There’ll be days like this
Yesterday, I had one of those “why I am doing this?” runs on the treadmill. It’s been such a long time since I’ve had one. The training schedule said I had a 3 mile run, but I wanted to do my Sunday 6-miler a day earlier.
By the 2.5 mile mark, I was feeling exhausted and weak. I needed food. Mentally and physically, I knew I could finish the 6 miles, but I made the mistake of focusing on how weak I felt, and how I was really supposed to do the 6-miler on Sunday, not Saturday. And, I was in some sort of “in-between moods” mood that didn’t feel great. I am usually more excited to get on the treadmill and that fuels me through my run.
So I stopped at 3.5 miles, and felt upset with myself.
Which is ridiculous.
I did the run I was supposed to do. I am still in training. I need to stick with the schedule. But, for some reason, I wanted to push myself further.
This is just all the more reason to make the 6-miler today an awesome one! Update: I ran my 6-miler, and it went well. I remembered the mantra “Run the mile you’re in.” It helps keep me from being daunted by the longer mileage.
Other running news:
- Steven and I are working out some finances, but I think there is a 90% chance we will run the Disney Half Marathon on January 9, 2010!
- Steven ran his first 7-miler yesterday and kicked butt! I am so proud of him. I cannot convey in writing how joyful I am to be able to share my love of running with him.
- We are going to visit Fleet Feet for this first time today for gait analysis and running shoe recommendations. And I am going to get some help picking out a new sports bra! Let me tell you, as the miles add up, you really need a supportive bra. Things start to chafe.
- A Snap Fitness 24/7 has just opened extremely close to our house! Our plans were to buy a bowflex machine for our home, but we may not have space for it. We’re not looking for a gym, but this one is so close, I thought I may look into it. Does anyone have any experience with them?
I had a day JUST LIKE THAT on Saturday! Except, even more inconveniently, it happened to me in a class! I found myself wanting to just stop, right there in the middle of everything. I suddenly didn’t give a crap about the choreography or the fact I was surrounded by enthusiastic people. It was bizarre. I don’t know what to blame it on…except maybe the devil. *hahaha*
In general, I find dreadmill runs are the worst and soul sucking, and if I can avoid them I do. (Might help to have a quick sugar hit about 30 minutes before a run.) The sign of a true runner is one who will dust themselves off after a hard run and get back out there… well done. (On both.)
What kind of training schedule are you on? I cannot imagine running for six miles. I can bike, but not run.
Sarah – Oh gosh! I am lucky that this happened to me in the privacy of my home! It would have been even worse if I was with a group… unless they could keep me going. 😉 Did you keep going? 🙂
Nat – Thanks. The “dreadmill’ (HA HA HA) is getting a bit old. And I have exhausted all of my Sex and the Ciy DVDs. Meh. Warm weather please come soon!
Etta – I am training for a half marathon (13.1 miles) so my mileage builds up over the next two months until my race on May 2. 🙂 Next week is 7, the week after is 8, then 6… so on and so forth. Biking is fun too! Do you go outside or use the recumbent?
I don’t even drive as far as you run. My wasband was a runner when he was young. Every weekend he was in some kind of road race. Well, I have to give you credit for taking care of yourself and getting good exercise. When I ask myself why am I doing something I just stop doing it. That’s my problem. I always have trouble finishing stuff.
Treadmills are good for runs that are no more than 3-5 miles. I about died when I had to run 8 miles on a treadmill. I have my fingers crossed weather is decent this coming weekend for my 9.5 mile training run! At least this time, I’ll be running with a friend!
How did your Fleet Feet experience turn out. I bought shoes from them twice and hated both pairs. I know A LOT of people who have great successes buying shoes there – hope you did, too. Me? I now just stick to New Balance because I know they do my body good.
joanharvest – It’s so easy to quit. It’s usually all mental. It’s a challenge, isn’t it?
SoMi’s Nilsa – It isn’t as fun as running outdoors, but I am going to stick with it until we have nice Spring weather. Hee hee hee. Good thing I have all 6 seasons of Sex and the City! My experience at Fleet Feet was very good and I got a pair of Brooks. I ran with them tonight and they felt pretty good – for now. My Asics were fine before. It was Steven who had bad shoe problems, and I decided to get a pair as well. I hope the Brooks work as well as the Asics.
