Our first fencing class

“When you swim, you’re gonna get water up your nose. When you ski, you’re gonna fall down. When you fence, you’re gonna get stabbed.”

That’s one of the first things our fencing instructor told us tonight. He was being humorous, explaining the different pieces of clothing you wear to protect your body (I remembered the chest protection, Kyra!).

Are you intimidated? Or at least laughing?

The first night of class was a lot of fun. I wasn’t really looking forward to it, since I have a nasty cold, but moving about seemed to lift my spirits.

We covered equipment, basic footwork and a few positions (if that’s what they’re called?). I can tell this is going to be another sport that adds definition to my already rock hard quads. There is a lot of lunging, and footwork that involves balancing your body weight on slightly bent knees (so much for focusing on different muscle groups on my “cross-training” night).

I am looking forward to when I actually get to fence with Steven. We are already prancing around the house with wooden spoons, practicing our moves (okay, I had a wooden spoon – he was holding Data). I have a feeling this is going to take a lot of practice, since I am a naturally uncoordinated, and this requires a lot of… coordination! But I think it will be a fun diversion from our normal day.

I just think this is so cool. πŸ™‚

  2. Kyra says:

Don’t ever forget that chest protection. It’s vital, I tell you! πŸ˜‰

  3. tori says:

That sounds like a lot of fun! Where are you taking classes?

  4. Christina says:

Hahahahaha I laughed out loud about the wooden spoon/Data part! I am in class so that is not a good thing! πŸ˜›

  5. hmm…in Data’s best interest he better come live with me during your fencing lessons. You can keep the wooden spoons.

Seriously, this sounds like so much fun and a great way to get exercise. I know another blogger that I’ve been reading for years that just started her lessons also. I told her about you. She’s at, http://ventl8r.blogspot.com/

  6. Jess says:

Fencing is awesome! I have a coworker who used to do it full-time and traveled all over the world for competitions.

sizzle – Hee hee. Thanks πŸ™‚

Kyra – There are 6 women and only 5 chest guards! I made sure to get one. I hope the instructor brings more!

tori – The classes are at the College of Lake County in Grayslake. The cost is less than $100 a person for the whole semester! We got a catalog from CLC in the beginning of December and they have a bunch of fun classes that you can take.

Christina – Oops! I hope I didn’t get you in trouble! Were you laughing because you could actually picture us doing that? I hid by the pantry while Steven was in the powder room, then I jumped out at him with the spoon when he came out. That is when he picked up Data to use as a weapon.

Gina (Mannyed) – Don’t turn me in to Animal Protection Services! I’ll get another spoon! πŸ˜› It is a lot of fun. I don’t even feel like it’s exercise. Thanks for linking to the other blog. I will go check it out!

Jess – Some of the people demostrating for the class were into competitions. I can see how fencing would become very addictive. It gets you all worked up!

  9. suze says:

Wow, that sounds like so much fun.

And your instructor is right, at least about swimming and skiing… Hope you don’t get stabbed too bad πŸ˜‰

  10. Alice says:

all my highschool friends fenced, and all loved it! they kept trying to get me to join the team, but i have something against being attacked by swords on purpose πŸ˜‰

  11. kilax says:

suze – It is so fun! And it is fun to take a class with Steven! Have you and Mike ever taken a class together? I’ll admit, Steven and I are a bit competitive with another… so I am going to have to hope I don’t get stabbed too bad πŸ˜‰

Alice – I was kind of scared too. Until I got all the gear on. Then I was ready for some action! It’s never too late to try!

  12. E says:

Reminds me of when Diane and I were taking Aikido classes together! Except, unlike with her, I never had to worry about being joint-locked and dragged-around the house by a kitty… ;-P

  13. claire says:

Very cool. I watched a bunch of fencing during the Olympics… so fast!

I haven’t done fencing, but stage fighting with swords was definitely fun. Keep up apprised.

  17. teeni says:

Wow. Poor Data. LOL. I think it is awesome that you and your hubby try new things to stay active and keep things interesting. You will always have wonderful memories of these things you did together. πŸ™‚ And heck you may as well have FUN being healthy if you can!

  18. kilax says:

E – I thought about you two during class! You never know when cats can be used as weapons – have you seen Laser Cats (the SNL skit?) – ha ha, watch out!

claire – Stage fighting with swords?! SCARY!!! πŸ˜‰ Even during the class presentation, they went so fast I couldn’t tell what was going on!

CourtneyInControl – It’s hard not to be competitive, isn’t it?!

marissa – It sounds like something YOU’D be up for! πŸ™‚

Bethany – I am happy I made someone laugh! I look pretty goofy!

teeni – I hope it does become a good memory, and encourage us to try new things. It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut!
