Marathon Training Week 5
Welcome to week 5 of marathon training! If you click on the activity links after the dates, it will take you to the Garmin connect website for full stats.
Day 29 | Monday, July 13: Cross-train for 30 minutes
For cross-training, I took Data on a walk…
Not convinced? Me either. I think I am going to start working out in the office gym on Mondays. Then I can still relax when I get home, but actually have exercised.
Day 30 | Tuesday, July 14: Run 3 miles
I was so happy to get to run with Erin again. I am really starting to love working out during lunch, and was really frustrated that I couldn’t last week (because of my wrist, I could not get a sports bra on without assistance). We ran three easy miles down past Adler Planetarium and back. I think these may be my first negative splits ever!
Erin ran the Napa-to-Sonoma Half Marathon today, with Holly! I can’t wait to read both of their race recaps. Erin is staying in California all week after the race, and I am a bit sad I won’t get to run with my lunch buddy next week! But I know she will be having a great time, and that makes me feel better.
Distance: 3.01 miles | Time: 27:49 | 1: 9:29 | 2: 9:12 | 3: 9:02 | 4: 00:03
Day 31 | Wednesday, July 15: Rest
Day 32 | Thursday, July 16: Run 6 miles
Six uneventful miles… I think I stopped once for water and once to go poo. I wasn’t really feeling this run. I felt okay (somewhat sore calves), but my mind wasn’t into it.
Distance: 6.00 miles | Time: 58:06 | 1: 9:44 | 2: 9:52 | 3: 9:58 | 4: 9:48 | 5: 9:32 | 6: 9:08 | 7: 00:01
Day 33 | Friday, July 17: Run 3 miles
I ended up running these three miles with my neighbor, Fritz, which was great because my mp3 player was taking a break (I had to wash the armband, it got SO stinky!). He vented a bit about work, and it was nice to listen to someone else and have a distraction from my own thoughts. Does that ever make you feel better? It does for me. It helps me put things into perspective.
Distance: 3.00 miles | Time: 28:43 | 1:9:37 | 2: 9:22 | 3: 9:42 | 00:02
Day 34 | Saturday, July 18: Run 6 miles
I was so happy Saturday wasn’t a pace run! I stayed up too late the night before playing Rock Band, and I felt completely wiped. My legs didn’t warm up until mile 4.
I was hungry the entire time I was running. I usually don’t eat before my morning runs, even if they are “long-ish.” Do you?
Distance: 6.00 miles | Time: 57:44 | 1: 9:58 | 2: 9:51 | 3: 9:47 | 4: 9:47 | 5: 9:20 | 6: 8:58 | 7: 00:02
Day 35 | Sunday, July 19: Run 12 miles
I didn’t get out to run until after 6:00 pm. Ugh. But it was a good, slow, run at the park, in surprisingly cool temps. Steven came with me and read a book while I ran.
Distance: 12.01 | Time: 1:58:11 | 1: 10:09 | 2: 10:05 | 3: 9:57 | 4: 9:55 | 5: 9:50 | 6: 10:09 | 7: 9:48 | 8: 9:55 | 9: 9:37 | 10: 9:37 | 11: 9:34 | 12: 9:27 | 13: 00:02
Week Summary: 30 Miles
The good news about this week? I started my runs out slower. The bad news? That was because my lower legs hurt – shins and calves. They would feel sore for the first few miles of each run then finally warm up. Any advice for me?
Bad news number 2? My bra decided to attack me this week. Check out the scratches on my back:
I wear the Moving Comfort Dori bra. I haven’t had any problems with them before, so I am wondering what is going on. These scratches hurt and BURN when I am taking a shower. Which sports bras (if applicable) do you like?
OMG…your bra attacked! I’m not sure how much support you need, but I SWEAR by these bras at Target:
http://www.target.com/C9-Champion-Seamless-Cami-Bra/dp/B001J69IDO/qid=1248351935/ref=br_1_10/192-4531206-0835606?ie=UTF8&node=370527011&search-alias=&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=target&field-browse=370527011&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=2
Wow, that link was long. They don’t look like much, but they are super comfortable and keep the bouncing under control for my big Bs/small Cs. In fact, I love them so much that I often just throw them on instead of a regular bra on the weekends. You know, when I actually pull it together enough to put on a bra at all. 🙂
You’re doing a great job!
I have no suggestions on the leg pain or the bra situation. The only thing I can share is that since I stopped weight training, I get more pain in my calves than ever before. Weird, huh?
I hope I can be your lunch buddy again some day. *sniffle* 😉
I use the Enell sports bra. http://www.enell.com/index.php I have no complaints, but than again, I’m not training for a marathon.
It’s a bit pricey but very well made.
I use Blister Shield under my bra line. You can use Body Glide too but I find it has a bit of a musky odor and I don’t like to smell it when I use it on my upper body. The more heat/sweat and the more miles, the more this is an issue. No one said it was easy to be a girl, huh?
I’ve tried all kinds of sports bras. I think they’re like Mexican Restaurants, everyone has a strong opinion on what’s good and what’s bad. I like the Champion Powersleek underwire bra. It’s for larger cup sizes, thin so it dries quickly and you don’t get that soggy feeling against your flesh and most importantly, it is the most bounce free sports bra I’ve ever tried. Also, no uniboob! (The sizes run small. though) The only bad thing is it is hard to get on and off. I’m sure some women can master it but I need help. If you go to mysportsbra.com you can try about any bra you want, they have a very liberal return policy.
As for the shins/calves, are your shoes getting too many miles on them (I only get 300 from my Ascics Nimbus)? R U wearing the right kind of shoe? I was plagued with tight calves for several years and went to several doctors trying to find a remedy for them. No one had any answers. But after I lost 10 pounds they stopped hurting. So I guess I know what my problem was.
Anyway, looks like your training is going well. I know you have some miserably hot and humid weather to deal with (I grew up in Northern Indiana) so kudos to you! Good luck as you move forward on this exciting journey!!
OUCH! That SAME thing happened to me! I don’t even wear a sports bra – just a regular one. But I think what happened in my case is that the little hooks became slightly bent out of shape – just enough to give me a good scratching when I went to take it off. The scratches burned and hurt in the shower just like you described and as a matter of fact, I didn’t know I had scratched myself until I took the shower! I think I will need to start washing all my bras inside a lingerie bag inside the washing machine so the hooks can’t get caught or bent out of shape on anything.
Hehe! Data on a leash, I love it. I think you told me about this once before, but I had to see it to believe it. He looks very comfortable too! My kitties would always just glue themselves to the ground every time we tried the leash.
Sounds like your bra gave you a rash, if it hurts and burns while bathing. Heat rashes do this, maybe try putting some talcum powder on your skin before the bra goes on.
Shaina – LOL! I like those bra-free moments in the morning and evening! I have heard some good things about the Champion bras and they are not that expensive; I should give them a try!
diane – That IS weird! Your body misses the training! We need to get together for lunch soon. It’s been WAY too long!
Gina (Mannyed) – Thanks for the link! 🙂
Carol – Thanks a ton for your input! I used the Body Glide today (already had some) and it helped quite a bit. I think I will have to check out that sports bra website link. I have been having issues getting the one on that I use, but I think that is because of my busted up wrist! Ha ha. And… I think you’re right about the shoes. And the losing weight part. I plan to buy new shoes with my birthday money this week 🙂
teeni – Oh my gosh. My hooks ARE bent back on the bra that is bothering me AND I recently have been too lazy to put them in their special washing bags. Ha ha.
Jen512 – It took him a long time not to be slouchy cat! I will have to try the powder. I bet we have some..
