Energy Zappers
Do you ever read those lists that pop up on yahoo? Such as:
- America’s Prettiest Towns (the town we vacation in in Iowa is on the list!)
- 5 Signs You May Be a Bad Coworker (no comment!)
- 8 Toxic Personalities to Avoid (again, no comment, but I could write an entire post on that one!)
For some reason, those articles really draw me in. I guess their marketing is working on me!
One of the interesting ones I read a while ago was on “energy zappers” – regular habits you make partake in that zap your energy and leave you feeling drained. I thought the list was interesting. I’ll bold the items I think sometimes affect me:
- Being Addicted to E-mail
- Visual Clutter
- Being Bored
- Poor Posture
- Toxic Indoor Air
- Eating Too Much at Once
- Living in Artificial Light
- Listening to Negative Nellies
- Holding a Grudge
You can check out the article for a full description of how these items are draining and ideas for solutions. Do any of these apply to you? I really think being addicted to e-mail (and google reader) and being bored are the big ones for me. Just spending too much time with the computer is draining! I’ve been spending less time online the past few weekends and have felt pretty good Monday morning.

Since my computer died and I have to rely on my daughters when she isn’t using it I have been on the computer a lot less. I check email once or twice a day and it is so freeing. And really none of my email is so important that I need to respond right away like I normally try to. Interesting! (and I love those articles too!)
There was one just yesterday about the healthiest states. I immediately texted the Hubby to tell him we should move to Vermont (#1 on the list) and Mississippi (#50) was completely out of the question. Of course, my own state is #11, so we have nothing to be ashamed of!
Um, yeah, so I have a list addiction. 🙂
Being addicted to email, poor posture (at least at work) and artificial light are definitely the energy zappers that get me.

I suffer from many of those “energy zappers”- I swear I can’t seem to go more than an hour without checking my email. I hate that about myself. And visual clutter gives me the shakes. The air in our office seems stifling. It helps to get outside even for 15 mins.

Yeah….I definitely need to work on a lot of those. I waste so much time at the computer. It’s really amazing how much more I’d get done on school work without the Internet.

I am a supreme grudge holder. And email checker. And have a negative Nelson that I sleep with—no wonder I am so tired!!!

Being bored is a HUGE energy drainer for me. Also, just sitting actually makes me more tired than anything. So, combine being bored with just sitting around and it’s all I can do to drag myself to work in the morning.

Not only is checking email/blogs draining, it can be quite the time consumer! How often do I spend an hour reading blogs?? Think of what else I could be doing! But I like reading about everyone…and I have too many people who I like to keep up with. I’ve tried cutting back on blogs I read…but I can’t decide who to keep and who to remove from google reader!

I think I may be addicted to Google reader…maybe there is an online addiction help-group that has an RSS feed I can subscribe to…
haha, i suffer from almost all of those!! i do pretty much unplug on the weekends, though. well, except from the tv 😀

MSN has similar articles that I get sucked into. Those are energy zappers in and of it self. I think an energy zapper of mine is visual overload. NYC wears me out just by looking at it hehe.
Ha, I get sucked into those lists too. Minneapolis keeps popping up as one of the best cities in various categories (safest, smartest, best schools) and I wonder when I’ll finally take it as a sign to move there (my aunt and uncle live there–they’d be thrilled!).
I’m sure I’m both toxic and a bad coworker. C’est la vie. As for the bullets…
* Being Addicted to E-mail – check, but not by choice
* Visual Clutter – shockingly no, not really
* Being Bored – check
* Poor Posture – check
* Toxic Indoor Air – check
* Eating Too Much at Once – check
* Living in Artificial Light – check
* Listening to Negative Nellies – again, not by choice, but I’m surrounded by them
* Holding a Grudge – check
