We’re like hostages on this train!

By , December 30, 2008 7:09 pm

My wish didn’t come true.

My Metra wish, that is.

All I could think about at the end of the day was getting home. I had a wonderful Christmas, but I am exhausted. I feel dead tired – more tired than I’ve felt in a long time. This month is just wearing me out, and our travels aren’t over yet – we’re flying to Kansas City on Thursday. It’s fun to spend this time of year with family (or any time), but the back to back traveling just kills me.

The holidays just aren’t the same as they used to be.

Anyway. The train I was taking out of Chicago tonight went about 500 feet then stopped for an hour. We saw cop cars pull up and a stretcher go by. No announcements were ever made. People on the train started to complain to one another. One man said “We’re like hostages on this train!”

Why tonight, on a night when I just want to get home? I tried to relax and make the most of my time sitting there… but really, I’m stuck on a train. There’s not much “making the most of my time.”

Bleh. When will I feel energized again?

Soon, please, soon!

(Even though this is written in the past tense, I am still on this gd train as I post this!)

I hope you get home soon.

Also, weirdly mine did come true. Don’t think I actually got around to commenting but the flash thought that crossed my mind was that I wanted my bro and SiL to quit smoking. When they arrived, they were both taking meds to do just that. Go figure.

DeAnne – We had another delay so I am still on the train. GAH!!!

    claire – I am happy someone’s came true! That’s a good one!

Sounds like the train crew could’ve been more communicative! But maybe they weren’t out of a concern for medical privacy…

At least when my Metra train was stuck, we were updated every 10-15 minutes or so for nearly an hour as to the status of the “big, heavy” switching mechanisms which had apparently lost electrical power and needed manual movement. :-/

That beats the usual excuse of “late arrival of equipment”, or CTA’s “we’ll be moving shortly” which too-often then turns into 20 minutes or more! (And at least on Metra, if you *really* can’t stand being held hostage, you could force the doors open and flee to freedom (an idea I toyed-with…), albeit, with the conductors yelling/scolding you for violating well-meaning but too-inflexible safety policies and threatening punishments, etc.. Try to flee a CTA train this way and you probably will fall to your paved doom!)

Aww dearie, … I’m so sorry- I feel your pain ๐Ÿ™

I know you are probably at home now sending up the ZZzzzz’s – tomorrow will be a better day and the New Year is just right around the corner – I’m looking forward to it too- it’s a stressful time of year – always seems there is so much to do and so little time!
    xoxoxo

  5. mom says:

Sorry you got stuck on the train. Hope you were warm while you waited. To bad it’s not the Polar Express, they serve hot coco. (sorry to many Christmas movies)love Mom

  6. Robin says:

    uhhh……Happy New Year?

  7. diane says:

Hee hee, your Mom’s comment made me giggle.
You know what is really sad? With all the improvements they’ve made recently, the CTA is actually becoming much more reliable than Metra. That is just sad. Really, Metra should be embarrassed. I think I’ll write a letter!
I’m sorry your train sucks so badly. I’ve never had a really horrible experience (knock wood) with my Metra line (except for being 20 minutes late outside of rush hour now and then). I think yours is cursed!!

  8. tori says:

Well, at least you weren’t on that stretcher, right?

Your mom’s comment made me laugh. Too funny!

And I remember the train nightmares from when my husband took the train. He’d always be slightly cranky for a few minutes after he got home because of it. I hope you got home just fine!

  9. Ugh, Kim! Man, I know your frustrations with being delayed. A train delay can totally ruin a decent day in an instant. When I would eventually get home after being delayed I would still be in furious mode!

I hope you get to chillax (chill/relax) during the next few days. Happy New Year! Perhaps the Metra will get their butts moving on the right track (haha) in 09.

  10. kilax says:

E – I thought about forcing the doors open! But where would I go? To diane’s house? Ha ha ha! I hate that they sometimes don’t tell us anything, or that when they do… it is totally worthless. No one likes to sit there “in the dark,” not knowing.

jQ – Today is already a better day! Especially since I know Steven is picking me up at the halfway point tonight. My nights are always better when I get to ride home with him!

mom – LOL! YOU TOTALLY CRACK ME UP!!! ๐Ÿ˜› I haven’t had ANY hot coco this year!

Robin – Happy New Year! ๐Ÿ™‚ Sorry to scare you away ๐Ÿ˜‰

diane – That’s good to hear – at least CTA is getting better! I don’t know why I am cursed. Bad karma? ๐Ÿ™

tori – You’re right. I hope no one was hurt! I sat in the car for a bit when I got home to cool down. ๐Ÿ˜‰ We had another 30 min. delay after that though.

Gina (Mannyed) – I love your pun! Ha! You always know how to make me laugh. I am finally cooled down after yesterday, and thinking I should write a more cheerful post!

  11. Alice says:

oh man, i’m getting anxious and angry just THINKING about being stuck on a train for that long, and especially w/o any communication. it makes me FURIOUS in those situations.. probably because i’m so powerless to freaking do anything about it except get madder and madder… eesh. i hope you’re home now ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. SJ says:

I can’t even imagine living like this. I’m so spoiled by living two blocks from where I work. I feel bad for you.

On a brighter note, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

  13. kilax says:

Alice – Ironically, I am on the train again, but hoping for better luck this time ๐Ÿ˜‰ I hate that feeling of not being able to do anything. I think that makes me more upset than the fact that I am stuck!

SJ – Ooo, I would love to be THAT close! ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy New Year!!!

  14. teeni says:

I can’t believe you haven’t had hot cocoa yet this year. Well, you should definitely remedy that because then everything else will just fall into place, don’t you know? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  15. kilax says:

teeni – You’re right! I should go buy some… or even try to make it at home! I have cocoa and milk…
