What’s your blogging style?

By , January 4, 2010 5:19 am

Ha. I had two posts written for today. The first one was a rant on some article I read yesterday and it made me sound crazy. I decided not to use that one and wrote another semi-rant that made me sound bitchy.

Pause.

I must have been in a weird mood yesterday morning. I decided to table those for another day when I have more time to think and am not writing in the “heat of the moment.”

Do you write your posts ahead of time? Or are you more likely to write and immediately hit “publish”? What’s your blogging style? When do you blog?

I generally write all of my posts ahead of time (except for the random “spur of the moment” posts) and schedule them to be published in the morning. I even work on my Sunday training recap post throughout the week so I can publish it after my last workout on Sunday.

During the week, I write posts in the morning or evening train ride. Sometimes I write 2 or 3 at a time. Sometimes I just write them the night before. On the weekends, it’s more sporadic.

And I usually DON’T censor myself! But I have a hard enough time communicating as it is, and if I go back and read something and it doesn’t make sense… then it is not ready to publish! We’ll have to see if I ever use those!

We figured out what to do with the leftover Vegan “Meatloaf” – Vegan “Meatloaf” tacos! I kept joking to Steven that we should make them, but he kept saying no. Then he was too sick to argue so I made them and he LOVED them. Ha!

I generally am a mix of both ways. The more thought out posts that are either A- on a particular subject or B- really need time and effort are done over a period of days. And like you, I keep notes on my week in review throughout the week. Over the course of the week I typically have one or two spur of the moment posts. With all that said, trust me, I am constantly thinking about what I want to blog about!

  2. I write ahead AND immediately publish. Although I’m trying to be less hasty in my posting, whenever I go back and read a post where I was short on time I feel it.

Right now I’m lucky if I blog at all. But, to answer your question, if I’m at home, I’ll usually publish right away. If I come up with an idea for a post while, say, at work, I’ll write it up in an e-mail and send it to myself so I can post it from home (thus not getting in trouble on work hours). I guess that kinda constitutes a draft post. There are a few occasions, like my end-of-the-year lists, when I’ll write it up as a draft within my blog editor, so I can just keep working on and refining it.

I need to start putting more thought into posts. I generally write about my day and hit publish. I was so consumed by school last semester, I didn’t have time to put in as much thought as I wanted to. So I am really looking forward to this semester break so I can give my blog more of a direction.

Your first paragraph had me cracking up:) I very rarely write a post ahead of time. I shoud, it makes sense and would ensure more frequent posting but I just never seem to get it done. Most of my posts are done at work when I have some downtime. Maybe that can be a goal for the new year, always have a post ready to be published. Happy New Year!

I usually write it and post it and the posts are frequently about running. However, there are some that I write while at work, email to myself (I can’t hit blogger at work) and then post later. There are also blogs that I write that don’t get posted and those were done in advance. Those done in advance were written on a plane, or are about something that after a weeks past, it hardly seems current or relavant.

  7. Caroline says:

It depends on the amount of time I have in the next couple of days. If I know I’m going to be really busy, sometimes I try to write a couple ahead of time. I find that the posts that I write ahead of time usually come out better…

  8. lol– now I want to read those first two “rant” posts! 🙂

We made vegan meatloaf yesterday, and it turned out pretty good. As soon as we finished, I thought…hmmmm, I wonder what we’ll do with all these leftovers? Now I know– tacos!

I just write and publish, unless I’m traveling, or know that I won’t be able to post for some reason.

I think the two rant posts will make their way here. I will indicate they are the ones I was talking about when I post them. I think one in particular would interest you, because it is about vegetarians.

Where did you get your meatloaf recipe? Did I alreay ask you? Ha. It is probably on your blog! I am a bit behind in reading. 🙂

  9. Hilly says:

The only ones I write ahead of time are Snackie Sunday posts. Other than that, I write totally spur of the moment and churn it then burn it. I SHOULD write it then let it sit before I hit publish now and again but eh, those are my real thoughts at the time.

  10. I write things out and then publish them right away. I think if I waited, I would think about it too much and never publish anything at all!

I am all over the place on posting. I usually have several drafts waiting to tweak and publish, but I do my share of seat of the pants posts as well.

I try to write ahead of time but that usually never works out. I am usually about a day late on everything I write. But very rarely I get in the writing mood and bust out a few posts that can be good for any day. I do like though to write it the night before then re-read in the morning before I post. I usually find something that needs fixing. Oohh and your tacos sound delish!

  13. RunningLaur says:

I generally just write and publish, as I find it hard to pull out time to dedicate just to blog writing – thus why I love 3 things thursday so much. (I can talk myself into just 2 minutes to throw something together and hit ‘done.’)

If there’s a topic that I’ve been thinking about for a bit or weary about publishing, I’ll tend to write it by hand and edit for a bit before I type it up and send it out there. This was really easy to do when I had a desk job too 🙂

  14. I don’t think I have one particular “blogging style”! Generally, if something strikes me in the middle of the day, I’ll quickly type it out — but I don’t completely compile something until that night, when I’ll publish it. And very rarely, when I have a review or something that I’ll want to post all at once, I hold it for a few days / weeks / whatever.

I’m lucky to have anything to blog about lately. But when I do blog I usually just do it mostly spur of the moment, I may wait a day or two after what I’m blogging about happened, but I don’t usually write a post and save it for a later date.

  17. Holly says:

ha! But bitchiness/crazy rants make for good blogging…right?? I probably censor myself TOO much, because I’m so terrified I will offend someone. In person I have that sense of humor that is verrrry sarcastic, but that’s hard to portray in writing without seriously hurting some feelings. 😉 I usually type my posts ahead of time and it just depends on the time of day when I publish. I have Windows Live Writer on my PC at home (LOVE), and so I’ll post in the evenings from that.

That is one great thing about your commute, though…at least you can get some things off your list!
    .-= Author’s last blog post… A Season of Forgiveness =-.

I worry about my sarcastic sense of humor coming off wrong too. Have never picked up on it on your blog!

Oh yeah. I cherish my internet time on the commute. How sad is that?!

  18. SoMi's Nilsa says:

I write all of my posts ahead of time and schedule them to post each morning. I rarely post more than once a day. And usually not on the weekends, either. I try to do one round of light editing on my posts (when I don’t, I regret it) and sometimes, though rarely, that leads me to opt out of publishing that post. I love your style of blogging and I hope you don’t plan on changing any time soon!
    .-= Author’s last blog post… NYE =-.

  19. I usually blog once a day and it’s always at the end of the day. I think I want to up it to twice a day but that can be difficult with my schedule. I usually write, proofread, and then publish. I need to get more into writing my posts ahead of time. It would definitely help out my schedule a bit!

If I see something really interested I’ll throw it into a post for the future … but as a whole I pretty much think of my blog as barf on a keyboard. I type whatever might actually come out of my mouth and then hit publish without ever looking back.

Occasionally I give it a little bit of thought, like when I’m running and something crappy happens … I start cultivating my anger into a blog post as I finish up my run. But by the time I get to the keyboard I forget most of what was in my head and still end up with a random jibber-jabbery kind of post 😉

  24. Kim says:

Generally, I write my posts ahead of time. When I’m at work, I draft them in an email to myself, and then copy it to the blog when I’m home. Sometimes, I have those spur of the moment posts when I just type in blogger. I do censor a bit, in that I don’t just let my thoughts go. I edit and tailor things to the blog. I use my journal for the 100% uncensored stuff 🙂

  25. Leah says:

I dont write anything ahead of time. Mainly due to my lack of internet at home.
I think about what I want to write while Im running, and if I come up with a good idea it immediately goes into my blackberry so I dont forget.
I also hit publish before even proofreading. Ive always been that type, even with important essays in high school. Never proofread anything (so if you notice any glaring mistakes please forgive me). For me, when I reread something Ive written, I’ll change it so much, and so many times that it stops even making any sense, so I try and avoid that!

  26. Kate says:

I very, very, VERY rarely write any posts ahead of time. Truthfully? Since my boss isn’t reading this, most of my posts are composed on the fly while I’m at work. I rationalize by telling myself I’m employed as an editor so blogging is work-related. Whatever gets me through the night, right? 😉

  27. Erin says:

I rarely write posts ahead of time. Sometimes when I’m running I’ll compose them in my head and then I promptly forget them when I sit down to write. Occasionally I’ll write something, leave it, and then come back to it to edit or add photos. But normally I’m a write and publish kind of gal.

  31. I usually do both, but tend to let my food/recipes dictate what the post looks like. Unless I have an idea for a theme in my head. So I guess more spontaneous with some planned posts thrown in there. I’d like to do more planned posts, for days when I just don’t have that much time!

I never write my posts ahead of time, but I probably should. It would keep me from writing all my lame posts where I just report mile splits. (I did formulate the one I just wrote about comments for awhile so I didn’t just write and offend people. I tried to plan being diplomatic.)

I think it’s good that you don’t censor your blog. It’s yours, you do what you want!

Ugh, I don’t know what my blogging style is any more. When I have time? When the mood strikes??
I delete posts a lot b/c I get very self-conscious about being emotional on my blog. But sometimes…like the post I put up yesterday…it feels really good to just put it all out there.
Yeah, mine is a “day in the life” blog I guess but it’s usually all over the place. :p

  38. martymankins says:

I get the idea for a post, quickly start a new one and save it as a draft, with as many notes as I can take down about the post.

Most of my posts take a day or two to complete, mostly due to me getting interrupted (or distracted) on a constant basis. Once I finish the post, I preview it, check for grammar and spelling errors then publish it. These posts like my best of lists and other detailed subjects are the ones that take a couple of days. I do have a few other posts that I eventually will post on, but the idea isn’t something I need to post right away.

Quick posts get posted right away.

I don’t censor, with the exception of very few subject matters that are personal. There are sometimes when I do want to post about such matters, but refrain from to save myself and others from getting upset or offended.

And obviously, my Scooter Sunday and Snowy Sunday videos go through some preparations.
