I might be a bit biased…

Pros of exercising INDOORS, on the treadmill:

  • Flat, even terrain
  • No wind! No resistance!
  • Flat screen tv to watch
  • Proximity to shower/bathroom
  • Ample light
  • No one can see you huffing and puffing
  • No funny outdoor smells
  • NO BUGS IN YOUR BRA

While Steven and I were walking home after running in the park last night, the area under my right breast really started to itch. Sports bras are a bit uncomfortable, so I figured that was all it was, and kept itching at it. I hurried up to the shower to peal it off and found…

… a little black bug with tiny legs.

GROSS! GROSS! GROSS! GROSS! GROSS!

Gross.

You can probably guess that I took a LONG shower and scrubbed extra hard.

In all honesty, I prefer running outside over running on an indoor track, and I prefer running on an indoor track over running on the treadmill. But last night we had to run in the dark. And it’s August! I can’t get home any earlier, so I guess I will be using the treadmill a lot more (than I prefer) during the colder/darker season. I’m lucky we have one at home.

  1. its getting darker already ahhh!

props to you for jumpstarting your running routine!

Bugs in sports bras? How about icicles forming on your face from running outside when it’s a tad bit too cold? Yeah, that happened to me years ago. Running inside when the elements are in extremes is a good idea. No matter what time of year!

  3. sizzle says:

I was hoping you’d explain the bugs in the bra thing- eww! I should really exercise.

  4. Jenn says:

I hate running outdoors. The treadmill is so much easier and I never realized until one day I ran 2.5 miles on the treadmill and the next could barely do 1/2 mile around a school track.

Any kind of running is good but I agree with you.

My favorite place to run is at the high school track. My wife would prefer to go to the local state park, where the bike/running trail is 11 miles long with lots of hills. There are three different parking lots and several different sections to take — if you don’t want to do 11 miles — but I’d still rather go to the track where I was all-state. There are no hills and my mind goes back to a time when I was young and in great shape. Running in the park just makes me tired. ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s a catchy phrase “Black Bugs In Bras” Or the next cool new band name.

Seriously, the idea of running outdoors when it’s nice is tempting, but I think I would prefer the indoor treadmill.

For outdoor running, we have a park here called Liberty Park. About 3 years ago, the city poured a buttload of money into it and made a nice track that circles the entire park (the park covers 4 city blocks north and south and two city blocks east and west). If it wasn’t so far from my house, I would prefer it to running outdoors.

We also have a high school across the street, but with school season starting next week, it’s kind of off limits now. Do you have any similar parks or schools nearby to your home?

haaaa. and EEEEWWWWW. ick ick ick.

i prefer running on treadmills because i SUCK at running, and it’s like 40x easier to run on nice, flat, gentle treadmills ๐Ÿ™‚

I know I definitely prefer the majestic outdoors on some days, but other days I just want the benefits of the indoor, private, climate controlled, bug-free treadmill.

You should be thankful for one thing: the bug was not a tick.
    I speak from experience.

I wish I could run on treadmills. I think I have runners ADD or something, I just get bored. I looooove running at night. I get all freaked out that theres a boogeyman behind me and it makes me go faster. Novel idea until there really is one someday.

Better in your bra than your mouth? Just a thought… (man, without knowing I was talking about bugs, that statement alone is kinda weird.)

    eeeeeeeewwwwwwwwww! Gross…..

Before I had kids, I ran outside and thought treadmills were horrible. Then I had kids and it was either run while they were sleeping or not at all since my husband’s schedule is unpredictable. Now, I actually prefer the treadmill! I tried to run outside the other weekend with my daughter and hated it! We have way too many neighbors who are outside at all hours watching us. I know they aren’t actually watching us, but it sure feels like it. Probably when the kids are old enough, I will go back to running outside at 5 in the morning and then it won’t matter, but for now I love my treadmill!

  12. tori says:

Also, gross about the bug! I hate when you think there is a bug, but then think you are imagining it and then there really is one that you discover a bit later and then know it had been there that whole time. That happened to me this morning!

Gina (Mannyed) – And staying darker later in the morning. It’s really making me feel sad. ๐Ÿ™

Nilsa – Whoa! You must be serious! I am already planning on sticking to the indoors when it gets that cold ๐Ÿ˜‰

sizzle – This probably didn’t encourage you to exercise outdoors though ๐Ÿ˜›

Jenn – I am in the same boat – can run a long time on the treadmill, but not outside. I think I’d like to run outside as often as possible, and on the treadmill when I am not feeling well (my bum hip).

ajooja – Park running is A LOT different than track! Is it more of a trail? Those are tough. But it’s probably good to do both!

martymankins – Should that be my next Rock Band name?!?! I do like it. ๐Ÿ™‚ We have schools close, but I never thought about using them. The Chicago area als has a pretty extensive Forest Preserve system WITH trails. I was actually thinking how much I would love to run in the park – it would just be a REALLY sweaty ride home! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Alice – Yes. Yes. Yes it is! I am trying ti fight the urge to just use the treadmill… but I already feel cold weather creeping in! It’s getting a little cooler every day ๐Ÿ™

Megan – Hopefully not a tick in your BRA?!?!?

em – I think running may be the easiest sport to get bored in! Maybe I will have to try the boogeyman idea! And YES, I am definitely happy it was NOT in my mouth. EW. YUCK YUCK YUCK.

    Robin – Exactly!

tori – Isn’t it funny how people have a natural inclination to want to watch other people exercise? I think it is something we just can’t turn off about ourselves. I am guilty of it too! I wish that bug would have been imaginary! Where was your bug?

  14. Cheryl says:

Blech! I can’t imagine. I like the gym usually, but I do notice one good thing about taking a walk/run/bike is that you are forced to exercise in that you always have to get home, you can’t just hop off the machine…

  15. kilax says:

Cheryl – So true! Once you get out so far… YOU are your only way home!
