Someone who actually likes their cubicle
I have a cubicle at my new office. It has a u-shaped work surface, tackable privacy panels, a lockable wardrobe, 2 pedestals, and filing cabinet.
I love it.
At my old office, we had an open work area – just long rows of desks. No dividers. No privacy. I didn’t mind it, but having a cubicle is a pretty big change for me, so I am using that as justification to write about how much I like it now.
I am all about personalization. I don’t want to go overboard, but I want to have a bit of personality in my workstation. At my old office, I was the only person who had photos on my desk (a digital photo frame). It wasn’t prohibited – I just think the open desks didn’t particularly lend themselves to that sort of… clutter.
Now, I have my digital photo frame out, a few photos on magnets, and some cute desk organizers. That’s it. It’s fun and simple and makes my desk feel more personal. And my workstation is big enough that I have space for these things.
I enjoy seeing what other people have in their cubicles – sports paraphernalia, family photos, architectural photos, fun magnets, holiday decorations, and so on. It’s a good way to start a conversation, and I think it livens up the space a bit.
Do you have anything personal on your desk at work? Or do you think it just lends itself to being clutter and a distraction?
I have some pictures, tins (which hold my munchies stash) a few stuffed animals and state fair spin art. Otherwise, it’s stuff I use in my job, like scissors and pens and note papers.
I love my cube. I asked for my cube, in fact–we used to have an open workroom, and people just were obnoxious and noisy and distracting.
I’ve got a little shrine one corner of mine with personal photos and memorabilia (thank you notes, posters, prayers, buttons, etc.). I should bring the digitial frame in, but I don’t think I have anywhere to plug it in. Stupid room layout–plugs in really random locations and not nearly enough of them…ANYWAY!
We cube-lovers need to start a Facebook group! π
I like havinga cubicle too. Although an office would be really nice! I’m about personalization too. You spend 40 + hours a week there. No reason not to let it reflect you. I have family and friend pictures, a faux plant and a Hook ‘Em Horns banner, plus some cards and cartoons to make me laugh.
I would prefer an office but I make do with my cubicle. At least I get a window! And yes, I totally decorate it- put colorful fabric over my guest chair, hang photos and art, put out little nicknacks, etc.
I also have a sign at my entrance that says, “Appreciate me. Avoid the rush.” because I enjoy irony.
My cube is kind of all over the place. I have photos of my dog, but not my husband. I have a birth announcement from a dear friend (it’s now two years old). A water color of my alma mater. Photos of downtown Chicago when the put lettering on the buildings in celebration of the White Sox, Bears and 2016 Olympics. I have little stuffed animals and balls – all marketing ploys of other companies. And I have marketing materials I’ve developed over the years (for better or worse). There are many days I wish I had an office …
I have an italy calendar; a postcard form you; pictures {Manny pic; my wedding pic; vaca pics} on shelves: ticketstubs: a yankee hat; a piggy bank that I call my 410k – lots of stuff.
When people don’t have anything on their desks it makes me suspicious lol. Might as well make your area a lil more homey.
Pictures of me and my family, penguin items (various toys and penguin characters), a daily calendar, two coffee mugs and a place to put my sunglasses.
i don’t have a cube just a desk out in the “open” waiting area…. but it is covered with all kinds of stuff… stuffed animals- small ones (a kitty & hippo), a furry kitty in a basket, some “stone” animals (panda, kitty, & hippo), a page-a-day kitty calendar, and i have a- what do you call it- the board with fabric and ribbon on it that holds pictures and stuff like that- one of those with pics of the kitties, dc and i, and friends on it… i have the pic that you sent me of you and Steven from your wedding on it!!!! (along with things i need to work)…
i’m glad that you like your cube!!! and i think that you do spend so much time at work you might as well make it more personal and “homey”… (sometimes) when i’m having a bad day looking at my pics really cheers me up!!!
=^..^=
HAHA! This was a cute post. I think offices are much more productive than cubicles – there is way too much distraction with cubicles, such as sounds and smells and constant interruptions because people are always walking by. But on the other hand, you can have a lot of fun with cubicles too. I used to store all my toys from the kids’ meals I’d get when I went out to eat at fast food places on my cubicle shelves. My colleagues would sometimes torture them on me and one time I found some of my toys suspended in midair because someone used fishing wire to make them look like they were flying. π
Your cube sounds similar to mine, and I love mine too. I have a couple of vases and framed photos, and then some snapshots pinned on one of my tackboards. People are always commenting on how cheery all the photos are. They’re kind of behind me, though, so they aren’t distracting.
I don’t think I could handle an open air environment. I’ve always had offices or cubicles. I need some separation from officemates even if it’s minimal. I don’t like the idea of looking up and seeing someone else.
I have all kinds of personal swag all over my desk.
I have the Steelers flag I wore as a cape when we won the Super Bowl hanging behind me. I’ve hung it in every office space I’ve occupied since then!
I know what you mean by having your own desk with walls up so you can sit an do nothing for about 5 min an NO one knows. … I have a cubicle at work. I have the pic of christina you and me up from about 2 years ago, sis basketball picture, my two lil ones and then this really cool add out of a magazine. don’t have to much on my desk other then a fan so when i get hot π and then a radio so I can listen to my music in private. O yeah you can’t foget your fav pic of your self :).. .. I totally understand what your getting at. Can’t wait to see you.. ..
I have tons of stuff on my desk…I will try to take a picture to share π
I love my new cubie, it has a window view on the 26th floor. It is big, spacey, and being the only girl….very girly!!!!
My mom got me a digital picture frame yesterday for my birthday so now I have that on here too π
i have a bunch of personal stuff, but it’s still waaaaay less than a lot of people here:
4 framed photos of friends (how alliterative!!)
a tiny ny giants helmet
a little nicaragua knick-knack a friend brought me
an asterix (french comic) day by day calendar
some origami boxes i made to hold paperclips etc
a litle dancing robot dude
a painted terracotta turtle from peru, also from a friend
a calendar i made online from my flickr photos
AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!!! i just clicked on the link for your desk organizer and i officially love you.
Odie – I just LOVE looking at photos. I don’t know why! Human curiosity? And I think it can say a bit about what is important to people. I wish I could see yours!
Cat. – Shrine. Ha! That is a good word for it! Did you start our FB group yet? Just kidding, Ha ha!
Cheryl – It just feels to sterile to me if it doesn’t have a bit of personality! Maybe a sterile desk reflects a sterile personality… or just a really serious person. Some people don’t want their coworkers to know ANYTHING about them.
sizzle – I think it is important for cubicles to have access to natural light (I am thinking that is what you mean by window, not a cubicle with a window). Where I work, all of the offices are interior, so all the cubicles have light. Horrah!
Nilsa – Do you wish you had an office for the privacy or space? Are you going to take in a wedding photo?! π
Gina (Mannyed) – It also makes me suspicious… like when a desk is TOO clean. Are they doing any work? Hee hee. Which postcard do you have up? Aww…
martymankins – I didn’t know you were into penguins! That’s cool π
CourtneyInControl – I love those furry little kitties in the basket. Aww. I am happy you are able to personalize your desk even though it is open!
teeni – That is funny – I am thinking that the cubicle is A LOT less distracting than my last office! I wonder if I can use that fishing wire trick on anyone around here… hmm… better wait until I get to know them better! π
Jess – Surprisingly, my photo frame is not that distracting either! We are just such hard workers π
kapgar – I didn’t mind seeing everyone before, but I really like it now! π
Marginal Designs – Cool! You can take it from office to office. Fun!
Courtney Ilax – I have the wedding photo of us up! I can’t wait to see you either!
Felicia – Happy late birthday! I hope to see a pic! π
Alice – It sounds like you have been to a few “over the top” desks?! π Ha! I am happy you like the Butt Station! It makes me laugh!
My work is not very office-y, but in case I ever get a desk job, I have a miniature pink flamingo set to make myself amused.
Jay – That would certainly amuse me! Someone in our office has pink flamingo lights set up for the holidays! ha!
I put up some holiday festivness, but that would be on my tiny divider located 6″ to the edge of my big open desk. I always liked having a cubical. I did find a really cool picture frame and have my eye on the perfect tea cut (with infuser) but the most personal I ever get is changing up the national geographic wallpaper on my screen, and I’ve had the blue sea organism for a while so it’s time to find something new and maybe even inspiring of warmth π
DeAnne – I am happy to hear you have some decorations!
