People you don’t even know?!

Isn’t it funny trying to explain blogging and blogger-meetups to a non-blogger?

I got into this conversation with my boss tonight, when I told him I was going to meet Beth and Kevin. (He saw I was looking at Beth’s site, then asked what the heck I was looking at (her pictures from an American Girl Store visit), so I went on to tell him this was her blog, and I was meeting her tonight, and blah blah blah.)

He actually sounded interested, and told me to have a good time when I left.

I’m happy he didn’t ask, “Now, why would you want to meet up with people you don’t even know?” I’ve heard that’s a common non-blogger response.

Why does anyone meet up with people they don’t know? To try to create new friendships? That is always my hope. I think it probably worked tonight. We had a great time!

everyone I speak to thinks it’s a pretty neat thing meeting up w/bloggers.. including my mom.

so I think I got lucky in that regard

  2. Kyra says:

Heck, I think we should organize a fun chicago meet up when I pop out there so I can actually say I attended one of those things ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Nilsa says:

Soooo bummed I missed it, but so glad you had a great time. And I’m with you on the why we meet new people / other bloggers stance. However, my fiance is still trying to digest this whole online, non-dating world. It confuses the crap out of him.

  4. Felicia says:

Well yeah, I hope to meet you when I am Chicago!! I have met alot of friends through online…..my two best girlfriends and I all met through match when they had the friends site (gosh that was forever ago)!!! I do meetups from meetup.com all the time, it is just another way to socialize I believe ๐Ÿ™‚

I love meeting up with my blog friends…cool writers are often cool people ๐Ÿ™‚

    Cxx

Meeting people you met on the internet? How crazy is that!

  7. tori says:

I am so incredibly sad I missed it! I know I told you before that my husband doesn’t really get it, but is ok with it at the same time. Sort of like he plays golf, which I don’t really get but he still can do it and I am fine with it.

Dave2’s comment is cracking me up like crazy.

I’m so annoyed when people say stuff like – why would you want to meet people you don’t know- um, isn’t that how it usually goes down? How would we ever make friends? At the grocery store? Besides, we probably know more about one another this way than if we’d met in line at a store or something.

    Glad you had fun!

The problem is that I haven’t met anyone in my town with any desire to have a friendship. It is all about aquaintances with other families at ballfields, etc, but most everyone is too busy to go beyond a surface level. Bloggers take time to write about themselves and be interested in reading others so it is no wonder they make great friends. I told one of my offline friends I was meeting people and she thought I was insane. I am sooooo glad I did it – I’m normally introverted – I look forward to talking to Kim for many years to come, someone I would have never known. So, I would definately say it is about new friendships!

Deutlich – You are lucky ๐Ÿ™‚ My mom says stuff like โ€œDo you think thatโ€™s safe?โ€ ๐Ÿ˜›

    Kyra – I think that’s a GREAT idea! ๐Ÿ™‚

Nilsa – My husband doesn’t blog or read at all, but I tell him all about it, and he still comes along ๐Ÿ™‚ I think your fiance would have fun! I really hope you can make it next time.

Felicia – We will definitely get together! I already have it marked in my outlook calendar! I’ve never heard of meetup.com. That sounds like a cool idea though.

Claire – And I also think that people who are so open about their lives tend to be really interesting!

Dave2 – Surely, YOU’D never do such a thing, right?

tori – Only this is way better than golf. Lol. Just kidding, I wouldn’t know! I hope you can come next time, or to Davecago in August…?

sizzle – EXACTLY what I am thinking? How else would you make friends? If you didn’t do that, you’d only have your family. Ha ha.

beth – That is such a good point – that so many people are worried about creating a certain image for themselves, they are limiting themselves to a certain group of friends at the same time. Well, forget that! ๐Ÿ™‚

My wife and I do almost everything together and I was pretty shocked the other day when she said she probably wouldn’t be going with me to the Dave Louis event. She said, “I won’t have any idea what you guys will be talking about.”

She doesn’t read my blog, so she doesn’t realize everyone there will know all kinds of things about her. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. kilax says:

ajooja – She should definitely go! Well, if she is the personality type that likes that. Steven likes to sit and listen. It’s not that he doesn’t know what we’re talking about, just that he is that type. He chimes in from time to time ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. martymankins says:

Meeting local bloggers would be fun. Especially if you are all connected online on a regular basis.

I like meeting out of town bloggers. Like meeting Dave2 was a cool experience. Hoping to branch out more as time goes by.

  14. kilax says:

martymankins – It’s fun… because you feel like you kind of know the person, but meeting someone in person for the first time is always different than you imagine!
