Friday Question #43

Do you plan on handing out treats to trick-or-treaters for Halloween this year? What kind of treats will you hand out?

Our town is kind of goofy. It seems they always have the trick-or-treating on the Sunday before Halloween, which means it will be this Sunday, October 26th. Seems kind of early.

We handed out candy last year, and it was such a bust. It was almost like we had to do the work to get the trick-or-treaters to come to us. I was disappointed. It was my first year handing out treats in “my own” home.

I haven’t asked Steven if he wants to hand out treats this year, and I am guessing he will say no. But, if we do decide, for some reason, I would like to hand out those little packs of animal crackers. They’re only 60 calories each, and would make a good “snack” for me if we had leftovers!

  1. in the past i never handed out candy before, the ex wasn’t too fond of having people stop by…. anyways, seeing as how i’m living in an apartment now i’m not sure what the “rules” are… i don’t think i’ll be handing out candy this year although i may pick up a few treats in case friends want to stop by with their kids, like, if they call first… (that sounds horrible!!)
hopefully if you do hand out treats the turnout will be better than last years!!! animal crackers sound good now!!!
    =^..^=

  2. diane says:

I like the idea of the animal crackers!
Living in the city in a big apartment building pretty much means no trick-or-treaters. Boo. 🙁

  3. Hilly says:

I’m not going to be here for Halloween so there is probably no way in hell those kids are getting candy. Haha, Shawn does NOT like to go up and down two flights of stairs just for that. If I were here, I’d put a bowl outside rather than answering the door. I live in a gated community where you can actually do that sort of thing and trust there will still be enough candy for all. Also, I get the good stuff….chocolate or the fun stuff. I don’t want to be “that house”. 😉

  4. Jenn says:

I LOVE handing out candy to kids, but sadly we live in a neighborhood with tons of retired people so there are no kids around. We tried the first year and got a few kids, but not enough to make the effort any other year.

  5. Catherine says:

Animal Crackers is just the best idea I’ve heard in forever! Gets my vote.

  6. sizzle says:

I live in an apartment with one kid in the entire building so, no. Sadly! I love doing that and can’t wait until I have a proper house to decorate and hand out the good candy to kids. Like mini snickers or m&ms or kit kats.

On second thought, I should get the candy I don’t like so I won’t eat it!

  7. Felicia says:

Sadly we won’t, we just don’t get them and I don’t need the candy in the house…as we live across the street from a church that has a Fall Festival for the kids and down the street is a water park that will be doing the same thing. I think in this day and age, not alot of parents let their kiddos out to go trick or treating. That was awesome when I was a kid and I am sad that in today’s environment it is just not safe for them anymore 🙁

  8. martymankins says:

We normally go over to my step daughter’s house while my wife and her daughter take her granddaughter around during the last part of daylight to go trick or treat.

I normally will stay behind and hand out candy. Mostly M&Ms fun size and Snickers fun size that gets handed out.

  9. claire says:

The only contenders on my street are one neighbor’s daughters, but last year even they didn’t show, so probably no. I’d rather head into town to watch the little Halloween parade instead of being uselessly chained home for a couple hours.

Since there’s always leftovers, I get what I like: little snickers, twix, kitkats… two or three 8-packs is more than enough.

  10. ajooja says:

I always get stuck handing out candy and I hate it. My wife always takes our kids around to see local family members.

This year, my son is too old but my grandson will be going out for the first time.

So, I have no idea what we’ll do.

Chances are, I’ll get stuck at home while everyone else goes out.

As for candy, I usually end up getting about six big bags of candy and giving out about four. I give big handfuls.

I’d like to give out one, full-size candy bar to each kid but I can never find them at grocery stores or Wal-Mart this time of year. I’m not buying them at convenience stores, so I’ll probably end up getting big bags of the little candy bars again.

    I hate Halloween.

  11. teeni says:

Animal crackers are yummy and they make a better treat than candy. I mean, they will get tons of candy. When I was a kid, I actually would have rather have had some cookies or something to break it up a bit. LOL.

  12. Alice says:

i won’t be around for halloween! i’ll be in paris, probably on my way to amsterdam.. 😉 last year we had ZERO kids come by though. lame.

  13. tori says:

You know what else about your town doing it early? The kids from your town then come to my town on actual Halloween for extra treats. It doesn’t bother me so much, but you should hear some of my neighbors rant about that!

I love your idea of giving out the healthier treats. I have one neighbor who is a hygenist and gives out toothbrushes. My kids are odd and find that to be the best thing ever. Most of the kids sort of avoid that house while my kids rush over there. We are handing out candy though….unless I eat it all first!

  14. Kyra says:

We don’t get trick or treaters out here. We travel to town, and there are millions of kids all over the place. I plan on taking photos again this year.

  15. kilax says:

CourtneyInControl – Your friends with kids stop over after they trick-or-treat? Or just stop over in general? The kids would probably appreciate the candy 😉 But… can you resist it in the apartment? 😛

diane – The one time I lived alone, I was in an apartment, and bummed I couldn’t hand out treats. I wonder what all the kids do who live in apartments?

Hilly – We used to go trick-or-treating in my grandma’s neighborhood, and there were a few houses that just left a bowl out. We loved it! It was fun to pick out what we thought the “best treat” was from their mix!

Jenn – Maybe in the new neighborhood? Although, the houses seem pretty far apart.

Catherine – I am going to Target tomorrow to see if they still have them!

sizzle – That was our problem last year – we got all the stuff we liked and ate it ALL DAY LONG. BAD BAD BAD. But oh so fun fun fun!

Felicia – I didn’t realize parents aren’t letting their kids out anymore. What a bummer.

martymankins – Do you prefer to be the hander-outer? I always felt bad when my mom stayed back to hand out the treats!

claire – Aww! A parade sounds cute! When I was in Italy in February, in some town in Sicily, all the kids were wearing costumes and walking in the town square. I have no idea what it was for, but I thought it was charming.

ajooja – Would you have more fun if you went out to trick-or-treat? At least the trick-or-treaters coming to your house are enjoying that entire handful of candy! Yum!

teeni – That is kind of what I was thinking. Some variety. Hey, I wonder if anyone hands out those 100 calorie packs. Ha! That would be funny. Those things are expensive though.

Alice – Hmm, do they do Halloween there? I would trade up any holiday for travel!

tori – That does not surprise me that the parents take the kids to both towns. When does your town do it? I hope the kids don’t think the animal crackers are lame. I hope they are cool, like your kids 😉

Kyra – It would be weird if someone showed up at your doorstep for treats! Maybe a little creepy!

  16. de says:

okay, could they make Halloween any more lame? the Sunday before

I guess it really doesn’t matter, I mean what are we celebrating or are we just having a universal dress up day; but really. I thought that my communities restrictive hours was one thing but at least it is that day that it is.

  17. kilax says:

de – Well, this is obviously a consumer holiday, but it is still fun. 😛

  18. Bethany says:

I will actually be babysitting again on Halloween night– but that’s okay, because the little babe and I will have a good time! 🙂

  19. kilax says:

Bethany – A baby could be a lot more fun than handing out candy 😉

  20. so did you hand out candy?? i thought about that last night…
    =^..^=

  21. kilax says:

CourtneyInControl – We did! We bought the animal crackers, and gave each kid two bags. We only had 21 kids! It was windy beyond belief all day 🙁

  22. kapgar says:

We’ll be handing out the normal small treats like we always do. But we’ll be buying a few big candy bars for the high schoolers that seem to think we always have the “best candy.” So, yeah, we’ll splurge for them. 😉

  23. kilax says:

kapgar – You’re so nice 🙂 A few of the kids that came to our house had huge snickers in their bags and I was surprised!
