! I’d love to read this.

I definitely recommend the entire world read Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. I am so inspired by him!
I also highly recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. VERY well-written novel!

  24. I like your style of blogging.. there are times that I wonder more about you but I can understand that different people share different levels about their personal life. When I originally started blogging which is not long ago.. I followed the same format as some other bloggers and after a week or so felt like it was way too much. No one needs to know ever single thing that I eat, see or experience. That’s how I settled on just sharing a photo of my dinner and sometimes other good eats that I have.

What I like to know about you are; why did you start the blog? why did you become a vegetarian and then a vegan? Are you the only one in your familiy who is a vegan? If I think of any other I will ask you 🙂

I love Emily Giffin as an author.. I can read her books in a day… partially because i can relate to the location of the stories so well 🙂

  25. kaylen says:

For my Bonus Entry: I like that your running logs are all on one post and not posted daily, as some runners do. I get bored of daily updates on the same topic.

I have a blogger identity crisis all the time. I feel like my blog is about “recovery from anorexia,” but that is definitely not all of who I am. I’m passionate about my husband, cats, writing, reading, movies. I have lots of political opinions. I have so many thoughts about relationships with family and friends. Don’t even get me started about work! I keep a personal journal for all this stuff. I do feel some pressure to tailor my blog, though I’m not exactly sure why. It really is your space. I’m interested in the variety of your posts. I like seeing what you’re up to training-wise and eating-wise, but I’m just as intrigued by your Friday questions and general life thoughts. I say share whatever you want to share! I worried for a long time about including stuff about my husband or my family, but I think I’m respectful. They all know about my blog. I worry about acquaintances finding it by searching for me by name, but I don’t really think there’s anything to be ashamed of. It’s kind of relief to make more of ourselves known, in my opinion.
.-= Author’s last blog post… Light bulb moment #1: The way we were =-.

  27. I think your blog is lovely as it is. Don’t feel pressured to reveal more than you’re ready to. It’s your blog, write what you feel comfortable with and when you feel comfortable writing it. Keep up the great work 🙂

  28. Holly says:

I hate your blog. 😉 Okay, no, really – there are things I LOVE about your blog, and they are your variety of topics, the questions you ask, and of course your sense of humor. Honestly I’ve not noticed your posts being too lengthy, but that could be because I’m interested in what you have to say. I know EXACTLY what you mean, though, about revealing too much. I shudder to think what would happen if some of my co-workers found my blog. They probably think I like my job – ha!

I struggle with my blogging identity since I can’t run now, and that’s a HUGE reason why I started blogging in the first place. I know my posts are random, but….I AM random.

Hmmm….I love FAQs! Some questions: If you could go back and re-do things in your past would you or would you not? What’s the one material thing you can’t live without? Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years? (So common, but I love hearing the answer to that!) If you had a personal mantra, what would it be?

I need to read more, so I don’t have great book suggestions. I did love “My Sister’s Keeper” (VERY different from the movie), although it is very sad. I also like “The Secret” (though some parts I disagreed with). I need to read more!

Ooh, I love asking questions! (Consider it an occupational hazard. :)) What’s your favorite thing about living/working in the Chicagoland area? Your least favorite thing? Also, did you grow up around here?

As for books, I personally love The Shadow of the Wind. It’s the best book I’ve read in the past five years, hands down.

  30. I love the Pay it Forward book ideas…I did that with My Sister’s Keeper, and we put our blog names and states in the cover so as it traveled around there would be a record…so I would like to read your book.

Only one of my ‘real’ friends even knows about this blog and she doesn’t read it because it is separate from my friends…(she doesn’t want to invade that space), but I really like the personal stuff!

  31. Leah says:

Well, you know I dont need a copy, but I just wanted to tell you this is a GREAT idea!

Great giveaway idea! Don’t enter me because I have a stack of books to get through still and I’m sure someone else could more immediately enjoy the book. Then next week classes start and I just won’t have as much time for free reading. That book sounds really fun, though! Right now I’m reading John Updike’s “The Witches of Eastwick” and next I am doing “The Widows of Eastwick.” I don’t care about the subject matter but the writing is amazing and unlike anything I’ve read before. Some of the lines stuck in my head for days.

What’s your nationality? (Have I asked you that before – you just have an interesting last name!)

  35. kapgar says:

I think the idea of giving away gently-read books is pretty cool. If you watch Battlestar Galactica, Adama gives a book to President Roslin and she says she’ll give it back. He then tells her that books are meant to be shared and he doesn’t want her to give it back. That really changed my viewpoint being the book hoarder I was. So, yes, I like the idea.

  36. Lacey says:

first of all i LOVE the idea of a pay it forward giveaway. i should do the same with books. sometimes i just want to keep them but then i realize i might never reead it again and someone else def would!

  37. Lacey says:

what i like about the blog is your topic selection. you always talk about things i really want to think about, and i might be a broken record for already having told you that 🙂 but you talk about your subjects with an honesty and openness that really encourages comments of the same kind. i also LOVE how you respond with emails, it makes me feel like my connection with you and your blog is that much more personal which is really hard to do in a short amoutn of time online!!!! i have been reading/a readee of several blogs for almost a year and we don’t “know” each other quite so well just simply because we limit our interactions to comments left for each other rather than interactive convos.

There is nothing I dislike about your blog! I love not only your topics but how kind and generous you are with your comments on my blog. So nice of you to ask if I was a model! I wish!!

Gosh, Kim, you really hit a nerve with this post… I got so caught up in reading everyone’s comments, that it took me 15 minutes and now I’m going back to: (1) see what you originally asked, and (2) the details of your giveaway. LOL

Okay, here goes, in no particular order – some to answer your question(s) and some to make my observations, somewhat related to your giveaway?? I’m feeling a little ADHD at the moment – it may be the pain killer for my back tonight – yikes! Forgive me in advance, Kim!

Let’s see, an observation from reading comments: many readers, many likes/dislikes…What’s the expression: You can’t please them all… ? I personally like the darker background which is easier on my old eyes. 🙂

LOVE the idea of paying it forward, but you already know that about me! I also like the book exchange idea.

Entry #1 Book recommendation: I recently began reading The Zen and the Art of Running: The Path to Making Peace With Your Pace (Larry Shapiro). As a turtle runner, the title caught my attention. The layout makes it an easy read – small chunks of info, insight, and understanding. Some of it seems a bit redundant. I’d give it 3 stars out of 5 so far (about 1/2 way through).

I just received two others from Amazon that I’m excited to get into:
    – The Total Money Makeover (Dave Ramsey) – highly recommended by a workmate
    – Give a Little: How Your Small Donations Can Transform Our World (Wendy Smith), a 2009 publication with great reviews… looking forward to getting into this one!

    Entry #3 Likes/Dislikes:

Contrary to a few others, I like the darker background (easier on my eyes, as mentioned).

I most like that you ask insightful questions to get your readers thinking, talking, acting… 🙂

The fact that you guys are in Chi-town just ups your coolness factor in my world..LOL!

I enjoy your pictures that do get posted.. DATA is adorable and la familia is always fun to see … makes the blogger ‘real.’

I like the organization/layout of your wordpress blog… want to eventually move mine over to have more options.

Dislikes? I’m sorry, Kim… I know feedback is helpful, but for the life of me, I can’t think of anything I don’t like or would suggest for changes…. I DO like pics, so maybe just that – more pictures??

I’m not a very impressive member if I can’t remember the name of a book. O.K. I looked it up we read it in Oct., Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult, it was fun to read i enjoyed it. Now for the extra bonus entry, my comment about your blog. I’m such a child, I enjoy your pictures, my favorite pictures are of your family. They make me smile. I love that family!

I think you have a great blogging style! No only do you blog often, but your blogs are always thought provoking and entertaining. I’m never disappointed when come here. I understand the dilemma though, I feel like I’m having my own blogger identity crisis. When I started I just wanted to have a snarky blog about entertainment, media and the internet, but then my life changed drastically and so did my priorities. I’ve even considered changing the name of my blog because I’m not sure it reflects its current tone. I’m not as sarcastic as I used to be. But then I remember to not take it so seriously and embrace the writing that I do and not judge myself so much.

One goal I have for my blog is the talk about my childhood more, because I always love reading other people’s blogs on that topic. I think you can really get to know someone by learn about their past. I’d love to hear more about yours.

Speaking of childhoods, I forgot to say that banner picture you have of your family is very cool! Are you the curly blond sitting in your mom’s lap?
