Running on E
For your entertainment, here is a blog post I wrote about being sick while I was sick. Yeah… it kind of doesn’t make any sense.
My exhaustion finally caught up with me.
On Thursday I developed a small cough in the afternoon. On Friday, it was deeper, but I felt well enough to go to work. But by lunch time I started to feel weak. I had aches in my legs and couldn’t walk very fast. I left early and the aches spread to my hips and lower back. We had tickets to a comedy club with friends that night and were supposed to meet them for dinner first. Instead, I laid in bed all night, as the aches moved to my chest. Wonderful wife I am. $50 down the drain.
On Saturday, surprisingly, I felt somewhat better. Still weak, but not coughing as much, and not achy. We took Sir Data Lor to the vet, and cleaned the house a bit for friends to come over. I was terrified I would have to cancel our get together* with Kevin, Katie, Diane, E and Tori, but I felt great all day. Until about 9:00 pm, when they probably noticed me continually getting up from playing Wii Trivial Pursuit** to blow my nose, cough, and wash my hands in the bathroom.
On Sunday I felt miserable. I kept getting hot and cold, hot and cold. I would be shivering under the sheets, then they would be wet from me sweating too much. I had to go to Target to pick up a prescription. You know what the pharmacist*** said to me? “You look tired.” You know what it means when people say that toΒ you? “You look like crap.” I DID look like crap. I laid in bed all day.
I thought I may go to work on Monday, but decided not to. It’s a good thing I didn’t. I could barely stand up when I was trying to make myself oatmeal in the morning – I felt too weak and dizzy. I had aches during the day again. Felt too weak to get out of bed most of the time. But the coughing had gone down. Hurrah.
On Tuesday, I think I’ll go into the office. What the hell. Should be fun.
You know what? I have been PISSED OFF this whole time I’ve been sick. I’m angry. This stupid sickness is putting a serious hamper in my exercise plans. Taking four days off is making me crazy. And I don’t feel like I should be sick. I eat well and I exercise. I’m healthy!
I know what you’re thinking, “Um, Kim, maybe it’s because you don’t get enough sleep?” Yeah, that has got to be it. From now on, I am going to recommit to getting 7 hours of sleep a night. I will set a timer for 10:00 or whatever, and when it goes off, I’ll stop what I’m doing, and go to bed, as often as possible. If that doesn’t happen, I am going to start sleeping on the train again.
I’ll do whatever it takes to get healthy.
And yeah, that includes finally going to the doctor. I’m working on that one.
*We had such a wonderful time having everyone over on Saturday night. We rarely get to spend time with friends, so it was a real treat. And I love that blogging has given me so many “real life” friends. I never thought that would happen when I started this blog! And I must say – I have a very real blogger crush on Tori. She’s even more awesome in person.
**I sucked at Wii Trivial Pursuit just as much as the tangible board game. What a surprise! Not!
***My pharmacist is pretty funny. The last time I was there, she was so excited to enter my new government insurance info in the computer because of the “awesome low prices!”
BONUS FOR MAKING IT THIS FAR: Anyone sick of me using asterisks all the time? Muah ha ha! Blame it on diane! I copied her’s! I love it when she adds little tidbits!
I adore asterisks! Positively adore them!!
Ooh, that sounds like NASTY bug, so sorry! You should have punched that pharmacist in the face, what a dumb and unhelpful lady.
Hope you feel better SOON, and I love your idea about the timer for going to bed.
I think I have the same bug! I slept all day yesterday, had no sleep last night and have called in sick again today. Sucks b/c I have a ton of work to get done but the dizzy spells and lack of energy just aren’t good for productivity.
Feel better soon!
Laughing about the asteriks. π E. actually uses footnotes in his e-mails which is probably how I got started!
The flu is going around–a couple of E’s friends had it. You seemed like you were starting to look pretty tired about mid-evening!
No offense, but I bathed myself in antibacterial hand gel and have been hitting the Zicam ever since we left your house!! π (p.s., glad you took some time off to rest!)
Feel better!
i’m sorry that you were sick!!! being sick sucks!!! just take care of yourself!!! i ended up getting mono in high school from not taking care of myself… not sleeping enough, not eating right, and working way too much… now i am forced to take care of myself otherwise it’s about 6 weeks in the bed if i relapse!!! i do hope that you’re feeling better though!!!
so how did sir data’s v-e-t visit go?! was he given a clean bill of health??
i must agree with you about blogging giving you real life friends- that is way awesome!!! and i love your asterisks- it’s like bonus material!!!
=^..^=
I hope you start feeling better sister!!! I really want to see you soon! I have a few things for you that I was going to send but was always too poor to! I love you I miss you!!
Feel better!! xoxoxoxoxxoxoxoxox
It totally sucks to be sick. Feel better soon!
Ummm, I heart Tori, too. She has one of those amazing souls. And I hear you on being crabby about being sick. I’m still fighting off my cold/chest explosion. I haven’t been able to run in 2 weeks. It’s thrown my training off. And yes, yes yes, I get grumpy too. I hope you’re feeling better by now.
That really sounds a lot like the cold I had for over a week. It’s a killer! Hope you can recover quickly- yes, sleep helps.
Your blogger night of fun sounds so great- I can’t wait to meet all of you in July!
asteriks are like deleted scenes on a dvd. love them.
did/do you have the flu? sounds awful! i’m hoping you’re on the mend soon! get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids.
I had such a great time! I am so glad we finally got together. I can’t believe we live so close to each other and that was the first time we hung out!
I did notice that you seemed to start feeling really bad towards the end and I felt sad for you. I had some strange cold-ish type thing the week before. I think that stuff is going around right now, especially with the weather changing so drastically. I know people say it has nothing to do with getting sick but every single time the seasons change my kids end up sick (and then so do I) and I don’t think it is necessarily coincidence!
I’m glad you took some time to rest. I hope you are feeling all the way better very soon! And yes, I know what you mean about needing more sleep. I always get sick more easily when I haven’t been taking care of myself like I should. People think sleep isn’t important but I think it is more important than we realize sometimes.
Doh–when I said you were starting to look tired, I didn’t mean like crap. Ha ha! You looked genuinely TIRED, look you needed to put your head down and go to sleep. π
Dave2 – Then why don’t I ever see you using them? Are you just saying that to be nice? π
Mica – Thanks. I felt bad for the pharmacist, because I think she was just trying to be nice, but I was kinda like, “uh, don’t talk to me…”
Gemfit – It must be an internet bug! Ha ha. Just kidding! Isn’t it absolutely awful?! You lay in bed, thinking about all the things you need to do, WANTING to do them, but your body won’t let you π
diane – OH MY GOSH. E is SUCH A DORK!!! HA HA HA! I love you two. I really do. π I am happy you are sanitizing yourself. I was really worried about getting you, specifically, sick.
CourtneyInControl – I love your positive attitude! It IS like bonus material – like the extra disk on a DVD! Ha ha! Data’s visit went well. He lost a pound since last year, and is in great shape! But… he has wax build-up in his ear then we need to clean. No me gusta. AND…. and… and… sniff sniff… my baby Data has to go under on the 30th to get his “teefs” cleaned! I am going to be so mopey all day π
Christina – I love you and miss you too sister. We may postpone this weekend because Data has to go to the Vet on Monday and I want to spend the weekend with him. Can I just send you money to come out here? π What are you guys doing for Easter?
Christina – Thanks π I already feel so much better today, so I am hopeful!!!
SoMi’s Nilsa – I hope this doesn’t turn into one of those lingering things. That has already happened to me twice this year. And I ran through both of the lingering parts and it SUCKED. Here we go again… I hope YOU feel better soon too π
sizzle – Thanks π Already the sleep is not working π I couldn’t fall asleep last night OR this morning. Does that mean I am getting better? I can’t wait to meet you in July! I will be out of town the 24th-26th. Are you getting in before then? *fingers crossed*
Gina (Mannyed) – I think you are on the same page as Courtney! π I am happy to see you back around here π I think it was a “mild” version of the flu… if that’s possible? I am trying to drink lots of water and get lots of sleep. We’ll see how the week goes. I think it’s going to work. π
tori – Isn’t it crazy how close we live?!!!?? I am so super lucky. And Steven will be taking Data to the vet again on Monday. Too bad I am not going with him (well, I don’t want to be there to drop him off because I will be sad, but I could use it as an excuse to see you!). I think it is the weather change. And I just read in the paper that flu season ends at the end of March. So maybe that’s it. I am one of those people who needs to give their sleep more importance though! I will be now!!!
diane – Oh, ha ha! I wasn’t even thinking of you! You can tell when someone means it like “you look like crap,” and when someone says it because they are concerned. I know you said it because you were concerned π
Yeah, we noticed the snot trips. We felt really bad how late we kept you up. Sorry about that. And about winning in Trivial Pursuit. π
kapgar – Don’t feel bad. I was so happy you guys came. And won Trivial Pursuit by default (the bullshit questions). π
I like asterisks. They make me feel like I am reading a book with footnotes.
I also like smiling faces, too.
martymankins – I like that too – I always read the footnotes in a book!
