Vegan “Meatloaf” / Trying New Recipes

By , January 2, 2010 6:34 am

Many of you had “try one new recipe a week” listed as a New Year’s Resolution and I thought that was SO FUN! Although we don’t do it as frequently, Steven and I love trying new recipes. We both subscribe to food blogs and share recipes with each other via google reader. Our favorite website for finding recipes has been VegWeb.com. I bet most of the recipes we’ve tried have come from there!

Where do you look for new recipes? What makes you want to try a new recipe?

I usually want to try a new recipe if it lists some of my favorite ingredients, is accompanied by a beautiful photo, or if it is something I have been craving for awhile!

Our latest adventure, Vegan “Meatloaf,” did feature two of our favorite ingredients (when mixed together) – lentils and rice. Since we had most of the ingredients listed (we had to use soy sauce, red wine vinegar and onion powder in place of Worcestershire sauce and basil and thyme instead of Herbes de Provence) we decided to give it a go.

Hmm.

We both think it needs some work. It was definitely edible and filling. And it had interesting flavor and texture. It just wasn’t quite “there” yet.

Ugh. I guess “Meatloaf” (no matter how perfect the recipe) just isn’t worth two and a half hours of prep/cooking. We had to make our own breadcrumbs,

individually cook the lentils, rice and veggies,

mash them all up and form a “loaf,”

make a sauce for the top,

and bake the damn thing.

So, needless to say, the Vegan “Meatloaf” will probably not make it into our meal rotation, but it may be worked on some more.

It was fun to try something new, that’s for sure!

  1. The meatloaf looks good.. why wouldn’t it make it your meal rotation.. is it very time consuming? or it didn’t taste good?

My recipes usually come from all recipies.com… I modify to make vegetarian or from my head sometimes they are good and sometimes not so much. lol

It was too time consuming. We were thinking if we had the lentils and rice already made, that would help a ton. But we don’t always have 2.5 hours to devote to making/baking dinner.

I always forget about allrecipes. I need to check that site out!

  2. Well, it LOOKS good! 🙂

There’s a recipe for Vegan Meatloaf in one of my vegan cookbooks that I’ve been wanting to try; maybe I’ll make it this week. I’ll have to check out that website, too!

I like the idea of using lentils in the “meatloaf”. I just might be able to get my hubby to appreciate it that way.
Most of my cooking takes 2 1/2 hours because I don’t always read thru the entire recipe before it’s too late.
If it tastes really good, the effort and time is well worth it.
Your photo makes it look so appetizing!

looks good, but yeah, i feel you on the prep time! thats wayyyyy too much time going into dinner!
yeah, i think you’re right on that. She whines all the time that mom mooches off her bf for rides…but she does the same when asked to do something. everytime i ask her to do something/help out, she has her hand out faster than you can blink.

let’s hope she makes the connection soon.
in other news, i’ve never tried meatloaf! nor lentils! i am TOTALLY lost in the food world. =D

I agree with you – even if it didn’t turn out the best it still looks delicious 😀

Yeah – maybe someday we’ll discover an awesome “meat” loaf recipe that doesn’t require more than an hour of time to make. A girl can dream, right? 🙂

  7. I’ve tried veggie meatloaf before but it didn’t quite turn out either 😕
I get recipes from everywhere- blogs, recipezaar, vegweb, cookbooks…

The way I come across new recipes is I’ll get a craving for something I’ve usually had before but don’t know how to make. I always start out by google searching it and then comparing the different recipe links that come up. Sometimes the subtle differences turn into big taste differences in the end, so I can never go with the first one I find, I have to look a half a dozen!

I had a lot of fun figuring out how to make preacher cookies, which I loved from childhood but never knew how to make. They are so easy and sooo addictive! Thank god for the internet yet again!

Love this! Actually, this is to be one of my ‘goals’ for this year – actually try and experiment with more recipes – I have some great cookbooks and YOU guys have great ideas – but I always fall back on something short and simple. Ah, life how you defeat me…:(…cheers!

I like to try new recipes, but I hate when they don’t turn out all that great. I want my food to be TASTY.

  16. Kim, that loaf looks really good! Sorry it was a bust. I only like making new things if there are five ingredients or less. I’m definitely not a cook but I do want to put more effort in the kitchen. It’s just so nice to have left overs. I’ll check out that website you recommended.

  17. well, it certainly looks delicious….i have a recipe for one from “the grit” that uses fake veggie meat that i’ve been pretty happy with.

  18. I try new recipes all the time. It’s one of my favorite things. I snoop around on allrecipes, cooking light (new fave) and even Kraft.com sometimes. Mike just bought me a new cooking light recipe book so I’ve been looking in that recently too. I usually look forward to writing my grocery list so I can search around haha.

I get most of my recipes via bloggers. There are so many foodies out there making wonderful dishes and posting about them … I may never buy a cookbook again! One blogger I adore is Heidi Swanson of 101 Cookbooks (101cookbooks.com). She makes plenty of veg- and vegan-friendly dishes and I have yet to make one that turned out poorly. NomnomNOM!

I typically use allrecipes.com to find recipes. I just bought two new “make ahead” cookbooks, though. I also use my Real Simple magazine (although most of their recipes are on their website as well) mostly for the recipes.
