Since when does someone other than ME know what’s best for ME?

By , February 5, 2009 5:37 pm

It felt good today, to meet a friend in a similar profession for lunch, and tell her exactly what I do in my new job, and how much I like it. I told her passionately, without hesitation – something I haven’t been doing much of lately.

A lot of people have preconceived thoughts in their head about what it means to work for the federal government. A lot of people also have preconceived thoughts in their head about what I should be doing with my architecture degree.

Please stop judging me. Please let me be. I think I will figure this out on my own.

I hate that I feel afraid to talk about my job, because of other people’s judgment. I’m sorry I’m not being more specific –ย I think that would be inappropriate. Let me just say, I thank you all for the support you’ve given me.

Dangit, I’m ENVIOUS of the fact you work for the government! Job security, and federal holidays! ๐Ÿ™‚
It is fantastic that you are passionate about your job. That is what is most important. I bet all the people who give you a hard time are just projecting their frustrations about what they don’t like in their jobs.

    You’ll totally figure it out!

I’m sorry if anyone is making you feel bad. That’s not nice. ๐Ÿ™

diane – Thank you for being so nice Diane. You’ve been supportive from the beginning, and I really appreciate it. I hope it is only other people’s insecurities. Because, really, why the f*ck do they care?

sizzle – It’s not. But hey, some people generally aren’t nice ๐Ÿ˜‰

You can do whatever you want as long as I can still retire in 2 years, and you can support me as a stay-at-home husband.

  5. I completely agree with DIane. I wouldn’t mind receiving some of the nice gov’t perks and federal holidays! Plus the fact that you are loving what you do is amazing! Maybe all the nay sayers are jealous. Plus if you really love work, well, Steven can retire and take care of Data full time! : )

I work for the federal government too and all you need to say to anyone who questions it – SECURITY! And, like Diane said, holidays! I’m surprised people have such strong opinions about YOUR job and actually vocalize them. As long as all my friends/colleagues are employed, happily or not, and healthy that’s all that matters to me.

  7. ok, i agree with what everyone has said too!!! i think the job security and the perks are hella awesome!!!! plus, you love what you do and honestly how many people can say that?!?! i agree that the “haters” are probably just jealous that they don’t love their jobs AND that they don’t have great perks like you do!!! don’t let them bring you down!!!! you don’t deserve it!!!! (just keep on working your little fingers into nubs so that Steven can retire and kitteh-sit all day!!! but, i personally think if he’s going to do that then another kitteh is in order!!!) ๐Ÿ™‚
    =^..^=

You’re going to make your own decisions anyway, so there’s no sense in letting anyone’s opinion bother you. Take it under advisement and do what you want.

  9. Nat says:

Funny eh? I told my mom about a new job I’m starting at the end of the month. Instead of being all over it, she basically spend a lot of time trying to talk me out of it.

    Frustrating as all hell though.

Steven – Of course! I know what our priorities are ๐Ÿ˜‰

Gina (Mannyed) – I’ve got to keep working towards a promotion, because Data DOES need a full-time stay at home daddie ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks for being you ๐Ÿ™‚ And being supportive ๐Ÿ™‚

Jenn – Believe me, I was suprised too. Really surprised. It made me wonder if people wanted the best for me, or not. I am like you, especially now, we should focus on even being employed.

CourtneyInControl – Good point. If Steven’s going to retire, we should probably have at least… 3 cats? Or 4? What do you think? I am trying not to let people annoy me. It helps that you guys are all so nice ๐Ÿ™‚

ajooja – It took me a long time to figure that one out – to do what I want. But now I see that may be the best way to go, at least when making career related decisions.

Nat – Oh man. That is what I hate. People saying, “You’re going to dislike this job because of THIS or THAT.” WTF? You know, then when you do take the job, and have that rare bad day, you can’t say anything to them, because they’re all “Told you so!” You know what’s best for you, Nat. ๐Ÿ™‚
