Friday Question #71

image:Tree nutsWhat foods are on your “will not eat” list?

I don’t want to encourage picky eating (says the vegetarian/vegan), but I am curious to find out what foods do not appeal to other people.

Besides not eating meat, dairy and eggs, I also do not eat tree nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts, etc.). They give me severe headaches, so I avoid them altogether. Sometimes even the smell of them is enough to make me sick.

I avoid olives, mushrooms, and seeds, because I do not care for their taste. I will still try dishes that have these foods in them, but I am probably not going to like it if they are the main ingredient!

And brussel sprouts. We tried. We really did. I think this requires another go-around.

Side Note: Why are all of my Friday Questions about FOOD? I had two other questions in mind that were NOT food related. Hmm.

    Fast food. Sauer kraut.

That’s about it. I’ll eat just about anything else.

I hear you on the brussels sprouts. I’d love to love them.

  2. Mica says:

Whoa, that’s interesting about tree nuts. My roommate in college was super allergic to treenuts, especially walnuts. It made me sad that she couldn’t eat Nutella. (Does that give you problems?)

As for my picky eating, I don’t really like the taste of asparagus, and I generally avoid mayonnaise and raw onions.

  3. Holly says:

I hate olives, too! And sauer kraut, too. Yuck! Actually, there aren’t that many foods I don’t like…..

And BTW I did see those brownie pans – my friend actually has one! It totally gets rid of all the “good” brownies. 🙁

  4. Erin says:

I don’t do olives, either. I’ve never liked green olives and I used to like black olives…until I ate them and then came down with a stomach virus later that same day. Something about hoarking up black olives has turned me off of them to this day.

I don’t like anything pickled…except pickles and beets. Baby corns, water chestnuts, hearts of palm, artichoke hearts. They just taste like the can to me.

Actually, I don’t like artichokes much at all. In fact, the only way I’ll eat them is if it’s a spinach artichoke dip that mostly tastes like salt and cheese.

  5. tori says:

I have strange texture issues. Mushrooms are repulsive to me because of this. There are tons of foods I don’t eat because the texture really grosses me out. Overall I am a pretty good eater, minus my one texture issue. Although I won’t eat fish or any type of seafood either.

  6. SoMi's Nilsa says:

I hate brussel sprouts, too! And I also don’t do fast food (Mickey D’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, etc.) nor do I drink red wine (it gives me migraines).

  7. sizzle says:

    Foods I do not like:

    fast food
    green peppers (burp!)
    anchovies/sardines (too fishy)
    liver (ew)
    white chocolate (why bother!?)
grapefruit (I don’t really like tart things)

And now due to my new eating regime I avoid- refined sugar, white flour, and some fruits.

  8. Jamie says:

I will not eat – liver, cucumbers, peppers (heartburn!), and olives. I’m sure there are a few other things I choose not to eat but I can’t remember them now.

  9. Christina says:

I am not a mushroom fan due to texture. I also do not eat fish/sellfish of any kind, I avoid veal and lamb and am not a fan of cooked veggies.

  10. martymankins says:

Mince Meat pie and lima beans are two foods I avoid at all costs. Can’t really think of anything else I don’t like.

What’s funny is that brussel sprouts are my favorite vegetable.

  11. Bethany says:

    Olives
    Mustard
    anything spicy (youch!)

  12. Fish – blech. I can’t eat any of it. I rather not smell it also.

  13. claire says:

Liver. Lamb. Vienna sausages. Coffee. White chocolate (good call, Sizz!). Collared greens. Brussel sprouts. I’m sure there’s more…

And then there’s stuff I will tolerate to degrees or am willing to pick off: mushrooms, onions, garlic…

  14. Jeri says:

Whoa…. what DO you eat??? jk. 🙂 I don’t eat onions, and I hate even picking them off b/c of the smell. Yuck. I used to be insanely picky and wouldn’t eat anything but frozen pizza and ice cream, luckily for me (and my health!) I got over that. 🙂

  15. Alice says:

hmm… i WILL eat anything, but i have a lot of “do not love” items. and usually only in certain contexts. like, i don’t want peppers on my pizza or sandwiches, but i like sweet peppers themselves. i don’t love brussel sprouts or asparagus, but will happily eat both if prepared well 🙂

  16. Julia says:

I do not eat lima beans and I won’t touch beans (black beans, kidney beans, etc.) unless they are in a burrito (like Amy’s) where I can’t taste them much or feel their texture. I do eat chickpeas (I don’t count them). This excludes baked beans and chili (unless it’s bean-less haha) from my diet! Unfortunately it seems that whenever my fiance and I go to his parents house or relatives house there are baked beans…GROSS! Its funny too because he doesn’t like them either. Oh well!

  17. Nat says:

I’ll eat pretty much anything except:
    organ meat
brussel sprouts. (still don’t like them)
and any sort of blue cheese.

  18. Dave2 says:

Meat. Cauliflower. Broccoli. I too am also not a fan of Brussel Sprouts, and am allergic to mushrooms.

  19. Ren says:

I’ll try most food, but there are certainly some tastes I avoid. Sour cream, sauer kraut, brussel sprouts, green olives, anchovies/sardines/fishy-fish, liver…

I also don’t care for beer or wine, though I’m fine with many mixed drinks. Well, mostly if they’re made with Rum or Tequila.

I think it’s interesting that people can categorically throw out “fast food” when there is such a huge variety of it available now, all across the spectrum from completely unhealthy, greasy, fatty, salty fried food to quite healthy food. I usually just assume that people mean traditional burgers & fries or similar when they deride fast food.

For lunch today I had a grilled chicken sandwich, no mayo, with lettuce, tomatoes and pickles on a wheat bun. As my side I had a yogurt parfait with granola. This was at Chick-fil-A and is one of my current favorites for lunch. It’s not cheap though — $7.19 with a medium drink (Diet Coke) and tax. The same thing at McDonald’s is somewhat cheaper, more like $5, but not as good. Swap out the grilled chicken sandwich for a McDouble and the price goes down to $3.

  20. Stacey says:

Um, there’s a LOT I don’t eat. I blame it on my parents. My dad was a very picky eater and my mom had all sorts of spice allergies so I grew up on probably a dozen fairly bland dishes. Now I can’t stomach a lot of foods. My list of stuff I don’t eat includes:

seafood (unless it’s breaded fish sticks)
    tomato sauce
    cabbage
nuts (but I do like creamy peanut butter)
    most varieties of beans
    anything spicy

Those are just the things I can think of off the top of my head. I assure you, there are many others.

  21. E says:

Not saying I’m much a fan either, but – brussel sprouts aren’t *so* bad if you roast them in the oven with liberal helpings of butter and pepper, maybe some garlic… 🙂

  22. Lindsay says:

    Food I don’t eat:

As a vegetarian/vegan myself, I also abstain from the meat/dairy/eggs mixture. However, I’m also allergic to some fruits/vegetables such as carrots, celery, potatoes, and apples. Only when those items are raw. When they’re cooked I’m fine. Oral Allergy Syndrome. Yay me, right? Oh and I’m also allergic to soy milk, which is why I drink Almond Milk. Plus, I think it tastes better. 🙂

But I avoid olives too. And mushroom when they’re whole or well, look like they just came from the ground. If they’re cooked up and cut up small they’re OK, I guess.

  23. kapgar says:

I will see your olives and mushrooms and raise you pickles.

  24. Jen512 says:

I can’t stand anything pickled. Also, mushrooms make me nauseous, even the smell of them cooking makes me want to vomit.

My best friend is deadly allergic to black pigment in food, like black olives. She often avoids pizza places because of the risk of cross contamination.
